Introduction An Age Manager plays an important role in the development of junior members within Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA). Junior members comprise almost 40% of the total membership of SLSA. You will join other Age Managers on the beaches across Australia helping to make the junior surf lifesaving experience fun, safe and challenging. Continuing education credit will be given to Age Managers who complete this course and who wish to pursue further pathways within Surf Life Saving (eg. coaching, officiating).

Prerequisites x Be a current financial member of a club x Have completed the relevant state working with children check requirements x Be a minimum of 16 years (higher in some states)

Becoming an accredited Age Manager To become a qualified Age Manager you must do the following:

x Complete the SLSA Age Managers online theory course x Sign the Code of Conduct provided in this guide x Undertake a 2-hour on-the-beach practical session to gain an introductory understanding of surf skills (at branch/state

discretion, this may be waived if the participant has a surf background such as proficient Bronze Medallion) x Work with an experienced Age Manager mentor in your club to complete the required Third Party Form and have it

signed off by an approved mentor x Return your completed Third Party Form and Certification Form to your course presenter or State Office as advised at the

theory course

Learning Outcomes By the end of the course and successful completion of practical requirements, you will be able to:

x Understand the roles and responsibilities of the Age Manager x Develop strategies to work with children, parents, coaches, officials and club administrators x Manage risks in the beach environment x Cater for the physical, emotional and social development of juniors in their care x Safely conduct training sessions ensuring fun and participation through games and activities x Utilise a range of communication, teaching and behaviour management strategies to help juniors learn basic skills

How to access the online resource

1. Become a member of a Surf Life Saving Club. https://sls.com.au

2. Create a SLS Member’s Portal account at https://portal.sls.com.au

3. Sign in to the SLS Members Portal and go to ‘Lifesaving Online’

4. Select ‘Courses’

5. Select ‘Go to Online Learning now’

6. You will be automatically redirected to the SLS Australian Lifesaving Academy. You can change the view you are presented

with using the tabs to the left:

7. Select the ‘Age Managers Course’ to launch the online component.

8. Click on the course again to open it.

9. The course will open in a new window.

10. When you have finished the course, go to the ‘Personal Learning Plan’ tab drop-down menu and navigate to ‘Certificates’

to print your completion certificate to take with you to your face-to-face session.

Trouble shooting

I can’t log in to the Members Portal Contact the SLSA IT Helpline on 1300 724 006

I can’t see the course I am enrolled in. Try changing the view of your ‘Personal Learning Plan’ as per Step 6.

I can’t launch the course. You need to have pop-ups turned ON. The courseware works through a series of pop-ups. If you do not know how to do this, contact the SLSA IT Helpline 1300 724 006

When I open the course, it doesn’t seem to work properly. This course is designed to work optimally on laptops or desktops. There may be some operational issues on tablets and smartphones. Try updating your operating system to the most recent version, clear your browser history and cache and try again. If you continue to have problems, please let the SLSA IT Helpline know (1300 724 006) and we will try to fix it.

I am stuck on one slide. The ‘next’ button isn’t available. There are some activities through the course that you need to complete. In some cases, you won’t be able to move on to the next slide until you have completed them.

I don’t know the answer to a question. Where can I find the Age Manager’s Guide to look it up? Go back to the previous screen and look for the resources tab on the right.

This will open up a list of resources. Select the one that you want. This will open in a new tab.

Third party form The following tasks must be completed under the guidance of an experienced Age Manager mentor. It is expected that they will be completed in the context of a 6 hour mentoring context on the beach with a group.
