From the Preps and Year 1’s Term three is a very exciting one for the Juniors as we start the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. It will run for the next six weeks with both classes gardening on Monday and the Preps cooking on Tuesday and the Ones on Wednesday. A couple of reminders, please ensure your child is appropriately dressed for gar-dening and long hair MUST be tied back for cooking. To coincide with the SAKG program both classes will be studying the topic ‘From paddock to plate’. This will involve looking at where does our food come from and how does it get to be on our dinner table. Last week we started with what is some well-known foods made from e.g chips are from potato and bacon is from pigs. In English we will be studying procedural texts, this will include things like recipes and sets of instructions on how to make things. We will also be looking at verbs, sequencing events from a text and fluency when reading aloud. The Preps will finish the remaining sounds in the Jollyphonics program e.g ch/sh and th whilst the Ones will begin a differentiated spelling program. In Maths the main topics for the term will be sharing (division), money and time. Both classes have started a show and tell program with each child having a specific day to share and particular topics each week. If you are unsure of what day or what the topics are please contact the teacher.

As always if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Cheers, Andrew and Travis

Wellbeing YEAR 1’s Starting from next week the Year one’s will be learning about looking after ourselves. The topics range from personal care to personal safety. During this unit the students will develop the skills to help them identify feel-ings and emotions and teach them some strategies to deal with them.

Years 2/3 Welcome back to term 3! This term, in our integrated curriculum, the students are exploring the concept of change through things that affect their lives: “Change is around”. Everything in our physical world changes and understanding how and why these changes occur helps us in our daily lives. In this unit, students will explore the human life cycle and how they have changed over time. They will observe and describe changes to the day and night skies and ana-lyse changes in their own local environment to identify natural and constructed landscapes. They will consider the connection of Australia’s Indigenous peoples to the land and skies and explore the impact of changing tech-nology on people’s lives. They will conduct science experiments e.g. how heat can change matter. Students will have the opportunity to research and investigate further, a topic of their choice around this topic. If you have any related books, posters or artefacts that you are happy to share during this investigation, they would be greatly appreciated. In English, our focus is on: Utilising reading strategies such as, identifying the main idea and visualising, when reading big books and

in our reading groups Exploring different writing strategies such as show don’t tell to enrich our writing Persuasive texts, using persuasive language to present our option on a given topic Exploring a variety of children’s authors to do a mini-author study unit Creating our own picture books for start to finish In Mathematics, our focus is on: Money (e.g. counting and ordering Australian coins and notes according to their value, representing mon-

ey values in multiple ways and counting change for simple transactions) Multiplication and division (e.g. using repeated addition, equal groups or arrays and solving simple prob-

lems) Area (measuring, comparing and ordering shapes based on area using appropriate informal units or famil-

iar metric units (metres, centimetres) Shape (e.g. describing and drawing two-dimensional shapes and making models of three-dimensional ob-

jects and describing key features). Looking forward to a fabulous term, Wendy and Celeste

Year 4 Welcome Back to Term 3! This term we are looking at inspiring Australians. In particular, we are focusing on famous Australian artists and inventors. Last week, the students conducted some research to find things they would like to learn about. Towards the end of the term, the students will be completing their own project on an invention or piece of artwork.

In English, we will continue to follow the Words Their Way spelling pro-gram and incorporate explicit grammar lessons. In reading, we are focus-ing on fluency, expression and ability to comprehend the text. Some of the strategies we will be exploring are questioning, making connections and finding the main idea. In writing, we will be looking at different

writing styles such as biographies, information reports, procedural and persuasive texts. We will also be using the Seven Steps Writing Program to enhance our students writing. In speaking and listening, we are looking at how we communicate with our bodies, opinions and other formal/informal opportunities. In Mathematics, we are focusing on place value, division, frac-tions, money and chance.

Years 5/6 This term our topic is “Artists and Scientists”. Each week we will be investigating and learning about famous scientist/artist and looking closely at their biography, scientific advancements or techniques that have changed the world. People like Marie Curie and Michelangelo. Students are learning to write and read a biography; looking for relevant information, they will be comparing and contrasting different examples of lives, developing timelines and seeing how bodies of work directly impact upon their lives. Later in the term we will be creating podcasts with interviews of our chosen historical figures. All this work is getting embedded into a website we are creating to capture our work. Students have been surveyed about their reading preferences which will continue to be used in read-ing groups and independent reading. Students will be recognising genre and explaining why they have their specific preferences. In Mathematics, this term is heavily concentrating upon fractions and decimals, converting between and how they fit onto our number system. We will also be seeing how percentages impact our finan-cial decisions and making shopping lists with discounts applied. Bookending our week, all year five and sixes are working together in large outdoor organised games where we have been looking at our TABSI - Teamwork, Agility, Ballhandling, Strategy and Integrity in game play. Excitingly, the final few weeks of term see us back in the kitchen with the Stephanie Alexander Kitch-en Garden program - where we will be honing our skills in following directions and whipping up a culi-nary storm.

5/6 Art Term Outline: This term the 5/6 students will be investigating different artists and applying their art styles and techniques to cre-ate their own artworks. We will focus on each artist for several weeks to ensure the students develop a clear understanding and application of the style adopted by each artist. Over the term stu-dents will experiment with sculpting, painting, pastels and sketching.

The students will also be developing their ability to reflect and record their own art process, engaging them with how they create their final piece is beneficial to understanding their creative journey. They will think about how they created each piece, what order things

happened, what materials they used, difficulties they faced and the mes-sage their art is trying to convey and how. Bec Borg

Art P-4 Prep and Year 1. This term we are looking at point and circles, our mentor artists are Wassily Kandinsky and Yayoi Kusama. Stu-dents will be working on a range of 2D and 3D artworks using stickers, pastels, paint, found objects and air-dry clay. Later in the term we are hoping to link in with the learning in the kitchen garden by making some model pumpkins and painting them with dots in the style of Yayoi Kusama. To start off the term, we have been looking at the piece “Squares with Concentric Circles” created in 1913 by Wassily Kandinsky. Puppet Wassily met with the children this week to encourage them with their work and remind them to focus on rounded lines for mak-ing circles.

Year 2/3 Everyone was really excited when they found out that we would be learning some basic sewing skills this term (so much so that a whole class cheered!). We are starting out by sewing our name or initials onto some lovely fabric samples donated by Grade 2/3 teacher Wendy. These will later be sewn together to make a special sur-prise gift for each of the grade 2/3 classrooms. Next we are going to learn about the artist Mirka Mora and her beautiful dolls and have a go at painting and sewing our own toys.

Year 4: Grade 4s are further refining their drawing and painting skills this term, trying a range of techniques such as drawing from observation and using a grid. We will look at the artists Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso, exploring their use of line, shape, colour and symbolism. So far, students have been working on some still life drawings and developing their rendering of realistic detail, light and shadow using colour pencil.
