    Dear Columbus Symphony Supporter,

As we continue our season, we welcome back Principal Pops conductor Stuart Chafetz and again thank you for your support of quality, live performances of orchestral music in our community!

Our 2019-2020 Pops Series is in full swing after a sold-out Disney Concerts: Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. This season we offer three movies with live orchestra and three traditional Pops concerts.

Returning to the Ohio Theatre is conductor and composer Steve Hackman and his hit mashup Brahms v. Radiohead (November 9). This concert sold out in 2017, so he returns for an encore performance.

Next up is our long-standing annual Columbus tradition, Holiday Pops (December 6-8). Ronald J. Jenkins leads the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in some of the holiday season’s most-loved songs and carols. Bring the whole family and kick off your holiday season with the CSO!

The Wizarding world returns for a fourth year with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (January 18). Relive the magic across the big screen in high-definition and experience the Columbus Symphony performing Patrick Doyle’s unforgettable score.

This Valentine’s Day, join us for The Music of Frank Sinatra with Tony DeSare (February 14) at the Palace Theatre. What better way to spend the evening than listening to hits like “Come Fly with Me” and “One for My Baby.”

We continue with Grammy and Tony-nominated Michael Cavanaugh as he performs The Music of Elton John (April 4). He sold-out the Columbus Commons with his performance of The Music of Billy Joel at the 2018 Nationwide Picnic with the Pops, so this concert is sure to be a big hit.

We conclude our Pops season with the film that gave the world one of its greatest movie heroes, Indiana Jones. Don’t miss Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark in Concert (May 2). Relive the silver screen magic as the Columbus Symphony performs John Williams’ epic score.

We are beyond excited about what’s in store for Pops this season. On behalf of the entire Columbus Symphony family, we sincerely thank you for your enduring support, enthusiasm, and faith in this organization.

    Please enjoy this performance!

Steve Hackman is a daring voice leading the charge among a new generation of classical musicians intent on redefining the genre. Equally adept in classical and popular forms, his breadth of musical fluency and technique is uncanny—he is at once a composer, conductor, producer, DJ, arranger, songwriter, singer, pianist, and rapper. He uses those wide-ranging abilities to create ingenious hybrid compositions that blur the lines between high and pop art and challenge our very definitions thereof. The result is evocative hybrid works that are both derivative yet wholly original. His performances of these pieces have surprised and thrilled diverse sellout audiences across the country.

Beginning with the 2019-20 season, Hackman serves as Creative Director of the Indianapolis Symphony’s Stella Artois Happy Hours Series. In 2018, Hackman’s dream of assembling an orchestra of like-minded, creative virtuosos became a reality with the debut concert of Stereo Hideout at the Kings Theatre. Stereo Hideout is a hand-picked ensemble of the crème de la crème of young classical musicians in New York City, many of whom are multi-genre composers, arrangers, songwriters, and musical disruptors themselves. Their concerts continue to feature Hackman’s hybrid and original works, guest artists, as well as showcase projects of the orchestra members.

In October 2018, Hackman debuted his newest creation, West Side X West Side, an orchestral/hip-hop synthesis of Bernstein’s West Side Story and the music of West Coast rappers. In January 2018, Hackman premiered his choral treatment of Bob Dylan, The Times They Are A-Changin’ with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. The piece was commissioned by six American choirs.

Past roles have included creative director and conductor of FUSE@PSO, a genre-defying series of the Pittsburgh Symphony that introduced the symphony and its repertoire to thousands of new listeners; music director of the “Mash-Up” series at the Colorado Music Festival; co-creative director of the Indianapolis Symphony’s Happy Hour at the Symphony Series; and music director of Time for Three from 2011-2012.

Recordings include the Stereo Hideout albums The Radio Nouveau (2014), Down with the Classics (2017), and The Gates Unknown (2018). He has composed and arranged works for ensembles and artists as diverse as the string trio Time for Three, violinist Joshua Bell, and choral ensembles Chanticleer and The Tallis Scholars. His orchestrations for artists like Time for Three, The Five Browns, Michael Cavanaugh, My Brightest Diamond, Arlo Guthrie, Aoife O’Donovan and Joshua Radin have been performed by nearly all the major orchestras in America. Hackman is a frequent contributor to From the Top. A prolific songwriter, his “The Pendulum Song” was chosen among tens of thousands as a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, and he has received honorable mention in the Billboard songwriting competition.

Hackman is active on social media under the handle @stevehackmanmusic, and on YouTube via the @stereohideout channel.

Known for his soaring vocals, beautiful compositions, and out-of-this-world projection mapped live shows, Will Post is a true musical tour-de-force. Post has been writing and performing music since he was 6 years old and through the decades he has honed his taste and talents in nearly every way, from orchestras to a cappella groups, Warped Tour to Carnegie Hall, and everywhere in between.

Post creates mind-bending live shows using projection mapped visuals that feel like a modern day Fantasia—taking audiences through a fully-immersive visual and sonic

journey of the soul. The genesis album for this concept, Panthenon won the Independent Music Award’s first prize in the Concept Album category in 2015.

As a highly in-demand performer, Post has had the honor of being a featured soloist with some of the top orchestras in the U.S., including the symphonies of San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Nashville, and Oregon.

He also is a prolific composer, collaborator, and award-winning arranger. His instrumental compositions can be heard in movies, TV shows, and trailers all over the world. As a producer and performer, he was a founding member of the chip tune-based rock band I Fight Dragons, and has mixed songs for many artists over a wide spectrum of genres, including Chance the Rapper, I Fight Dragons, Dana Williams, Elijah Noll, Roy English, and many others.

Post feels most at home when combining his classical sensibilities with the ethos of the current moment, creating work that serves the now and launches itself into the future, toward eternity.

The field of music is a vast exploration for Kéren. She “sang before she could speak,” and grew up in a multicultural environment where Western and Eastern musics were celebrated and influential. At the age of seven, Kéren began her musical theater career performing on some of New York City’s prominent stages. As she entered her teen years, Kéren picked up the guitar, which opened doors in the worlds of songwriting and accompaniment, and allowed for her musical palette to expand into new territories. During her years studying at the Berklee College of Music, Kéren was featured in many of the school’s major showcases, and could frequently be found in the studio late into the night, working on various albums, recording projects, and commercial jingles.

Kéren ventured to the West Coast soon after her studies to work with renowned music industry personnel, and recorded her debut album Bliss Point with her band, Jungle Fires. As her career continues to develop and expand, Kéren enjoys collaborations with a variety of artists and producers and also tours and performs around the world. Since 2015, Kéren has been working with Steve Hackman on various projects including his mash-up series, performing in the Brahms vs. Radiohead program, as well as in the Copland vs. Bon Iver program. Through these works, she has been honored to perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Nashville Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, and many others.

After Kéren’s initiation into meditation practices and healing modalities, she began to use her musical skill-set to accompany and deepen her practices, working with soundscape design, voice, indigenous/world instruments, singing bowls, and more.

Kéren looks forward to continuing her exploration of music and sound as a means for connection, community, and healing. In her upcoming endeavor, Kéren will release her original compositions and arrangements for the first time as a solo artist in a new project. (Follow @kerensound for info!)

It is with deep gratitude and that Kéren shares her gifts.

A native of St. Louis, Ronald Jenkins has been conductor of the Columbus Symphony Chorus and Chamber Chorus since 1982. He conceived the idea for the CSO’s popular Holiday Pops concerts and has conducted those annual performances since their beginning in 1983. In 2010, he conducted the CSO’s first complete performances of Handel’s Messiah, which were lauded for their “quick pacing and brisk tempos” and the chorus, which “was superbly balanced and in tune and obviously well-rehearsed and confident.” He also prepared the chorus for their Carnegie Hall debut with the CSO in the spring of 2001, where the New York critics praised the “choral singing of impeccable realization and subtle shading.”

This season he prepared the chorus for the powerful and highly-acclaimed Midwest premiere of Moravec’s Sanctuary Road, as well as a concert presentation of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess on October 11 and 12, and then the Chamber Chorus for Handel’s Messiah on November 23 and 24, and will prepare the chorus for Verdi’s Stabat Mater and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 on April 17 & 18, 2020, all under Rossen Milanov’s direction. Jenkins also will prepare and conduct the chorus and orchestra in four performances of the 36th annual Columbus favorite, “Holiday Pops” December 6, 7 and 8, a concert with Andrea Bocelli on December 14

at the Schottenstein Center, and a special Choral Concert, Songs of Hope and Comfort, April 3, 2020, which will include Durufle’s Requiem and other 20th and 21st century choral works.

From September 1973 until January 2019, he served as the Minister of Music and Liturgy of the 3,400 member First Community Church in Columbus. In that position, he was responsible for two choirs, a staff of singers, conductors and organists, the church’s concert series, and coordinated worship/liturgy, art enrichment, and special events, including the annual fall services of music and the word, Soli Deo Gloria, the Festival of Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, and the season-concluding “MorningSong,” all with choir and members of the CSO and CSC. He directed the Chancel Choir on three European tours, at the National Cathedral in DC, and the Chamber Singers in Naples, Florida. On the third European tour in June of 2013, he led the choir in concerts in Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Prague, and Salzburg, gaining rave reviews for their performance of Mozart’s “Missa Longa” with the Salzburg, Cathedral orchestra. He produced and directed eight recordings of the Chancel Choir and demonstrated his piano keyboard skills in a popular duo recording of Gospel Hymns with retired CSO trumpeter Tom Battenberg.

He has served as the Assistant Choral Director at Washington University, visiting Choral Director at Denison and Ohio Wesleyan Universities, and led choral workshops for Trinity Seminary and various professional organizations. He holds degrees from William Jewell College and Florida State University. He has also done extensive post-graduate study at Washington University and studied conducting at the Tanglewood Music Festival. In 1985, he received the Columbus Dispatch Community Service Award for the Advancement of Culture. In May, 2015, he was granted the Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Trinity Seminary, Bexley, Ohio.

  • MICHAEL CAVANAUGH, vocal ist

Michael Cavanaugh is the new voice of the American Rock & Roll Songbook, and a charismatic performer and musician made famous for his piano/lead vocals in the Broadway musical Movin’ Out. Handpicked by Billy Joel to star in Movin’ Out, Cavanaugh evokes a style rivaling the Piano Man. He appeared in the show for three years, with over 1,200 performances, and received multiple accolades. The show culminated in 2003 with both Grammy and Tony award nominations.

Michael began playing at age seven, when his parents bought their first piano. Encouraged by family and friends, and inspired by his hero Billy Joel, Michael formed his first band at age 10 and began playing local functions, fine-tuning the craft that would become his chosen career. His first full-time gig as a musician was an extended engagement in Orlando, Florida, at a piano bar called Blazing Pianos. In January of 1999, Michael received an offer that would unknowingly change his life: an opportunity to play Las Vegas at the famed New York, New York Hotel and Casino. It was there that Billy Joel spotted Michael and joined him on stage one fateful night of February 2001. It only took two songs before Billy was convinced that he had found his new Piano Man: Michael Cavanaugh. Michael closed up shop at New York, New York and moved to New

York City to work alongside Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp to shape the Broadway musical that would be called Movin’ Out. In the lead role, he received both Tony and Grammy nominations.

With the close of Movin’ Out at the end of 2005, Michael began touring in his own right, creating a show that reinterprets the modern pop/rock songbook. Michael soon became one of the hottest artists in the private events market, and he continues to perform worldwide for company and charity events as well as sporting events, including many PGA tour events, the Super Bowl, and the Indy 500. His interpretation of the modern rock/pop songbook led to Billboard calling him “The New Voice of the American Rock and Roll Songbook,” and he was recognized by Reuters as Entertainer of the Year for the private events market.

It wasn’t long before symphony orchestras discovered Michael’s talents and audience appeal. He accepted his first orchestral booking, “Michael Cavanaugh – The Songs of Billy Joel and More,” which debuted in April 2008 with the Indianapolis Symphony and continues to tour today. In October 2008, he signed with Warner/ADA to distribute his first CD, In Color. In June 2010, Michael debuted his second symphony show in the Generations of Rock series, titled “Michael Cavanaugh: The Songs of Elton John and More,” and then debuted his third symphony show, “Singers and Songwriters: the Music of Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, and James Taylor,” in 2012. In 2015, he debuted his fourth symphony show: “Rockin’ Christmas with the Pops.” He continues to tour all four symphony productions, along with performing with his band in performing arts centers and other public venues.

The Way I Hear It, his second commercial album, was released in April 2017, debuting at #17 on the Billboard “Heatseakers” chart.
