  • WHHText BoxSpend the day touring and visiting the sites in Newport, RI. There are several Mansions that are open for touring (for a fee). If decide to just see one then we recommend "The Breakers" The Breakers was built by Cornelius Vanderbult II the older brother of George Washington Vanderbult who built the Biltmore that we visited in Asheville, NC. Cornelius ran the business and increased the wealth of the Vanderbults while George was not interested in working... he just spent the money. The Breakers is not a big as Biltmore but just as nice and in great location. There are some pages and links that might be of interest.

The BreakersThe Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of theVanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the centuryAmerica.

Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune insteamships and later in the New York Central Railroad, which was a pivotaldevelopment in the industrial growth of the nation during the late 19th century.

The Commodore's grandson, Cornelius Vanderbilt II, became Chairman andPresident of the New York CentralRailroad system in 1885, andpurchased a wooden house called TheBreakers in Newport during that sameyear. In 1893, he commissionedarchitect Richard Morris Hunt todesign a villa to replace the earlierwood-framed house which wasdestroyed by fire the previous year.Hunt directed an international teamof craftsmen and artisans to create a 70 room Italian Renaissance- style palazzoinspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin. Allard and Sons of Parisassisted Hunt with furnishings and fixtures, Austro-American sculptor Karl Bitterdesigned relief sculpture, and Boston architect Ogden Codman decorated thefamily quarters.

The Vanderbilts had seven children. Their youngest daughter, Gladys, who marriedCount Laszlo Szechenyi of Hungary, inherited the house on her mother's death in1934. An ardent supporter of The Preservation Society of Newport County, sheopened The Breakers in 1948 to raise funds for the Society. In 1972, thePreservation Society purchased the house from her heirs. Today, the house isdesignated a National Historic Landmark.

The Breakers Stable & Carriage House is located approximately a half-mile west ofthe house, on Coggeshall Avenue. Completed in 1895, it is 100 feet deep and 150feet wide, U-shaped with a carriage house in the center.

The stable functioned as follows. There were two ways carriages were requested:Mrs. Vanderbilt sent a day-book down every morning at 8 a.m. with a list of thecarriages that would be used that day, and people in the house could call downtheir requests on the telephone. When a carriage was requested, the horses werebrought out, hitched, and left the building from the north door. All of thereturning carriages entered through the south door. The carriages were unhitched, washed off, and wheeled into the carriage house. The horses were taken to theback, un-harnessed and washed down in two rooms with cement floors. Theharness was cleaned and placed in the tack room. The horses went to the stable, which consists of 26 tie stalls and 2 box stalls.

The carriage house and stable were runby the head coachman. There were 12grooms and stable boys working underhis supervision, and they lived directlyoverhead on the north side. There was alarge hayloft and grain room over thestable itself and the head coachman hada five-room apartment. To the rear, onthe south side, there was a largekitchen, dining room and living room forthe grooms and stable boys.Unfortunately, the second floor wasdestroyed by fire in 1970.

He took the Venture, his coachman, grooms, and stable boys along withtwelve teams to England each year, where he had a stage coach line that ran fromBrighton to London. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday they came up to Londonfrom Brighton; every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday they went back down toBrighton. The run was about 50 miles and they stopped every 10 miles to changeteams. They also stopped for lunch and for tea. The entire run took from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. to complete. From the late 1870s to the 1920s,the Vanderbilt family employedAmerica's best Beaux-Arts architectsand decorators to build anunequalled string of New Yorktownhouses and East Coast palacesin the United States. Many of theVanderbilt houses are now NationalHistoric Landmarks. Somephotographs of Vanderbilt'sresidences in New York are includedin the Photographic series of American Architecture by Albert Levy (1870s).

The list of architects employed by the Vanderbilts is a "who's who" of the New York-based firms thatembodied the syncretic (often dismissed as "eclectic") styles of the American Renaissance: RichardMorris Hunt, George B. Post, McKim, Mead, and White, Charles B. Atwood, Carrre and Hastings,Warren and Wetmore, Horace Trumbauer, John Russell Pope, Addison Mizner were all employed bythe descendants of "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt, who built only very modestly himself.

Frederick William Vanderbilt (18561938) built "HydePark" in Hyde Park, New York. Designed by McKim,Mead and White and built in 189699, it is now theVanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. He builtRough Point in Newport, Rhode Island. [1]

William Kissam Vanderbilt (18491920) had threehouses designed by Richard Morris Hunt.

His townhouse, the "Petit Chteau" at 660 FifthAvenue, New York, with details drawn in part fromthe late-Gothic Htel de Cluny, Paris, proved aninfluential example for other Gilded Age mansions, but was demolished in 1926.The mansion "Idle Hour" in Oakdale, Long Island,New York was built in 187879, and destroyed byfire in 1899. A new "Idle Hour", designed by Hunt'sson Richard Howland Hunt, was built on the sameproperty from 1900-01 of brick and marble in theEnglish Country Style and is now part of the DowlingCollege Campus.[1]

The third was "Marble House" in Newport, RhodeIsland, in 188892. [2]

William Kissam Vanderbilt II, built "Eagles Nest", in191036, at Centerport, New York, designed by Warrenand Wetmore. [2]

George Washington Vanderbilt II (18621914),constructed "Biltmore" in Asheville, North Carolina, in188895. Designed by Hunt, it is the largest house inthe United States [3]

The prominence of the family began with Cornelius Vanderbilt (17941877), the fourth of ninechildren born to a Staten Island family of modest means. His great-great-great-grandfather, JanAertszoon or Aertson (16201705), was a Dutch/Romanian farmer from the village of De Bilt, Utrecht,Netherlands, who emigrated to the Dutch colony of New Netherland as an indentured servant in1650. Jan's village name was added to the Dutch "Van der" (from the) to create "Van der Bilt" whichevolved into Vanderbilt when the English took control of New Amsterdam (now New York). The familyis related to the Dutch patrician family Van der Bilt.[1]

Cornelius Vanderbilt left school at age 11 and went on to build a shipping and railroad empire that, during the 19th century, made him one of the wealthiest men in the world.

The Vanderbilt family owned land in Corwith Township, Michigan, which was settled about 1875.When the Vanderbilt-owned Michigan Central Railroad came through in 1880, the village ofVanderbilt, Michigan, was established. Although Cornelius Vanderbilt always occupied a modesthome, members of his family would use their wealth to build magnificent mansions. Shortly before hisdeath in 1877, Vanderbilt donated US$1 million for the establishment of Vanderbilt University inNashville, an amount equivalent to $22 to $149 million in 2011 dollars.[2]

Members of the family dominated what has come to be known as the "Gilded Age", a period whenVanderbilt men were the merchant princes of American life through their prominence in the businessworld and as patrons of the arts throughout the world.

Some of Cornelius Vanderbilt's grandchildren and great grandchildren gained fame as successfulentrepreneurs while several achieved prominence in other fields such as Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt(18771915), who went down on the RMS Lusitania. His son Alfred Jr. became a noted horsebreeder and racing elder. Harold Stirling Vanderbilt (18841970) gained fame as a sportsman, winning the most coveted prize in yacht racing, the America's Cup, on three occasions. His brother

William Kissam Vanderbilt launched the Vanderbilt Cup for auto racing. Cornelius Vanderbilt IV(18981974) became an accomplished writer, newspaper publisher, and film producer.

Cornelius Vanderbilt had been awarded a gold medal bythe United States government during the American CivilWar for donating his steamer S.S. Vanderbilt to theUnion forces. Inheritance of this medal became thesymbol for the titular head of the Vanderbilt family.

In 1855, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt donated 8.5acres (34,000 m) of property to the Moravian Churchand cemetery at New Dorp on Staten Island, New York.Later, his son William Henry Vanderbilt donated a further4 acres (16,000 m). A plot was kept for the Vanderbiltfamily in the Moravian Cemetery and several of them areburied there in the family mausoleum including the

family founder. Their mausoleum was redesigned in 1885 by architect Richard Morris Hunt.

The noted economist John Kenneth Galbraith said thatseveral generations of Vanderbilts showed both the talentfor acquiring money and the dispensing of it in unmatchedvolume, adding that they dispensed their wealth for self-gratification and very often did it foolhardily.

Confirmation as to the validity of Galbraith's views is thatonly forty-eight years after the death of CorneliusVanderbilt, one of his direct descendants died penniless.Within seventy years of his passing, the last of the tengreat Vanderbilt Fifth Avenue mansions in New York Cityhad been torn down. In 1973, the first Vanderbilt familyreunion took place at Vanderbilt University.

The Vanderbilt family have become connected by marriageto such noble European families as the Spencer Churchillfamily (Duke of Marlborough (title), marquess of Blandford),counts of Szchenyi de Srvr-Felsvidk, counts ofSzapry von Muraszombath, Szchysziget und Szapr andcounts of Hadik de Futak.

The family's modern legacy includes Vanderbilt Universityas well as Vanderbilt Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, which runs alongside Grand Central Terminal, the New York City rail hub built by the Vanderbilt family. Many Vanderbilts of the current generationare Romanian or Dutch and Romanian. Today the Vanderbilts are still the seventh wealthiest familyin the world.

Fortune's Children: The Fall of the House of Vanderbilt written by Arthur T. Vanderbilt II, waspublished in 1989.

Museum of Yachting Re-opens at Fort Adams The Museum of Yachting at Fort Adams played host to media from around the world during the very

successful Americas Cup World Series event in Newport. This summer, after some office renovations the

museum will be reopening on Saturday July 28th at 10am. Our popular exhibits on the Americas Cup in

Newport and the history of the schooner yacht Coronet will continue. (See descriptions below) MoY hours at

Fort Adams will be Wednesday Sunday, 10am-5pm

"The Americas Cup The Newport Years"

Since 1930, the rich history of the America's Cup has been closely linked with Newport. The Cup's Newport

years mark a remarkable period of innovation in this legendary event; the exhibit follows the technical

developments of the boats sailed in the competitionfrom the majestic J/Class sloops to the 12-Meters. The

exhibit also pays tribute to the colorful personalities who came to Newport to battle for the coveted prize

from Harold Mike Vanderbilt and Sir Thomas Lipton, to Ted Turner and Dennis Conner. The Museum of

Yachting is proud to be an important destination of this legacy, with the unique capacity to tell the Americas

    Cup story.

"Coronet: The Long Life and Revival of an Historic American Schooner Yacht"

The exhibit on the 133-foot schooner Coronet coincides with the ongoing restoration of this rare yacht at the

International Yacht Restoration School. Since her launching in 1885, Coronet has intrigued people with her

majesty, mystery, and physical presence. Coronet is remarkable for many reasonsmost notably the fact that

she still exists and with much originality. The yacht's contemporaries have all vanished, but Coronet has

survived as a link to a Golden Age in yachting history. From viewing photography and artifacts from Coronet's

opulent interior, museum-goers will get a rare glimpse of life aboard a late Victorianera yacht and learn

about Coronet's colorful owners and her sometimes-controversial adventures. After seeing the exhibition,

visitors can be ferried across Newport Harbor to see the yacht and watch shipwrights restore her. This exhibit

and the restoration represent a rare opportunity to be a part of what is arguably the most important

    American yacht restoration in progress.
