The Alliance System
Triple EntenteThe Triple Entente (sometimes referred to as the Allies) was created in reaction to the forming of the Triple Alliance, and to balance the growing power of Germany by being more powerful itself. The main members of this alliance included France, Great Britain and Russia.
Smaller alliances: • The Treaty of London, signed in 1867 long before the Entente, agreed
that Britain would protect Belgium's right to be neutral in a European conflict; and Russia had signed an agreement promising to protect Serbia.
• Italy was persuaded to join the alliance in 1915 when the Treaty of London promised them land if they fought for the Triple Entente.
• August- December 1916: Romania enters the war with the Triple Entente.
• 27th June 1917: Greece enters the war on the side of the Triple Entente.

Triple AllianceIn opposition to the Entente alliance were the Triple Alliance (sometimes referred to as the Central Powers).
Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy formed the Triple Alliance. In 1882, they signed a document that promised they would give each other military support in case of a war.
In 1879 Germany and Austria-Hungary agreed to form a Dual Alliance. This became the Triple Alliance when in 1882 it was expanded to include Italy
Smaller alliances: Italy still did not entirely trust Austria-Hungary, so made a secret treaty with France after the joining the Triple Alliance.
29th October 1914: Turkey joined the war on the side of the Triple Alliance.
1915: Bulgaria joined the war on the side of the Triple Alliance.
