Florida’s Eden salutes the artists of Melrose Open Air Arts 2011. They exemplify the power of the arts to build stronger communities and communicate a love of Florida’s natural environment. Our Florida’s Eden membership of hundreds of creative individuals and businesses represents the core of our region’s vibrant, creative economy.
We need your support as we craft new models for bringing together the Environment, Education and the Economy to build more prosperous communities that live in harmony with the natural environment.
In 2010 Florida’s Eden launched The Blue Path Campaign to Save Florida’s Springs. It is our privilege to live among the largest constellation of freshwater springs in the world. For centuries artists, writers, scientists and explorers have been inspired by the wonder and beauty of these crystal blue outpourings from deep within the aquifer. Yet, our springs are degrading at an alarming rate due to overpumping, reduced flow, and high nutrient levels.
The Blue Path Campaign is engaging Floridians to find new ways to value and live with our water resources. The Blue Path is the road to creative excellence in business, education and research–the path to prosperity based on innovation in water use, conservation, biotechnology, construction, materials science, agriculture, and so much more.
The good news is that we know what to do, if we act now! Florida’s springs can be restored and protected. Our aquifer can be kept filled with abundant clean water. The technology exists to dramatically reduce the amount of water Floridians need to consume. What is needed is your civic voice and your support as The Blue Path becomes Florida’s future.
The Blue Path Campaign is coordinated by Florida’s Eden, a non-profit 501c3 organization. Donations are tax deductible.

H I S T O R I C M E L R O S EIn 1877, the community of Melrose was platted along the historic Bellamy Road, Florida’s
first federal highway. At the same time, work started on a canal to connect Lake Santa Fe to the railroad at Waldo, and by 1881 it was completed. Soon, steamboats began bringing Northern tourists to the southeast end of Lake Santa Fe on Melrose Bay. Fine Victorian homes ringed the bay along with schools, churches, a hotel, stores, a newspaper and a grist mill.
The winter of 1894-95 brought disastrous freezes across North Florida. Temperatures dropped to zero. The hotel closed, merchants went out of business and Melrose barely survived. Out of tragedy came a benefit. While the rest of Florida boomed, little changed in Melrose.
The visual history of the community remains a functioning part of everyday life. Today, Melrose with its slow pace and abundance of beautiful lakes, is a thriving town whose assets are protected by Historic Melrose, Inc. and supported by the Melrose Business and Community Association. The charm of Old Melrose has drawn many visitors as well as artists, writers and naturalists.
