However, the learning, at all levels of education, has become synonymous with accumulation of information. Hence education is dominated by a question-answer approach where the emphasis is on the right answer alone. This has resulted in a boring paper-based, rote memorization, teacher-led instruction patterns. All assessments of student learning is done by assessing the correctness of the answer with little importance to the process of arriving at it. Hence only accumulation of information is encouraged.

Project Based Learning, on the other hand, begins from the clarity that:•Possessing information is not learning / understanding. •Understanding happens in the state of experiencing alone. •Experiencing results in accumulation of information.

Experiencing should be actual and hands on for maximum effectiveness. But this may not be practicable for the entirety of the academic content. Project Based Learning is a form of virtual experiencing that simulates experiencing and, consequently, results in learning as well as accumulation of information, within the boundaries of time, school and home.

Project Based Learning is not an invention of the 21st Century as we may tend to think.In 1897, John Dewey, the American education reformer, said:"The teacher is not in the school to impose certain ideas or to form certain habits in the child, but is there as a member of the community to select the influences which shall affect the child and to assist him in properly responding to these.......I believe, therefore, in the so-called expressive or constructive activities as the centre of correlation."

S. Gopalan-Gopalan has been an educator with schools of Krishnamurti Foundation India since 1983 inspired by the philosopher savant J. Krishnamurti.

Holistic education that encourages Initiative and Creativity to flower in every student has been his primary concern in education. Gopal has also authored “Bud to Blossom”: Blooming Creativity In Life And Education, which is being read by several educators in India, Europe and the USA.
