I recently became a consultant with Opal Orthodontics, a division of Ultradent Products, Inc.

A privately owned dental company with a 30-year history of quality products, patient focus,

and humanitarian efforts, Ultradent was founded by Dr. Dan Fischer, who remains its president

and CEO.

It is a pleasure to work with Dr. Fischer, a great innovator and one of the most recognized figures

in the dental world. Together, we hope to deepen Opal Orthodontics’ commitment to continuing

education, and develop quality, innovative orthodontic products that provide the best possible

patient care.

Esthetic Brackets

- Ceramic Bracket System

Offering esthetics and superior results, Avex Cxi Ceramic Brackets feature a low profile design that enhances patient comfort while minimizing occlusal interference. They are one component of the revolutionary, evidence-based Avex Suite, which incorporates years of research, case studies, and the clinical teachings of Dr. Richard McLaughlin.

Unique surface treatment on the bonding pads provides optimal mechanical retention and ensures safe debonds.

Esthetic white gold slot liners enhance strength and reduce friction.

Generous undercuts on tie wings enable double tying of ligatures and chains.

Purchase points on the tie wings feature a patented shape that is round for comfort and pointed for easy ligation.

Universal color identification markings correspond with Avex Mx Stainless Steel Brackets.

Mesial and distal “pockets” provide greater interbracket distance, reducing wire forces and improving patient comfort.

Buccal Tubes

The Avex Suite features the industry’s first CNC precision-machined buccal tubes. Because Avex buccal tubes are made from high-tensile stainless steel bar stock instead of powdered metal (used in MIM buccal tubes), they are the smallest, strongest, and lowest profile tubes in the industry. Avex buccal tubes offer true torque in base, maximizing torque expression and minimizing occlusal interferences.

Computer-designed bonding pad shapes provide exceptional anatomical fit with molars.

- Buccal Tubes

All buccal tubes feature micro-etched, 80-gauge mesh pads, which provide optimal bond strength. Palladium brazing helps to eliminate corrosion.

Funneled entrances allow easy insertion of the archwire.

The hook’s anatomical bending stop can be bent in the same place numerous times without breaking.

Special “cut outs” on the gingival and occlusal sides of the buccal tube simplify initial positioning on the molars.

A special “cut out” on the face of the buccal tube assists with final positioning.

Color identification dots ensure accurate placement.

Buccal Tubes

Second molar pads are available in regular and small; small sizes are ideal for bonding on the mesial cusps of partially erupted teeth.

Low profile design enhances patient comfort.

BROAD-D ARCH: Universal arch form used in some self ligating systems; helps reduce the “dark corners” effect. The broadest arch form available.

REvERSE CURvE #5 ARCH: Reverse curve of Spee arch featuring a flattened posterior segment. This is ideal for upper arch bite closing, lower anterior teeth intrusion, and leveling the occlusal plane.

REvERSE CURvE #6 ARCH: Reverse curve of Spee arch featuring a more narrow and less accentuated rocking chair. Ideal for leveling and aligning with less monitoring than other reverse curve arch forms.

• Heat activated, multi-force wire• Three distinct force regions in one archwire: –Anterior region: ideal light forces –Bicuspid region: provides medium forces –Posterior region: provides heavier forces required for multi-rooted teeth• One archwire delivering ideal region specific forces for reduced wire changes

ONE WIRE - THREE FORCES

The anterior region of the arch form has the lowest heat-activated force because anterior teeth have the lightest roots.

The force increases through the bicuspid region, maintaining a slightly greater heat-activated force to move larger rooted bicuspids.

The posterior region of the arch form exhibits superelastic nickel titanium forces for moving strong-rooted molars.

State-of-the-art manufacturing process ensures tighter tolerances and exceptional quality control.

Each wire is inspected, so you can be certain our wires will measure up to your expectations.

ETCHARREST® - Acid Barrier/Neutralizer1

When hydrofluoric acid contacts enamel during porcelain bonding procedures, formation of calcium fluoride occurs and bond strengths to enamel drop significantly.2 Therefore, it is vital to treat porcelain and tooth structure separately with appropriate acids. EtchArrest isolates hard and soft tissues when rubber dam placement is not practical. After etching is complete, apply EtchArrest over the top of the Porcelain Etch to immediately neutralize prior to rinsing.

Rated the #1 dental curing light for 2010 by Reality.

VALO’s optimally collimated beam delivers a complete uniform cure directly over the bracket or through indirect bonding trays. The unique, slim curing head accesses the posterior with ease and the custom LEDs produce high intensity light at 395-480 nm capable of polymerizing all light cured dental materials on enamel and non-enamel surfaces. VALO is designed for convenient chair-side storage in a standard dental unit or can be custom mounted using the bracket included in the kit.

5930 - vALO Power Supply1 - Power supply with universal plugs - 6’ cord

5933 - vALO Power Supply1 - Power supply with universal plugs - 16’ cord

The customary two position curing as shown with the top pictures is not required with vALO on “Plasma” setting as the power and collimating of the beam causes the tooth underneath the bracket to illuminate. Hence, one 3 second exposure by the clinician from the top followed later by a second exposure (usually by the assistant) for a total of 6 seconds is all that is required.

vALO’s high-tech circuitry produces three curing modes: Standard, High Power, and Plasma Emulation. vALO is three lights in one.

vALO’s custom LED pack with lights of three wavelengths enables vALO to cure all proprietary photoinitiators and camphorquinone.

Optimally collimated beam ensures that vALO maintains its power density and cures uniformly over a range of surfaces and working distances.

From a single bar of aluminum to the most advanced curing light in

the world—that’s the VALO story.

vALO starts as a single bar of high-grade, aircraft aluminum, which is CNC precision milled at Ultradent’s facility in Utah, USA.

True uni-body construction via machining ensures vALO’s durability and superior heat dissipation, and facilitates the elegant, ergonomic, and streamlined design that enables vALO to access areas other curing lights simply cannot reach.

WHITEN YOUR SMILE - Questions Behind Tooth WhiteningThere are many causes of tooth staining. Certain medicines, tooth trauma, root fillings, and certain foods and beverages can cause tooth discoloration over time. Some discolorations are superficial while others are internal. Both can be effectively treated by a dentist; professional whitening is the best option to safely lighten discolored teeth.

HOW DOES BLEACHING WORk?The whitening process is possible “due to the ability of the carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide to freely pass through enamel and dentin and to permeate to all parts of the tooth.”1 These peroxides break down into oxygen radicals, which migrate between the enamel prisms, breaking down any colored molecules that result in tooth discoloration. The structure of the tooth is not altered; the internal tooth color is simply made lighter.

“Bleaching agents break down into tiny molecules and move in all directions so even if the entire tooth is not covered with bleach, the entire tooth is whitened.”2

Numerous studies have proven the effectiveness of peroxides in whitening teeth. Enamel, dentin, existing fillings, and bonding materials are not affected by the whitening agents, nor are they harmed by the whitening materials.

WILL BLEACHING AFFECT BOND STRENGTH?Even though bleaching agents release a great amount of oxygen into the tooth, existing bonds are not weakened.3

If bleaching before bonding, allow a period of 7-10 days after bleaching. The high concentration of oxygen in the tooth could significantly and adversely affect polymerization of the resins.3

HOW LONG DOES THE BLEACHING LAST?Bleaching results are very stable, but depending on the patient’s nutrition and lifestyle habits, the procedure may need to be redone periodically. Due to the safety of the bleaching agents, this should not concern the dentist or patient.

WILL BLEACHING CAUSE TOOTH SENSITIvITY?Tooth sensitivity is a relatively common side effect of bleaching. If sensitivity occurs, it is transient and disappears after the completion of bleaching. However, most Opalescence products include PF (potassium nitrate and fluoride) desensitizing agents for additional comfort. Research has shown that “just as hydrogen peroxide penetrates through the enamel and dentin and to the pulp, so does potassium nitrate. Fluoride acts primarily as a tubular blocker, plugging the holes and slowing down the fluid flow that causes the sensitivity. Potassium nitrate acts more like an analgesic or anesthetic by keeping the nerve from repolarizing after it has depolarized in the pain cycle.”4

WILL BLEACHING WEAkEN THE TOOTH’S ENAMEL?Findings on the Opalescence PF product line presented at the American Association of Dental Research confirm that whitening with Opalescence PF will actually minimize sensitivity, provide anti-caries benefits, increase enamel microhardness, and improve overall enamel health.5,6,7,8

IMPORTANT: DENTIST SUPERvISION IS THE BEST WAY TO WHITEN!Tooth whitening treatments today are effective/efficacious and safe if they are used appropriately and with the correct materials. This includes an initial diagnosis, professional teeth cleaning, briefing on the chosen whitening process, and monitoring of the patient during the treatment phase. Self-treatment by the patient with over-the-counter (OTC) products often does not provide the results desired. All products of the Opalescence system are medical products, and are dispensed or released only by dental practitioners.

Potassium nitrate and fluoride decrease sensitivity while strengthening enamel and preventing caries.2,3,4,5,6 20% water content prevents dehydration and shade relapse, making Opalescence one of the most reliable bleaching gels available. Vital teeth whitened with Opalescence remain lighter for years.7,8,9,10 A university study proves gel stays active for 8-10 hours during overnight bleaching7, which means patients experience results quickly, increasing compliance. Opalescence is available in a variety of concentrations, formulations, flavors, and kit configurations to meet all your patients’ whitening needs.

Push material from white syringe to clear syringe 5 times back and forth remixing contents. Push varnish into white syringe for delivery. Twist on Fx Flex tip tightly and bend tip up to 90º angle if desired. varnish will not flow freely if tip is bent too far. Blot tooth surface dry prior to application. Express a small bead from the tip. Brush a smooth layer onto area being treated. Gently pull the lip over the tooth surface to ensure saliva contact with the varnish. The varnish hardens when it comes in contact with the saliva and will stay in place for several hours to days. Avoid brushing teeth or chewing hard foods for 4-6 hours after treatment

Oral Hygiene

Severe decalcification and caries due to poor hygiene during orthodontic treatment. Evidence shows that a significant amount of delcalcification can be prevented by applying fluoride varnish every six weeks.3

Study shows 75% reduction in decalcification around brackets with regular application of fluoride varnish.2 The AAPD recommends fluoride varnish “for use as a preventative adjunct to reduce enamel demineralization in children identified at risk for early childhood caries.”3 The use of fluoride varnish for caries prevention has also been endorsed by ADA.4

This treatment can be classified under ADA insurance code 9910: desensitizing medicaments.

After measuring overjet and selecting the right size, bite ramps are bonded to the lingual of upper

central incisors.

Bite ramps are adjusted for occlusal contact. After adjustment,

additional adhesive is added for strength and durability.

Disocclusion assists with intercuspal correction.

Bite ramps and Class II elastics can also promote mandibular

advancement in growing patients.

The Opal Bite Ramp is a unique adjustable orthodontic device used for opening the bite and assisting in Class II correction. Designed specifically for correction of Class II Division 2 cases, bite ramps can be utilized in any case requiring disocclusion. The variable lengths and adjustablility of the ramps allows for multi-functional movement from the beginning of orthodontic treatment.
