What are you focusing on during this crisis?
Where is your mind taking you now?
Set your intention on Shabbat peace!
Set your mind on freedom!
Woke Up This Morning Based on a Gospel Song, written by Rev. Robert Wesby of Aurora, Illinois
in the Hinds County jail during the Freedom Rides.
I woke up this mornin' with my mind
My mind, it was stayed on freedom
I woke up this mornin' with my mind
My mind, it was stayed on freedom
I woke up this mornin' with my mind
My mind, it was stayed on freedom
Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah
Walkin' and talkin' with my mind
My mind it was stayed on freedom
I was walkin' and talkin' with my mind
My mind, it was stayed on freedom
I was walkin', I was talkin', talkin' with my mind
My mind, it was stayed on freedom
Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah
Thinkin' and movin' with my mind
My mind, it was stayed on freedom
Oh, thinkin' and movin' with your mind
My mind, it was stayed on freedom
Thinkin' and movin' with my mind
My mind, it was stayed on freedom
Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah

6 Please remain standing for Barechu
Barechu – Call to Communal Prayer (said facing the ark)
Bar’khu et adonai ham’vorakh.
Barukh adonai ham’vorakh l’olam va-ed.
Barukh adonai ham’vorakh l’olam va-ed.
Let us bless Adonai, blessed Source of all blessing forever.
Ahavat Olam – Eternal Love
A translation of the traditional prayer, set to the traditional tune, follows:
Eternal love for Israel, You, our God, have shown. Torah and mitzvot, devotion and law, You taught us
richly and well. Therefore, dear God, Adonai, when we lie down and when we rise up, we will discuss Your
laws. And we will delight in Your guidance, given to us through Your Torah, forever and all time. For they
are our life and the length of our days, our life and the length of our days. And we shall meditate upon
them, think of them morning and night. Never remove your love, we ask you: Blessed are You, Adonai, who
loves Your people Yisrael.

Hashkiveynu/Lay Us Down (Mishkan T’filah translation)
Grant, O God, that we lie down in peace, and raise us up, our Guardian, to life renewed. Spread over us the shelter of Your
peace. Guide us with Your good counsel; for Your Name’s sake, be our help. Shield and shelter us beneath the shadow of Your
wings. Defend us against enemies, illness, war, famine and sorrow. Distance us from wrongdoing. For You, God, watch over
us and deliver us. For You, God, are gracious and merciful. Guard our going and coming, to life and to peace evermore.

This is Moses’ simple and heartfelt prayer for Miriam in (Numbers 12:13). The entire community waits for her to be healed from her
contagious disease before they move, bringing her with them.

Heal our bodies, open our hearts, awaken our minds, Eheyeh [a name of God – “I Will Be”].

The Shape and Nature of Freedom
Rabbi: Egypt in Hebrew is called ים literally, the place of double narrowness. It was so named for – מצר
geographical and spiritual reasons. Two narrow strips of fertile soil border the Nile on either side;
therefore, double narrowness is a literal observation about the physical terrain.
Cantor: Ancient Egypt was also a place of metaphysical constriction for the Hebrews and for their
taskmasters. The experience of slavery in Egypt stifled the Hebrews spiritually, even as it crushed them
physically.
Rabbi: In the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “We are the descendants of slaves … we are the
heirs of a past of rope, fire, and murder. I for one am not ashamed of this past. My shame is for those who
became so inhuman that they could inflict this torture upon us.”
Cantor: The ancient Egyptians, caught in a web of their own making, were stifled and squeezed – morally
and spiritually. Pharaoh’s Egypt was narrow, twice narrow, twice again narrow.
ALL on mute with the Rabbi: Therefore, whenever we pray about the Exodus, we pray to leave narrowness behind. We seek to manifest the fullness of freedom, the expansiveness of equality.
Cantor: As Rev King taught, "A man hasn't started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his
existence to the broader concerns of all humanity."
ALL on mute with the Rabbi: May each of us grow to know true freedom. Amen.

Amidah - Silent Meditation on Freedom
1. Now that your freedom of movement has been constrained, what new empathy
and effort might you have for: people who have disabilities or chronic conditions
that limit their mobility – hospital patients – prisoners – asylum seekers now
detained – and, especially in light of Passover, the 40 million people still enslaved
around the world.
Ask: What do I owe them? What can I offer them? How can I raise these issues at
my Seders?
2. What do you want or need to be free from?
3. What do you need freedom for?
Fill in this blank: I seek greater personal freedom in order to _________.
4. Ask: How can I help others (close to me or far away) to become more free?
5. How do you understand and respond to: “Love the stranger, for you were a
stranger in the land of Egypt”?
6. Look closely at the photograph and book title. Consider their meaning in
terms of your Jewish values and our Festival of Freedom.

And the heaven and the earth were finished, and all their hosts.
On the seventh day God finished the work which God had made; and God rested on the seventh day from all the work
which God had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because on it, God rested from all the work which God in creating had
made.
