INTRODUCTION

Educational technology refers to the application of physical science

and engineering technology to provide mechanical or electromechanical

tools instrumentation or hard ware, which can be used for instructional

purpose. It places as much stress on educational ideas as on

technological inventions largely because it accepts that fundamental

advances usually come from the interaction of changing concepts leading

the new ways of looking at things with changing techniques leading to

new ways of doing things m-learning is the part of educational technology

The concept of mobile learning goes right back to the 19075 when

companies such as lingua phone started releasing recordings of language

lessons that could be listened to at the learners convenience. The term

m-learning is a much more recent modification motivated by mobile

communications technology and modeled on expressions such as e-

learning which refers more generally to learning and teaching supported

by computers and other electronic devices

MOBILE LEARNING

In the term m-learning m stands for mobile and the same concept

is also often simply referred to as mobile learning. M-learning is any kind

of learning that takes place via a portable hand-held electronic device.

Though the term immediately conjures up images of smart phones, it in

facts also refers to learning via other kind of mobile devices, such as

tablet computers, net books and digital readers. M-learning can take

place any where and any time responding to the needs of an always on

society by providing learners with materials and resources that they can

access wherever and wherever they chose. As well as giving the learner

new freedoms, it also increases the flexibility of teachers and instructors

M-learning is often viewed as a competent of a learning programme,

something that supports the learning process as an add-on tool, rather

than being the principal learning method. In M-learning learning takes

place by a combination and web based resources.

What is Mobile learning?

Mobile learning is the ability to obtain or provide educational

content on personal pocket device such as PDAS, smart phones and

mobile phones. Educational content refers to digital learning assets

which includes any form of content or media made available on a

personal device.

Mobile learning using had held computers is in its infancy in terms

of both technologies and pedagogies. As a result there is still some

dispute amongst industry advocates in how mobile learning should be

defined in terms of devices and techno logies, interms of the mobility of

learners and the mobility of learning and in terms of the learners

experience of learning with mobile devices.

How is that different from e-learning

E-learning has come to define any dissemination of educational

knowledge over the internet. This makes e-learning a subset of

technology based training. It also incorporates a number of learning

activities conducted on the internet of which mobile learning is one part

many authors view mobile learning simply as the natural evolution of e-

learning which compete a missing component such as the wireless

feature or as a new stage of distance and e-learning.

Features of m-learning

SAAS Capabilities

m-learning can be deployed in the “software as a service” format

ensuring any time, anywhere accessibility.

Browser based AMS

The assessments can be browser based

Web 2.0 tools

m-learning makes available all the web 2.0 tools to the learner,

thus enriching his learning experience. Learners can used the wiki,

discussion forums, RSS feeds and pod casts.

Flexible learning spaces

m-learning space can be configured in the open, content based or

profile based formats.

Useful information at hand for students.

Students can access useful information such as daily classes and

assessments exam results and career alerts, as well as the

instructors for clarifications. The two way SMS enables on topics

and offer lecture feedback.

Rich content on mobile

m-learning enables transmission of rich content with a light data

transfer protocol to mobiles. It can also transmit multimedia

greetings and magazines for browsing on the mobiles.

Game based learning

m-learning enables students to learn with games – a highly popular

and innovative means of learning.

Class-room management in m-learning

Mobile devices in the classroom can be used to enhance group

collaboration among students through communication applications,

interactive displays and video features.

Existing mobile technology can replace cumbersome resources

such as textbooks, visual ads and presentation technology.

Interactive and multi mode technology allows students to engage

and manipulate information.

Mobile device features with WIFi capabilities allow for on-demand

access to information.

Access to classroom activities and information on mobile devices

provides a continuum for learning inside and outside the

classroom.

Improving levels of literacy, numeracy and participation in

education amongst young adults.

Using the communication features of a mobile phone as part of a

larger learning activity.

Eg: Sending media or texts into a central portfolio, exporting

audio files from a learning platform to your phone.

Developing workforce skills and readiness among youth and young

adults.

The value of mobile learning

Teachers who have used m-learning programs and techniques have

made the following value statements in favour of m-learning.

It is important to bring new technology in classroom.

Devices used are more lightweight than books and PCs.

Mobile learning can be useful add-on tool for students with special

needs. However, for SMs and MMs this might be dependent on the

students specific disabilities or difficulties involved.

Benefits

o Relatively inexpensive opportunities, as the cost of mobile devices

are significantly less than PCs and laptops.

o Multimedia content delivery and creation options.

o Continuous and situated learning supports.

o Decrease in training cost

o Give more learning experience.

M-leaning in Mathematics

Today many kind of Android math applications are available.

1) Einstein Math Academy: Playing the game is easy, but

mastering it is hard due to the cleverly crafted scoring system.

Make strategical decisions and improve skills to plan.

2) Math workout: Math/Maths workout is a set of daily brain

training exercise and math drills designed to enhance mental

arithmetic.

3) Brain exerciser : “Fun challenging and gives your brain a little

needed exercise”

4) Mental math free: “Learn some secrets of mental math and

become good with numbers. Practice makes perfect let’s enjoy

mental math and train your brain.

5) Falling math: “simple but challenging, falling math is one of the

best math games on the Android market”.

CONCLUSION

As mobile devices are gradually converging into individual

information centers. Mobile learning become a viable learning channel

that would fit the living style of today. Mobile devices as a pervasive

medium that may assist us in combining work, study and leisure time in

meaningful ways.

Mobile learning is very useful in teachers. If facilitates creation of

curriculum based trails and allow authentic learning to take place. It

enable sharing of traits and reduce duplication of efforts. In students m-

learning enable inquiry based learning, collaborative learning and self

directed learning.
