#1 - The Swan Princess (1994, Nest Family Entertainment/Rich Animation Studios)“From Odette’s tomboy antics in the opening song, to John Cleese’s turn as a drawlingly French frog (who wrongly assumes he’s just a kiss from princehood), to the bonkers Drop Dead Gorgeous-style themed princess costumes during the dance number at the final ball - there is not a single thing wrong with this movie. Far longer than forever, it will be my favorite.” Bustle.com - News/Entertainment/Fashion & Beauty/Lifestyle
The Swan Princess is ranked as the #1 Non-Disney animated film of the 80’s & 90’s.
“It has some very funny scenes and lines. The two scenes that stand out for me is when the Prince is practicing his marksmanship with painted arrows and the targets are musicians
dressed up as animals.”

The Swan Princess wins critical acclaim! Decisively filling a void in the family entertainment marketplace, Richard Rich’s “the Swan Princess” arrives Friday in a feature-length cartoon that seeks to do far more than just reinforce the status quo.
The ‘Swan Lake’ derived story is no more complex than that, but rich characterizations keep interest high and respect the audience’s intelligence at all turns. The boy-girl relationship is portrayed from childhood into young adulthood, ranging from a competitive comradery, to romance, to the princess’ rejection of the prince after he declares the he loves her mostly for her good looks.Jack Palance mingles menace and self-aware comical touches in the bad-guy role, proving himself as naturally suited to the cartoon milieu as he has been to tough-guy roles since the 1950’s. The other character voices are vividly realized, only the musical score
is inconsistent, with forgettable tunes outnumbering the more substantial ones.As its title suggests, “The Swan Princess” also takes pains to address the audience of young girls ‘who customarily find little room to escape the domestic stereotypes and passive romantic longings to relate to its films from the top-dog studio Disney.‘Swan’ is no Disney film, but rather a breakout offering from Nest Entertainment. Many Disney defectors, including Rich, populate the new studio, the Mouse Factory’s stylistic influence is obvious, but “The Swan Princess” is its own movie, with its own agenda – which does not include the paternistic patronizing values that
compromise the appeal of even the better Disney’s.And besides, any film that features a cartoon version of Jack Palance doing one-armed pushups is bound to be a keeper.
Palance supplies the voice of the villain, a magician who longs to marry a princess (Michelle Nicastro) so as to gain control of her father’s kingdom. Failing at this, Palance transforms the young woman into a swan. She finds unexpected allies in a frog (John Cleese), a turtle (Stephen Wright) and a Puffin (Steve Vinovich), who seek to restore the princess’ humanity and arrange her reunion with a royal suitor (Howard McCallion).

R E V I E WThe Swan PrincessScreenplay by Brian Nissen. Produced by Richard Rich, Terry noss and Tom Tobin. Directed by Richard Rich. A New Line Cinema release. Rated G, 80 minutes.Featuring the voices of John Cleese, Jack Palance, Sandy Duncan and Steven Wright.
Earlier this year, there was Disney’s “The Lion King,” which is back in theaters for a second run. Now there is new Line Cinema’s “The Swan Princess” and, if you ask me, the latter is far the better of the two.Produced and directed by Richard Rich, a Disney veteran, “The Swan Princess” is a beautifully animated romantic tale about a mad sorcerer named Rothbart (the voice of Jack Palance) who transforms the statuesque Princess Odette (Michelle Nicastro) into a swan to foil her marriage to Prince Derek (Howard McGillin), her dashing childhood sweetheart. It’s a story of an evil usurper trying to claim the kingdom for himself, which makes the film at least superficially similar to Disney’s African epic. But its tone couldn’t be more different. Child or adult, you can watch it without feeling that you’ve had a shopping mall erected in your brain.
As lovers, Odette and Derek, who have been “intended” for one another since infancy, are a cut above the bland pair in “Beauty and the Beast.” Even so, the course of true romance does not run smoothly, just as they are about to announce their engagement, Derek tells his beloved that she is beautiful, to which she replies, “What else?” Poor Dope that he is, Derek answers: “What else is there?”Immediately, the wedding is called off, giving Rothbart room to launch his vile scheme.Transformed, the swan Odette is exiled to an enchanted forest, where she is befriended by a couple of lakeside wildlife knuckleheads. The first is a frog named Jean-Bob – get it? A frog who’s French – who is under the impression that he, too, is a royal person trapped in an animal’s body. The estimable John Cleese brings him to
life with an accent that makes Inspector Clouseau look like a Berlitz valedictorian.Jean-Bob’s best pal is a turtle names Speed. Of course, the handle is ironic, a point underscored by the phlegmatic brilliance of comedian Steven Wright’s deadpan delivery.
Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the film is its fluid, unhurried pace. Rich and his team aren’t interested in roller-coaster effects of sledgehammer manipulations. They have a lush, original sense of color, even a flair for the poetic. The score – by lyricist David Zippel and composer Les de Azevedo – isn’t terribly distinctive (it’s probably the movie’s weakest link), but there is a merciful absence of the hard sell in that area as well.In the past, the Disney studios, for all their bullying and gargantuanism, have held a complete lock on feature animation. They were it. Now it seems, they’ve got talented company.

It’s tough to compete with Disney in the field
of animation. But that’s exactly what Rich
Animation Studios and Nest Entertainment
are attempting with “The Swan Princess.”
A feature-length film shot in the style of
animated classics, “the Swan Princess”
reportedly cost $35 millino. If so, it
was money well spent. The film looks
beautiful, and it will no doubt be popular
with the youngsters (especially once the
merchandising assault begins).
Nearly every image is hand drawn and hand
painted according to traditional animation
techniques. The lush backgrounds in
hundreds of different colors lend a dreamy,
impressionistic look to this charming tale of
courage and faith.
This is the love story fo Prince Derek and
Princess Odette. Deemed a perfect royal
match by their parents, Queen Uberta and
King William, Derek and Odette are forced
to spend summers together in the hope that
they wi8ll fall in love, marry and unite the
two kingdoms. Sort of a romance with a side
fo politics.
As children, Derek and Odette develop an
instant dislike for each otehrh. Eventually,
they fall in love and plan to marry, or
soiit seems untils Derek commits tna
unpardonable sin. It seems his love for
Odette is basen on her beauty alone. After
all, he says, “What else is there?” For Odette
– who wants to be valued for her mind and
her character – it is not enough. She rejecte
his proposal as unworthy and leaves the
kingdom with her father.
On the way home, they are attacked by
the evil Rothbart, banished by the king
yers earlier for conspiring to take over the
kingdom. Rushing to their rescue, Derek
finds king William near death and Odette
missing, kidnapped by Rothbart – disguised
as a “great animal.” Rothbart plans to force
Odette to marry him, tgiving him control
over the kingdom. When she refuses, he turns
her into a swan. It is only by night when the
moonlight hits her wings that Odette returns
to human form.
At her new home, a lake near a ruined castle,
she meets a ragtag trio: Jean-Bob, a French
frog who fancies himself a prince; a languid
turtle names Speed and a lovable Puffin.
Together they try to help the princess break
the spell and return her to her prince.
Meanwhile Queen Uberta invites all the
beautiful young princesses to a ball in hope
that Derek will choose a wife from them. Derek,
distraught over the loss of Odette, prefers to
spend his time hunting the “great animal” so
that he may rescue his true love.
Howard McGillin as the voice of Derek and
Liz Callaway (the singing Odette) duet nicely.
They possess sweet, warm voices suitable
for ballads like “Longer than Forever.” Tony
Award-winning lyricist David Zippel (“City of
Angels”) and composer Lex de Azevedo have
created pleasant enough tunes, although
there isn’t a stand-out like “Under the Sea”
(“The Little Mermaid”) or “Be Our Guest”
(“Beauty and the Beast”).
Whether “The Swan Princess” takes its place
among animated classics remains to be seen,
but as an entry into the animated film wars,
this Princess holds her own.
Princess Odette and Prince Derek try to dance around some of their
differences in the animated fantasy “The Swan Princess.”

I love the song ‘This Is My Idea,’ Odette and Derek grow up together and it’s quite funny when they come to the “This isn’t my idea.. of fun” since it usually concludes humorous scenes.

It’s a movie that every girl would enjoy seeing at least once.
I was very young when this movie came out, so I grew up watching it. I have ALWAYS loved this movie. I just barely watched it over again and I still love it!It’s still better than most Disney movies that I’ve seen (but then again, that’s just my personal opinion).
I have the VHS for this which is 16 years old and I always watch it whenever there is nothing on TV.
Can I also say, that this is one of the few animations that makes excellent use of the evil-sorcerer-back-for-revenge formula?
This movie is one
of my favorites and
considering it was
made awhile ago the
animation isn’t bad.
I mistake it for a
Disney movie a lot of
the time but who can
blame me?
The songs “Eternity” and “Far Longer than Forever” have been stuck in my head for a long time now and I love it! I give this movie 10 out of 10, it was EXCELLENT!!!
I watched this movie not too long ago and it reminded me of how much I loved it. It is a sweet movie with incredible songs and a great plot. I watched it three times in a row, and it never failed to impress me.
