General talksWelcome to EssexListen to Professor Jules Pretty, our Deputy Vice-Chancellor, explain what an Essex degree means to you and what it means to have Essex Spirit.

Accommodation at EssexMoving away from home is exciting, but we understand it can be daunting. We will outline all the options to enable you to make the best decision. Hear all about our fantastic award-winning accommodation and ask our panel of staff and students anything you want – whether it’s ‘Will I make friends?’, ‘What should I bring?’ or ‘Can I put posters on the wall?’

The benefits of being an Essex memberIf you decide to make Essex your home, what can you expect? This talk will outline the benefits of joining the Essex community in terms of student support, student life, employability, and opportunities like studying abroad.

We’re sure you have a lot of questions and that’s why there will be a panel of staff and students able to answer yours. We want you to live and learn at Essex and we understand that academic study is only part of your journey.

Applying to Essex and financing your studies Financing your studies can be scary but we want to arm you with the facts to ensure you understand all the financial support available to you. We’ll outline the Government’s provision and our own support packages, and provide practical tips on becoming a student.

This talk will also take you through the University admissions system and, importantly, will advise you on writing an excellent application and personal statement.

Getting hereBy carIf you are travelling to us by car, sat nav directions using our postcode can be misleading. We therefore recommend that you follow roadside directional signs to the University. If you are driving from London on the A12, take the exit marked Colchester (A133). If you are driving from Ipswich on the A12, take the exit marked Colchester. From Colchester, take the A133 towards Clacton and turn on to the B1028 towards Wivenhoe. Do not use the Knowledge Gateway entrance on the A133 as this will lead you to the wrong side of campus.

ParkingWe have a multi-storey car park on campus with plenty of spaces so do not worry about parking. There is no need to book a space in advance and you will not be charged on the day.

By trainTrains run between London Liverpool Street and Colchester Station approximately every 10 to 20 minutes. The journey takes around an hour. Train services from Colchester also run to Norwich, Ipswich, Felixstowe and Harwich. Local bus and taxi services connect Colchester Station to our University. Some trains from London Liverpool Street also stop at Wivenhoe Station. If you are travelling from Clacton or Walton, alight at Wivenhoe or Hythe stations and use the local bus or taxi services to travel to our University.

Free shuttle serviceThere will be a minibus at Colchester Station at 8.45am to start collecting visitors. The last minibus returning to the station will leave campus at 4.00pm. Our students will be on hand to help you. If you need to get back to the station, ask a member of staff or a student, and they will be happy to take you to the bus stop.

By taxiA taxi from Colchester Station to the University normally takes about 10 to 15 minutes, outside of rush hour. You can also find a taxi rank on Colchester High Street near the Red Lion Hotel. Two local taxi companies are:

n Minicab Services Ltd: 01206 544444 or 01206 544544n VP Cars: 01206 825001 or 07881422967

Getting here and essential information

Essential informationArrivalWhen you arrive make your way to our Sports Hall, which is the main venue for the Open Day. If you have pre-registered, bring your barcode with you and have this ready as we can check you in quickly. Give your name if you do not have your barcode. If you have not pre-registered, you can register in the Sports Hall on the day. You can check in at any time, even if you arrive in the afternoon, but we suggest you do this as soon as you get on campus to ensure you receive all the information you need to make the most of your day.

AccessibilityIf you require any additional assistance on the day please speak with a staff member or one of our student ambassadors. If you are a visitor with a disability, let a staff member know and they can advise you on accessible routes around campus. If you would prefer a personal tour of campus and/or accommodation, then let the staff member know at the tour departure point in our Sports Hall, and they will ask one of our students to take you.

HelpIf at any time during the day you require assistance, please talk to one of our student ambassadors or speak to a staff member on the check-in desks. Don’t be afraid to ask anything you are unsure of, such as directions or for guide to take you to your destination.

SafetyPlease pay attention to all warnings when on campus and take special care when touring our laboratories. We would kindly ask that you do not touch any equipment unless asked and that you obey staff instructions for your own safety. We welcome children on campus but would ask that you keep them with you at all times, as our staff and students are not able to look after children. We also have trained first-aiders who can assist you.

EmergencyIf the fire alarm sounds continuously, you must immediately leave the building you are in by the nearest available exit. Evacuation stewards and student ambassadors will assist you. Please move away from the exit doors and do not re-enter the building until informed by a member of staff that it is safe to do so. In case of a serious emergency, alert a member of staff or student ambassador. Alternatively, dial 2222 on an internal telephone or 01206 872222 on an outside line and give details of the incident to our security staff. Please do not call the emergency services as the University has agreed arrangements with them.
