Dream OneTeam One JOURNAL THE SUMMIT SCHOOL 2016 ANNUAL BENEFIT NOVEMBER 21, 2016, THE PIERRE HOTEL, NYC

Transcript of One OneTeam Dream OneTeam - Constant...

OUR MISSION The Summit School provides children who have learning and emotional challenges the educational support they require to achieve typical academic milestones and develop their individual strengths and talents. As members of a supportive and nurturing community, our students maximize their strengths, develop self-esteem, become productive contributors to society, and go on to pursue higher education, careers, and interpersonal relationships.

CLOSE THE GAP Summit’s Annual Benefit, while a night of fun and friendship, is also a time for parents to unite and ensure our school’s and children’s success. Closing the gap is a significant issue that we must address directly since New York State’s low tuition rate does not equal Summit’s actual cost for educating our children. Lowering Summit’s standards is not an option. Together, we will help Summit maintain its commitment to excellence. We are fortunate that Summit families, past and present, make our school strong and ensure our legacy.

frequently attends meetings with school professionals on behalf of

special needs students.

Dan is a partner with the law firm Kramer Levin Naftalis &

Frankel LLP in New York City, where he specializes in insurance

law. Dan graduated Brandeis University in 1991 and attended

The University of Chicago Law School, where he and Rachel were

classmates, graduating in 1994. Dan has practiced corporate and

insurance law since that time. Dan served as chair of the Insurance

Law Committee of the NYC Bar Association from 2011 to 2014.

In addition, Dan serves as president of The Reconstructionist

Synagogue of the North Shore and on the advisory board of the

Tourette Association Center of Excellence at Northwell Hospital.

A native of Roslyn, Long Island, Rachel graduated from the State

University of New York in Albany in 1991 and The University of

Chicago Law School in 1994. Having been active in The Summit

School’s Parents’ Association since her daughter Shoshana’s arrival

at Summit in 2009, she served as president of the PA from 2013

to 2015. Rachel also has been instrumental in Summit’s Annual

Benefit and numerous other Summit events and programs. Rachel

has been very active in the Long Island chapter of the Tourette

Association of America, where she has served on the Board

for eleven years and is currently Treasurer. In that capacity, she

has been an advocate for families affected by Tourette and its

associated disorders. An expert in special education law, Rachel

Rachel and Dan have lived in Port Washington, Long Island, for

nineteen years, where they raised Erica, Brian, Shoshana, and

Benjamin. Erica is a 2016 graduate of SUNY’s Fashion Institute

of Technology’s jewelry program. Brian works in contracting and

is studying business at Nassau Community College, and he also

manages lighting and sound for community theaters. Shoshana,

a Summit graduate in the Class of 2015, is a sophomore at FIT’s

film program, and Ben is in 10th grade at Summit.

The Summit School has provided a supportive educational

environment for both Shoshana and Ben that has helped their

individual strengths and talents flourish. At Summit, Shoshana

served as a high school peer mentor, was inducted into the

National Honor Society in 2014, and always enjoyed writing

scripts and participating in school video productions. In Summit’s

Work-Based Learning Program for two years, she worked at the

Museum of Natural History as a volunteer educator and as an

audio/visual archivist in their media department. Like her parents,

Shoshana is an empathetic person who seeks to help others,

working as a youth ambassador for the Tourette Association

and being an active mental illness advocate. While not currently

acting, her brother Ben was a child performer and was featured

in commercials. He, too, works as a youth ambassador for

the Tourette Association and attends the annual meeting in

Washington, D.C., with Shoshana. His interest in television and

theatre led him to participate as a stagehand at a local theater,

and as a student in Summit’s Work-Based Learning Program, he

is exploring career potentials as a social media analyst working at

a major cable network in New York City. Ben has said often that

he is looking forward to growing at Summit, and Rachel and Dan

know in their hearts that he will.
