The Capt. Joseph J. Boccia Jr. USMC
1983 Beirut Lebanon
Born June 25, 1955 to Patricia and Joseph J. Boccia. The 2nd oldest of 6 children. A 1973 Northport High School Graduate, Joe was a long time record holding runner in the mile as well as a Cross Country Champion. Joe went on to run at Syracuse University, where he graduated in 1977. In true Warrior fashion, Joe passed on the invitation of Officer’s Candidate School and chose instead to join the United States Marine Corps as an enlisted man. His true calling was to be A Marine. On October 23, 1983, while serving in a Multinational Peacekeeping mission, a suicide truck Laden bombs carrying over 2000 pounds of explosives struck the building housing the US troops. The explosions leveled the building to rubble. On that October morning, the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit (1st Battalion 8th Marines) lost 220 Marines. Also perished were 18 Sailors, 3 soldiers with an additional 128 wounded. What is has now become known as the “The Beirut Bombing”. The Beirut families’ motto is “The first Duty is to remember”
Joseph J. Boccia Jr. has personified the statement; “Once a Marine, always a Marine”
