its unique properties when compared to other common manufacturing materials.

Weighing up the DifferenceThe investment by Accurate in the very best CNC Grinding Machines ensures granite components are
produced to outstanding straightness and flatness specifications thereby minimizing the final hand-lapping process. All granite CMM motion
components are core drilled before grinding removing as much mass as possible ensuring an Accurate all-
granite CMM frame has competitive measuring performances when
compared to the lighter, thin-walled, aluminum framed CMMs offered by
many competitors.
Scanning Performance 1stThe black Impala Granite Accurate CMM line was developed using finite
element analysis techniques and created as a scanning CMM; the demands on scanning CMM frames are far more than demanded for
touch probe application. Stiffness with minimum deformation are demanded due to the
acceleration forces exerted by continuous motion scanning and the ever changing CMM motion directions.
Granite CMM structures are renowned for their stiffness and the structure of choice by all manufacturers for their ultra high performance scanning CMM’s. Granite offers the perfect scanning platform when compared to
aluminum framed CMM’s which are far less rigid.
Stiffer than the CompetitionThe CMM structural deflections caused by acceleration varies greatly within a CMM frame. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of an example structure shown
demonstrates that least deflection occurs at the point of attachment of the
moving bridge to the base plate. The greatest deflection is at the opposite side (non drive side) and also at the
probe attachment point also. The use of stiffer materials for the CMM bridge
beam and Z ram is the optimum method for reducing these metrology critical
acceleration deflections.Granite therefore is the perfect CMM materials to minimize these dynamic
deflections.
Symmetrical Design Standards A symmetrical CMM rectangular bridge beam will dissipate heat with its environment in a uniform manner whereas a non-symmetrical triangular CMM bridge beam will not as shown in the diagram. The resulting rectangular beam will expand and contract in a more predictable manner that the triangular beam enhancing machine stability.
Thermal compensation employed by CMM manufacturers typically only modifies axis linearity scale parameters and the software must assume linear thermal expansion which in practice does not happen.
Intellectually ThickAccurate bridge CMM’s are supplied with
granite base plates hand lapped, to AA surface plate standard, and with plate thickness greater
than the industry normal. The stability of all bridge CMM’s comes from its surface plate; cost pressures over past decades has caused CMM
builders to ‘thin’ plates dramatically and no longer provide their granite tables to surface-
plate flatness standards. Not so with Accurate CMM’s .
Accurate does not compromise product quality or technical integrity to maximize profit margins. While
some competitor’s even measure the deformation of their thin granite plates,
attempting to compensate for this deformation, with software Accurate continues with sound and proven engineering principles to produce
its stiff and stable CMM’s.
Changing Standards!Granite is an expensive raw material to buy and expensive to process. It’s also expensive to ship due to its mass. Over
the years CMM manufacturers have used less granite in its CMM base plates to
save both material costs, processing time and shipping costs.
But at what cost to the user? Look at the granite base thickness on this 25+ year veteran Renault-Federal CMM
that’s still in daily. The Renault designers obviously knew the role the granite plate had in creating a stable CMM platform.
What Changed!
Granite InsertsAccurate CMM’s are supplied with practical M10 threaded inserts on a dense 200mm x 200m grid pattern. The trend in past years has been to reduce granite CMM plate inserts reducing costs and some popular CMM’s are now supplied with inserts on a 400mm grid matrix forcing the use of fixture plates and limiting severely the positioning of Renishaw Change Racks.
Round or Square Air Bearings?Accurate CMM’s are supplied with single jet
cylindrical air bearings rather than the cheaper rectangular style bearing used by most price
driven competitors machines. The Accurate air bearings have a hemi-spherical pocket ground into their surface providing a air cushion for
the bearing to float upon rather than just rely on bearing lift created through bearing air flow.
Circular bearings do no suffer from rotational issues that plague rectangular bearings and are perfectly stiff. Rectangular bearings suffer from
‘curling’ whereby the created air-pressure forces causes a deflection of the rectangular bearing at either end reducing their overall
efficiency and impacting negatively on CMM accuracy particularly in demanding scanning
applications.
Bellows ProtectionThe Accurate Bridge CMM’s X and Y axis are
fully enclosed with concertina bellows. These reinforced machine tool quality blinds are
secured using ‘Velco’ allowing quick detachment for maintenance. Frictionless in
performance the bellows infer no drag to each individual CMM axis.
Accurate Green CMMAccurate CMM air consumption is minimized reducing running costs and also significantly quieter in operation than CMM’s with free flowing rectangular ‘whistling’ air bearings.
Each group of air bearings can be regulated for flow and pressure from the master control
panel mounted on the machine base allowing your CMM performance to be optimised at
every annual service intervention. Individual axes can be switched off during the
CMM calibration procedure. Competitors’ cost reduced CMM structures
have a single air entry point with no individual air-bearing flow regulation meaning air
starvation to the weakest link bearing will occur over time resulting in potential machine damage and expensive service interventions.
All pneumatics are from industry leader SMC including the piping ensuring local availability globally. Cheaper air hoses used by competitors perish with time and require an expensive re-hose after just a few years; this can take up to 2 days to complete and is expensive.
CMM Thermal EncapsulationThe granite X-Z bridge beam steel supporting
structure of Accurate CMM’s are fully encapsulated by covers providing an air gap
between cover and support forcing any environment thermal change to have to
radiant through the covers and the air gap before having any impact on the CMM
metrology structure. Combined with the thermally inert granite structure the design provides a thermally
stable CMM structure.
Accurate CMM MotionAccurate CMM’s are supplied with either the Renishaw UCC Controller solution or Pantec
Eagle. Both CMM Controllers have well proven reliability and performance for touch probe
and scanning applications.Uniquely for a CMM supplier Accurate focuses on its core business of CMM frame design and
manufacture leaving the CMM Controller business to the experts.
An Accurate CMM can be supplied with your preferred CMM software including the Renishaw MODUS product since both
controllers support the I++ interface and offer open architecture calibration and service
software tools. Either controller can be configured to support
Renishaw SP25 or SP80 scanning probes.
