Stanhope to his illegitimate son, the book became a publishing phenomenon—22

editions in 60 years, and various abridged editions, such as this, making up more

than 120 editions in the same period. The book did cause some controversy,

particularly for Chesterfield’s lax morality: “he frequently recommends that his

son take mistresses for the express purpose of ‘smooth[ing] and polish[ing]’ his

manners. No wonder, then, that the pious Samuel Johnson famously condemned

the letters as ‘teach[ing] the morals of a whore, and the manners of a dancing

anti-laughter genre”, Vasey argues that sensible people do not laugh, and the

world would be better off if we were not taught to laugh as children (see Chapter

XVI “On the injurious effects of nursery rhymes and juvenile literature in

stultifying the minds of children and youths by furnishing them with extravagant

lies and egregious nonsense to excite their wonder and induce them to laugh”).

He also explores the contortions of the laughing face, which are thoroughly

illustrated, and includes an appendix on the horrors of tickling. [See photo]

“Snake Oil” Trade Cards

Commonly known as patent medicines, the tonics, pills, and powders advertised on

these trade cards were generally marketed directly to consumers, and very rarely

improved the ailments they targeted—often dyspepsia, rheumatism, fever, ague—as

advertised.

The cards here are largely American, produced during the heyday of the colour-

printed trade card popularity, 1870 to 1900. All cards very good to fine, some bear the

stamp of a regional retailer such as a druggist. We have many more trade cards for
