How We Can Damage Our Online Reputation 12. How We Can Damage Our Online Reputation On the internet. Your reach is much greater, so the potential for your reputation to be damaged is exponentially higher. Not to mention that what goes on online stays on the online. 13. How We Can Damage Our Online Reputation Posting inappropriate content You cant delete your online activity. No matter how many times you try, that post, picture, or comment will stay there forever. Even if you think its gone those who know how to, will find it. Rule of thumb if wouldnt want your mom/boss to see it, dont post it anywhere online. 14. How We Can Damage Our Online Reputation Being Negative Those who complain online will be known by their perceived attitude, and that perception is shaped online by what you choose to put there. The way you choose to discuss things will determine whether your readers interpret your musings as interesting or annoying. Be positive, be inquisitive, but dont be negative. 15. Over-Sharing Online 16. Telling The World How You Feel 17. How Can I Protect My Online Reputation? In this world reputation counts for a lot, is difficult to build and easy to lose so look after it like your most prized possession. If you are keen to keep a close eye on your online reputation there is plenty you can do. Google yourself, dont forget about Google Images too. Accept that nothing is ever truly private online. Always use privacy settings on social media but know that your private pictures could be shared by anyone of your friends. So never post any pictures of yourself that you dont want the world to see. If someone else posts a picture of you on Facebook that you find embarrassing, dont hesitate to remove the tag that identifies it as you. Post positive content on Social Media. Join as many social networks as you can manage and post some positive content on them at least once a month. The more positive content you share the further back unwanted content will go. 18. Measuring Your Digital Footprint How to measure what the Internet says about you. 19. What is a Digital Footprint? A Digital Footprint is a data trail left by interactions in a digital environment including the use of television, mobile phones, the world wide web, the internet and other connected devices and sensors. A Digital footprint provides data on what has been preformed in the digital environment, and that data can be used in behavioral targeting & economics, personalisation, targeted marketing, digital reputation, social influence and social media or social graphing services. 20. What is a Digital Footprint? In Social Media a digital footprint can refer to the size of a persons online presence measured by the number of individuals by whom they interact. (Wikipedia) Whenever you click, search, like, share, tweet etc. you deepen your digital footprint even further, your location, IP address, what you have said online and what others have said online about you is the sort of data that is used in targeting and marketing. 21. Steps are different for each provider. 30. Privacy Settings Take control of your online reputation 31. Privacy Settings Social has given us a unique opportunity to connect and share with people in our lives online. But with this opportunity comes responsibility to respect social media for exactly what it is. You need to be carful about the content you post online and how you protect it. 32. Three Categories of Internet Privacy 33. Privacy Settings on Facebook The information you put up on Facebook is public, not private. If you dont change your settings anyone can see what you post on the web, that is why protecting what you post online is important. There are 3 places where you can control your Privacy on Facebook: Under Privacy Settings for your account On individual posts And on your Profile Each offers its own set of options so that you can pick & choose what you share. 34. Privacy Settings on Twitter When you sign up for Twitter, you have the option to keep your Tweets public (the default account setting) or to protect your Tweets. Public Tweets (the default setting) are visible to anyone, whether or not they have a Twitter account. Protected Tweets may only be visible to your approved Twitter followers. When you protect your Tweets, the following restrictions are put in place: People will have to request to follow you; each follow request will need approval. Your Tweets will only be visible to users you've approved. Other users will not be able to retweet your Tweets. Protected Tweets will not appear in Google search; protected Tweets will only be searchable on Twitter by the account holder and approved followers. @Replies you send to people who aren't following you will not be seen by those users (because you have not given them permission to see your Tweets). 35. How to Protect Tweets Go to your Security & Privacy Settings Scroll down to the Tweet privacy section and check the box next to Protect my Tweets. Click the blue Save button at the bottom of the page. You will be prompted to enter your password to confirm the change. 36. Privacy on Instagram If you're public on Instagram, anyone can subscribe to follow your photos. There is however a special private option. In this mode, a user can make sure he/she must approve all follow requests before they go through. How can you make Instagram Private? Go to your profile 37. Privacy on Instagram Tap Edit Your Profile next to your profile picture. For iPhone/iPad and Android, scroll down to Posts Are Private and slide it to On. For Windows Phone, check the box next to Posts are Private. Once you make your posts private, people will have to send you a follow request if they want to see your posts. You'll see requests in your news feed which you can accept or ignore. 38. Vine Privacy Profiles and posts on Vine are public by default, which means that anyone on the service can view and share them. Public posts Visable to all vine users Shareable to Twitter, Facebook and anyone with the URL can view it. Anyone can comment on your vines. Anyone can follow you. Your vines can be revined. Private Posts Your vines are visible to your followers only. You choose who can share and comment on your vines. Users must request to follow you. Your vines cannot be revined 39. Vine Privacy Settings 40. Snapchat Privacy Settings Snapchat has two privacy settings, one for who can send you Snaps and another for who can see your Stories. Both have two options "Everyone" and "My Friends." By default, only users you add to your friends list can send you Snaps. If a Snapchatter you haven't added as a friend tries to send you a Snap, you'll receive a notification that they added you. But you will not receive the Snap they sent unless you add them to your friends list. 41. Screenshots & Snapchat What you send on Snapchat could also damage your online reputation if Screenshotted & posted online. Taking a screenshot is possible Snapchat doesnt support saving received messages But Smartphone operating systems like Apples iOS and Googles Android do allow you to take screenshots. Its also possible to take a picture of the screen with another camera such as a friends phone camera. If someone takes a screenshot Snapchat tries to notify the person who sent the Snapchat, however several apps have been made so that this notification will not be sent. 42.
