Last weeks Results: NEAFL - BMFC 13.7.85 were defeated by Ainslie 12.19.91 The cock of the North trophy was once again up for grabs as arch rivals Ainslie and Belconnen battled it out at the Magpies first home game of the year at Manuka oval. The pre-game speech from club stalwart Scott Reid had the boys fired up and the Magpies came out ready to contest the footy and Ainslie weren’t backing down. The first term saw in-form midfielder Matthew Sharp finding a lot of the ball and hitting up Shane Harris who was as dangerous as ever down forward. The footy was hot and the game was looking like it would be a great battle with Belconnen leading 2 points at the first break. The old cliché of “you have to play four quarters” has been haunting the Magpies lately with small lapses in concentration allowing teams to kick away. Unfortunately there was a 15 minute gap in this quarter where Ainslie were first to the footy and as a result getting more supply to keep our undersized backline under fire. Battled and bruised Mal Douglas fought well down back and was supported well by Scott Henning and the round 5 rising star Chris Jansen who is playing fantastic football for a 16 year old. The tri-colours opened up a handy lead going into the main break and led the Magpies by 25 points. The third term was a big positive for the Magpies as they clawed their way back into the game. Cameron Campbell was doing a great defensive role on Nick Paine while the likes of Sharp, Ryan Turnbull and Sam Rutland were winning the contested ball. Brendan Dess had his second big shut down role in as many weeks on Marcus Crook and to quote president Daryl Read “Crook won’t need a shower after the game as Dess has given him a bath” shows that Dess did a stellar job. Lead up forward Matt Hammond returned from injury and was presenting well and the deep forwards of Harris and coach Matt Lokan saw the boys kick 5 goals to 2 in the quarter and be within 10 points heading into the final term. The rivalry lived up to its reputation in the last quarter with the contests all over the ground being very physical with both teams showing intent to win the game. Ainslie kicked the first two of the quarter and looked like they would run away with it however the Magpies weren’t going down without a fight. Some great forward pressure from Dom Bunyan and first use from the centre saw the boys get the margin back to one single point with 3 minutes to play. As has been the case this year so far though, the fairy-tale wasn’t to be with Ainslie kicking a sealer and winning by 6 points. These two teams meet once more this year and it is set to be a ripper game with Belconnen wanting revenge. Best players for the day were Sharp, Campbell, Dess, Hammond, Jansen and Turnbull. Goal kickers were: Harris 5, Bunyan 2, Lokan 2, Dess 2, Nick Collins 1, Hammond 1. Division 1 - BMFC 22.10.142 defeated Tuggeranong 11.5.71 It was back to Greenway oval for the Belconnen Div 1 side on Sunday to take on the Tuggeranong Hawks. The Div 1 side were attempting to extend their unbeaten start to the season to 5 games, and after a scare in the second quarter came away with a pleasing 12 goal win. Belconnen started the game kicking to the city end and were aided by a strong breeze. The boys used the advantage well and were able to convert some strong midfield play into 5 first quarter goals. Justin Hodder was providing a lot of drive in the middle and Daniel Posch was proving to be a very big target up forward, kicking 2 first quarter goals. Dom Duncan took on all comers on the wing, cutting a scythe through the Hawks midfield and helping Belconnen to dominate the first quarter. To the Tuggeranong Hawks credit they pushed well into the wind and were able to kick two goals into the breeze. Some inaccurate kicking in front of goals meant that Belconnen went to the break leading 5 goals 4 behinds to 2 goals straight. The misses late in the quarter, and losing Daniel Posch for the game to a knee injury, were to prove costly as the Hawks came out firing in the second quarter. The Hawks midfield got on top and they were using the breeze well to get the ball into their forwards very quickly. Despite some resolute defence from Jarrod Hill, and some early touches for first gamer Rhys Healy, the Hawks quickly closed the gap, kicking 4 unanswered goals. Some clever forward play from Adam McDonald and strong marking from Reuben Towill helped Belconnen to stem the flow, resulting in two late goals and a 15 point lead to Belconnen at half time. The Belconnen team came out after half time determined to use the ball more effectively and move it quickly into their forward line. These half time resolutions appeared, at first, to amount to little as the Hawks kicked the first goal of the quarter, into the wind. But from then on it was all Belconnen. With Jordy Pearson running rampant in the forward fifty, strong marking from Logan Austin, first class crumbing from Stephen Miekle and clever midfield play from Chris Calvert, Andrew Gatenby and Joss Whitford, Belconnen piled on 9 unanswered goals, taking the game out of the Hawks reach. The last quarter began with Tuggeranong facing a 65 point deficit, which was not helped at all by Belconnen kicking the first goal of the term. Belconnen had clearly steeled themselves for the last quarter, with the midfield playing much tighter and the miserly back 6, led by Kieran Ferns and Whits, and ably supported by Mitch Mooney, cutting of every Tuggeranong forward entry. A highlight of the game came in the middle of the quarter when irregular goal sneak, Kieran Ferns, snuck forward to kick his first goal of the season. When the final siren sounded the Belconnen boys had extended their lead to run out eventual winners .

Division 2 - BMFC 12.8.80 defeated Harman 10.9 .69 Belconnen showed up for their first Sunday game of the season to a sunny day at RMC oval expecting a tough hit out against the reigning premiers from the previous season. As was expected the game was physical right from the beginning with the contests around the stoppages in the midfield requiring the like of Michael Coate, Kris Archibald and Mark Braybrook to simply get the ball on the boot and get it forward early. The magpies were able to dominate the football for most of the 1st quarter however they found it tough moving forward with a determined Harman backline continually preventing them from scoring a major, the pies went in to the first change only a head by 10 points despite their early dominance as they were unable to capitalise on their early opportunities. Harman fought their way back into the game in the second term outscoring the magpies who managed to hold on through some bitter defence lead by Vineel Dutt and Sam Danaher to go to half time still a head by just 2 points. The third quarter again featured a fast start from Belconnen who manage to score some quick goals through Luke Rhodes and Ian Andrews however once again Harman found a way back into the game with a late burst of scoring going into the final break just 1 goal behind the Magpies. The last quarter was another seesawing 25 minutes this time with Harman taking the advantage as things became more physical, finally taking the lead from Belconnen after trailing all game and even managing to go ahead by 7 points. Belconnen would not go quietly however and 2 quick goals saw them back in front and after Tom Davey kicked true running into an open goal the game was sealed. The magpies running out 11 point winners. Division 3 - BMFC 14.8.92 defeated Harman 9.4.58 The BMFC Division 3 took on Harman Hogs in Round 3. Due to the Navy cracking down on civilians entering their base, Harman now have to play their home games at RMC Oval. The oval had not been mown and was full of potholes but that was not going to be an excuse the Magpies would wear. The day marked to debut of Matt Irons, James McLellan and Rob Withers to the club. It also saw Gav McKinnon, Elliot Duncan and Michael Cain make their return this year. Harman were expected to be another tough game but after last week the Magpies were quietly confident. The Magpies came out firing with a goal in the first couple of minutes to Mitch Simpson and this set the scene for the day. Not even injuries to key players in Paul Netting and Ben Langham seem to slow the Magpies down. The Magpies discipline was once again a highlight and their pressure around the ground was unrelenting. Harman fought back a number of times during the game but couldn't get any closer than two goals all game. The Magpies never seem to be threaten at any stage and always had the game in control. A good third quarter performance lead by Foster, Knight and Markham and with two quick goals to Blackburn and Irons in the last all but destroyed the Hogs spirit. The Magpies lead at every change and finished off strong to run out comfortable winners. Nathan Blackburn had a breakout game on the wing, while Gav McKinnon and Troy Levier were true soldiers in the midfield. Puddles seem to relish the new challenge as the backup ruckman, while Andrew Knight, Mick Heather and Tim Bruen were awesome down back. Michael Talevich and Mitch Simpson always seem to able to finish off when it counted. Magpies by 34 points. Goals: 4: Talevich 2: Irons, Levier, Simpson 1: Blackburn, Doolan Markham, McKinnon. Best: Blackburn, McKinnon, Knight, Levier, Talevich, Foster. Women’s - BMFC

Last weeks Results: NEAFL - BMFC 7.4.46 were defeated by Queanbeyan 18.16.124 Whenever the Belconnen Magpies and Queanbeyan Tigers play each other there is certainly no love lost and the game promised to be a fierce encounter. Seeing as the day also doubled as the 2002 Belconnen Premiership reunion the Magpies were desperate to do the club proud and provide a big upset to get their season on track. The pre-game speech from ex-club champion Steve Hazelman had the boys pumped and ready to go and the first quarter saw a fantastic game of hard footy by both teams with every facet of the game being a real arm wrestle. The Magpies showed great signs all over the ground led by club stalwarts Paul Raadts and Scott Henning who were leading by example with their attack and desire to win. The first break saw a close game with the Magpies trailing by 7 points and a great feeling amongst the players. Unfortunately the feeling and desire to win the contested football were short lived by the Magpies as they well and truly took their foot off the gas. The Tigers were allowed to run free and were constantly first to the ball much to the distress of the Magpie coaching staff. Despite Matt Viney and Simon Curtis continuing their good form down back and keeping some of the league’s most damaging forwards quiet, it was an impossible task to stem the flow and Queanbeyan packed on 5 goals without Belconnen registering a score. Some soul searching was needed at the main break as the margin was out to 44 points. The third quarter was the same story with the Tigers dominating the play and putting on another six goals for the term with Belconnen managing just four scoring shots for a total of 14 points for the quarter. Stephen Coate was trying hard all over the ground as were midfielder Matt Sharp and the ever consistent Brendan Dess who won the footy and even kicked two goals for the Pies. The margin at the last break had blown out to an insurmountable lead of 67 points. There were some positive signs in the last term from the Pies as they tried to emulate the desire and attack shown in the first quarter however the margin was always going to be tough to real in. Viney, Curtis and Henning wrapped up good games with a four quarter performance and the Pies slowed the onslaught to only lose the quarter by 11 points. With a week off this week and two absolute must win games following the break, it’s now or never for the Magpies to hit their strides and play up to the level that that know they can. Best Players for the day were: Viney, Dess, Sharp, Henning, Curtis and Coate. Division 1 - BMFC 12.8.80 were defeated by Queanbeyan 18.8.116 The Division 1 side took on the Queanbeyan Tigers at Manuka oval. It was the fourth time the two teams had come up against each other in the first 8 rounds of the competition. Although Belconnen battled on gallantly, they went down, losing by 6 goals. In their previous encounter the Tigers had jumped Belconnen early kicking six goals to one in the first term. It was clear from the outset that Belconnen were not going to let this happen a second time. The first term resembled an arm wrestle with the Belconnen midfield, ably lead by some great stoppage work by Chris Calvert, were matching their more fancied Queanbeyan oppo-nents. Unfortunately for the Magpies, Queanbeyan made the most of their opportunities forward, kicking 3 goals 2 behinds for the quarter to Belconnen’s 1 goal three behinds. The second term was a completely different game. Queanbeyan got on top in the midfield winning centre clearance after centre clearance. They converted this midfield dominance to an 8 goal straight quarter. When Belconnen got the ball in their hands and forward, Belconnen first gamer Andrew Hodder was proving a real handful for the Queanbeyan backs. He was being well supported by another debutant in Kane Peeters. Belconnen simply didn’t have the ball often enough, and as a result were able to post only 3 goals 2 behinds for the quarter. Belconnen took the opportunity of the long break to reflect on the things they were not doing well. They came out in the third term and played much more accountable and team football. Dom Duncan was getting more of the ball and taking on the opposition. Stu Boyd rucked tirelessly and Sam Jessup provided some run off half back. Cam Burdett started to get dangerous up forward and Belconnen surged with four goals, and really started to take it up to the Tigers. A lapse in the latter half of the quarter, however, was to prove fatal, as Belconnen let the Tigers clear the ball from the centre far too easily and kick two late goals. At the final change the Tigers held a comfortable lead of 32 points. Belconnen set themselves to have a real crack in the last quarter and perhaps snatch a victory. Alas it was not to be, as Queanbeyan kicked the first goal of the term to take a 38 point lead in the opening moments. Belconnen did rally though and kicked four unanswered goals to put some worry into the minds of the Tiger’s coaching box. To the Tiger’s credit they steadied and kicking the last three goals of the game, running out winners by 6 goals. Whilst it was disappointing to lose to the Tigers Belconnen fought the game out strongly. There were several positives from the days efforts not least the continued improvement of Cam Burdett and Sam Jessup, the return to form of Chris Calvert, and the fact the Belconnen have unearthed two talented footballers in Andrew Hodder and Kane Peeters. Rising Stars - BMFC 5.5.35 were defeated by Queanbeyan 13.5.83 The BMFC Rising Stars came up against undefeated leader Queanbeyan on Saturday at Manuka Oval and were defeated by 48 points. The game started brightly for the BMFC team and they were the first team to score. Unfortunately, as has been the case a number of times this year, the pressure fell off and Queanbeyan were able to kick 5 consecutive goals to open up a 5 goal quarter time lead. Although BMFC were more competitive in the second quarter the Tigers were still able to increase their lead by a further two goals and went into the main break with a commanding lead. Bubba was able to use the halftime break to rally the troops and as a result a more competitive third quarter was produced by the BMFC as their intensity increased and the ball use improved. BMFC went on to win the third quarter on the scoreboard. The final term was also an arm wrestle with Queanbeyan kicking the final two goals of the match to go home handsome 48 point victors. BMFC had some excellent contributors on the day lead by the ever reliable Jack Steele and the rapidly improving Brendan Bloye and Daniel Duranti. Luke Wharton continued his good form and Ben Telford and Nick Kelly provided some toughness in the clinches against the bigger Queanbeyan bodies. Next week’s game against Ainslie shapes as a season defining, must win affair. No doubt the boys will be up for this challenge. Division 2 - BMFC 10.18.78 defeated Eastlake 8.10.58 The Belconnen magpies returned to Football Park, The spiritual home of what was once called Canberra Districts football, on the weekend. This was the Magpies first game at the oval since their bitter preliminary final loss the previous season and all the players were keen to put that memory behind them and get a good win at the Venue. Belconnen was coming off a disappointing showing against Ainslie and started the game with an intensity that was completely absent the week before. It took a backline player to find Belconnen’s first goal which was a bad omen for Belconnen’s game in the forward line however the Magpies gained the upper hand early in the first quarter before allowing Eastlake to claw back into the game with three quick goal to go into the first break only 1 goal behind the Magpies. The second quarter was a better term for the Magpies who stepped up their defensive pressure using the skill and run of players like Ben Turnbull and Cam Suidgeest as well as the tackling pressure of Mark Braybrook and Michael Coate in the middle. This coupled with increased discipline and following their Coaches game plan to the letter was able to all but shut down the Eastlake attack going into half time. If Belconnen thought their job was all but finished at half time they were completely surprised in the third quarter as Eastlake lifted their intensity as the Magpies dropped away. The damage was lessened on the score board by some impressive Back line games from Tim Reardon and Sam Daniher as well as some wayward kicking from the Eastlake players, the only Belconnen player able to find the goals in the third quarter being their captain as the Belconnen Forward continued to struggle to kick straight. Jacob asked the team for a better effort at three quarter time and he got what he asked for with Belconnen once again stepping up their Defensive effort, unfortunately the wayward kicking of Belconnen continued as they kicked 2 Goals 7 for the quarter, even with the wasted opportunities Belconnen finished up winning by 20 points. This week they face one of the top teams of the Competition in ADFA and will need to find a way to get their forwards kicking straight if they hope to get the Win. Division 3 - BMFC 24.6.150 defeated Ainslie 9.8.62 The BMFC Division 3 took on Ainslie as both teams were in a fight to hold on to third spot on the table. Ainslie Div 2 side had put the Magpies Div 2 side to the sword the week before and the Div 3 side had been winning well, so Ainslie as a club seem to be a much stronger than in previous years and were not to be taken lightly. Although there were another 12 changes to the Magpies team, three of those ins (Sean Egan, Paul Netting and Brendan Read) bought in over 800 games of experience.

This experience proved invaluable as the Magpies went through a real purple patch at the beginning of the game with Brendan Read and Jeremy Foster marking everything and making Ainslie pay as they kicked 7 goals between them. Great ruckwork from Todd Brazier gave midfielders Rorry Markham, Geoff Kay and Scott Reaper them the ball on a plate and gain control of the stoppages. The misery continued for Ainslie in the second quarter with the Magpies kicking another 7 goals. Although their spirit was broken, Ainslie mounted a mini comeback in the second half. For every goal Ainslie would kick, the Magpies replied immediate-ly. This comeback was snuffed out almost single-handily by five second goals by Jimmy Kenna. The Magpies were never headed and won every quarter to run out comfortable winners. Brendan Read and Jeremy Foster were almost unstoppable up forward in the first half while Jimmy Kenna finished off in the second. Rory Markham, Scott Reaper and Geoff Kay were fantastic in the midfield, while Brady Daw, Stuart Dunn and Toby Piper were awesome down back. All in all a great team effort with winners all around the ground. Magpies by 88 points. Goal Kickers: 6: Read 5: Foster, Kenna 5, 2: Reaper, G. Kay 1: K. Fennis , R. Markham , R. Withers , J. Smith. Best Players: Read, Markham, Reaper, Foster, Brazier, Kenna Women’s - BMFC 3.2.20 were defeated by Eastlake 7.8.50 The women battled it out against the reining premiers Eastlake on Saturday at Football Park. The final score does not reflect the game, with the Magpies matching Eastlake for most of the game, being only 5 points down at three quarter time. Unfortunately Eastlake came out strong in the last quarter with four quick goals resulting in the Magpies going down in the end by 30 points. All the girls fought hard. It was great to have Amy Patterson (Patto) returning from injury this week, slotting straight back into Fullback. Anna McCaskill, giving away about a foot in height to the opposing Ruck and copping several knees to the chest, still got up and fought hard. Heather Anderson and Sophie O’Dea were both absent due to youth girls Rep side commitments, however the efforts of Elise O’Dea (Junior), Kate Gillespie (Grinda), Amna Kahn, Emma McCaskill (Killer) and Jorden Irvine in the midfield were sensational. Junior played her best game this year even though heavily tagged. Again, a huge effort by all the new girls, all starting to get their hands on the ball. Well done.
