  • Meet Helga

Helga is a PhD student in the Department of Engineering. She is very happy as she has just completed her PhD and has been asked to deposit it in the university open access repository

  • Her supervisor calls to ask her if she wants to deposit her thesis without an embargo. This means that any researcher will be able to read her thesis in full text and it will be available on the internet. Helga is also not sure of a few issues including: 1) who owns her PhD thesis

(her / her university?) 2) What to do about the

charts and data she took from a European Engineering Institute?

    3) If she can still publish a chapter as a journal article if her thesis is online.

  • Know your audience

  • Embedding © in your institution

  • The value of fun and games

  • Copyright need not be a barrier to research

  • The value of open

  • • Students usually own copyright in their thesis, but it may be shared with the university – check IP policy!

    • Open access without an embargo will give your work greater publicity – higher citations in the long term

    • You will need to think about third party content in your thesis as this may need permission.

    • Publishers should not view open access as a threat to traditional publishing – but they might

    • Consider licensing your own work under Creative Commons to allow re-use.
