TRIUMPH GALLERIA

FROM CHIEF EDITOR

Life renders us with ample opportunities to stay in vogue!

In the past recent years, I have observed that our young minds believe that living in trend is……Maverick. Eye

dialect is a prominent, remarkable adaptation amongst the youth, in this era of social media. Eye dialect consists of

words and groups of words spelled in a manner which to the eye is recognizably nonstandard but to the ear, it still

indicates a pronunciation. In other words, eye dialect is the use of nonstandard spelling for speech to draw atten-

tion to an ironically standard pronunciation. The term was coined by a linguist, Prof. George P. Krapp to refer to

the literary technique of using nonstandard spelling that implies a pronunciation of the given word that is actually

standard, such as wuz as was, fella for fellow, wimmin for women, lissen for listen, enuff for enough.

I know that such “texting language” has become quite ubiquitous, has taken a life of its own and is frequently be-

ing used outside of its original context. At times, it was the subject of vigorous debate and its potentially detrimen-

tal effect on literary by the advent of alphabetic keyboards on smart phones, but with the time, surrounding contro-

versies receded. As an exemplary note, I suggest my readers to avoid the use of Eye dialect being almost dyslogistic

and condescending.
