Wide-Area Monitoring and Control Requires High-Bandwidth IP ConnectivitySurveillance networks have been widely deployed in cities for various public and private-sector applications. High-quality CCTV monitoring systems are also being installed in numerous cases in open areas.

In addition to the usual monitoring tasks, such networks add capabilities for information content distribution and targeted remote management functions (e.g., traffic signal control, emergency phones, camera directionality and zoom control). These networks are therefore useful for:

• Security reasons by governmental authorities (border and traffic control) and private organizations (perimeter security in industrial areas, pipelines, etc.).

• Infrastructure operations and maintenance activities in locations such as motorways, tunnels and bridges.

In all the above applications, video streams from the monitoring systems need be transmitted over high-speed IP connections to the central sites.

Connectivity Challenges of Monitoring StationsA crucial factor for the successful operation of monitoring services is the availability of reliable, high-capacity broadband connectivity between the cameras / peripheral devices and the operation centers and recording facilities. The modern digital cameras that are used for video surveillance applications utilize various stream types, requiring bitrates from 10 Mbit/s to over 30 Mbit/s per single camera. Monitoring stations / towers have at least 2 cameras and require massive IP bandwidth of many tens of Mbit/s to transmit multiple HD video streams smoothly and latency-free.

Summarizing, the connectivity requirements of monitoring services are the following:

• Excessive IP capacity, from 60 Mbit/s per remote station to many hundreds of Mbit/s for central stations.
