“Snake Oil” Trade Cards

Commonly known as patent medicines, the tonics, pills, and powders advertised on

these trade cards were generally marketed directly to consumers, and very rarely

improved the ailments they targeted—often dyspepsia, rheumatism, fever, ague—as

advertised.

The cards here are largely American, produced during the heyday of the colour-

printed trade card popularity, 1870 to 1900. All cards very good to fine, some bear the

stamp of a regional retailer such as a druggist. We have many more trade cards for

patent medicines as well as various hygiene and household products—visit our shop
