Volley- ball came into play this year as an option.” Spectators, coaches and other players have taken no- tice of Galusha’s volleyball skills for two years. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter was even recruited by Parkland, which won the National Ju- nior College Athletic Associa- tion Division II title and fin- ished with a 57-0 record. Galusha’s final volleyball accomplishment is being named the Honorary Captain of The State Journal-Register All-Area Volleyball Team. Kills leader She ramped up her volley- ball game as a junior and sen- ior. Galusha led Williamsville in kills two straight years. She collected 384 kills, 337 digs and 61 aces en route to Williamsville’s Class 2A su- persectional appearance this season. All those aces surely frus- trated the competition. “She served the way she played outside hitter,” Carl- son said. “She always was just aggressive. “She’s the type of player who is in your face. She has a float jump serve, and not as many in the area do that.” Galusha takes great pride in her serving. “I always worked on differ- ent types of serves — jump floats, regular floats and jump serves — to switch things up on teams,” she said. “When they start passing up one serve I could just go to the next. It would kind of throw them off. Jump floats were my go-to.” Workout plan She started individual spe- cialized workout sessions sev- en months ago and worked on her jump mechanics to el- evate her skills. “(Enrico Roncancio) helped me greatly increase my vertical,” Galusha said. “I think I increased my vertical by three inches. I had more strength behind my hits. It helped with the speed to re- act to balls.” When Galusha goes about doing something, she’s all in. She was a firecracker on the court for the Bullets. “She’s definitely the flashiest player and she’s the loudest player on the court for us,” Carlson said. “You’re always going to hear some- thing from her. “She’s flashy, confident and aggressive. She loves getting a kill on somebody else but can’t stand it if someone gets a kill.” Galusha admits to being “very intense”. “I’m talkative,” she said. “I’m very loud. I’ll scream. I get really excited it. I get in- tense in any competition I’m in. Volleyball really brings it out, especially those big points you get so jacked.” Banner year Williamsville had lots to celebrate this season. It made it within one victory of the state tournament. The 30-5 Bullets lost 30-28, 25-19, 25- 23 in a supersectional to Bloomington Central Catholic. “Winning the sectional this year was huge,” Galusha said. “I’m so proud to be a part of that one. If I would have gone out my senior year not getting that one, I think that would have been something I’d al- ways regret especially losing sophomore and junior year. “The program is great. It’s made a name for itself.” Galusha has poured count- less hours into club teams, camps, showcases and special- ized sessions, and she plays basketball. Yet track won her over as a sophomore, so she decided to go that route. She led off Williamsville’s Class 1A state championship 4x400 relay in 2014. She owns the program record in the 800 meters and is a member of record-holding 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 re- lays. She has committed to NCAA Division II Lewis Uni- versity. She will run both track and cross country. “Track is my No. 1 sport, but everything I’ve put into volleyball I wouldn’t change anything,” Galusha said. “I’ve loved every part of it. Every- thing we accomplished here is something that I’ll remem- ber always. “I’ll probably get into intra- mural volleyball in college, or I’ll try to. They have sand vol- leyball courts, so I’ll hop on there.” — Contact Marcia Martinez: 788-1547, marcia. [email protected], twitter.com/MMartinezSJR. Williamsville’s Abbey Galusha, center, tallied 384 kills in her senior season, but she plans to pursue track and field at Division II Lewis University. WILLIAMSVILLE —Williamsville HighSchool senior Abbey

Galusha is breaking volley-ball hearts by giving up thesport to run college track.

“Track has always been hergo-to,” Williamsville volley-ball coach Stacey Carlsonsaid. “Accolades in trackstarted coming around a lotfaster than volleyball. Volley-ball came into play this yearas an option.”

Spectators, coaches andother players have taken no-tice of Galusha’s volleyballskills for two years. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter waseven recruited by Parkland, which won the National Ju-nior College Athletic Associa-tion Division II title and fin-ished with a 57-0 record.

Galusha’s final volleyballaccomplishment is beingnamed the Honorary Captainof The State Journal-RegisterAll-Area Volleyball Team.

Kills leaderShe ramped up her volley-

ball game as a junior and sen-ior. Galusha led Williamsvillein kills two straight years. Shecollected 384 kills, 337 digsand 61 aces en route toWilliamsville’s Class 2A su-persectional appearance thisseason.

All those aces surely frus-trated the competition.

“She served the way sheplayed outside hitter,” Carl-son said. “She always was justaggressive.

“She’s the type of playerwho is in your face. She has afloat jump serve, and not asmany in the area do that.”

Galusha takes great pridein her serving.

“I always worked on differ-ent types of serves — jumpfloats, regular floats and jumpserves — to switch things upon teams,” she said. “Whenthey start passing up one serveI could just go to the next. Itwould kind of throw them off.Jump floats were my go-to.”

Workout planShe started individual spe-

cialized workout sessions sev-en months ago and workedon her jump mechanics to el-evate her skills.

“(Enrico Roncancio)helped me greatly increasemy vertical,” Galusha said. “Ithink I increased my verticalby three inches. I had morestrength behind my hits. Ithelped with the speed to re-act to balls.”

When Galusha goes aboutdoing something, she’s all in.She was a firecracker on thecourt for the Bullets.

“She’s definitely theflashiest player and she’s theloudest player on the courtfor us,” Carlson said. “You’realways going to hear some-thing from her.

“She’s flashy, confident andaggressive. She loves gettinga kill on somebody else but

can’t stand it if someone getsa kill.”

Galusha admits to being“very intense”.

“I’m talkative,” she said.“I’m very loud. I’ll scream. Iget really excited it. I get in-tense in any competition I’min. Volleyball really brings itout, especially those bigpoints you get so jacked.”

Banner yearWilliamsville had lots to

celebrate this season. It madeit within one victory of thestate tournament. The 30-5Bullets lost 30-28, 25-19, 25-23 in a supersectional toBloomington CentralCatholic.

“Winning the sectional thisyear was huge,” Galusha said.“I’m so proud to be a part ofthat one. If I would have goneout my senior year not gettingthat one, I think that wouldhave been something I’d al-ways regret especially losingsophomore and junior year.

“The program is great. It’smade a name for itself.”

Galusha has poured count-less hours into club teams, camps, showcases and special-ized sessions, and she playsbasketball. Yet track won herover as a sophomore, so shedecided to go that route.

She led off Williamsville’sClass 1A state championship4x400 relay in 2014. Sheowns the program record inthe 800 meters and is amember of record-holding4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 re-lays. She has committed toNCAA Division II Lewis Uni-versity. She will run bothtrack and cross country.

“Track is my No. 1 sport, but everything I’ve put intovolleyball I wouldn’t changeanything,” Galusha said. “I’veloved every part of it. Every-thing we accomplished hereis something that I’ll remem-ber always.

“I’ll probably get into intra-mural volleyball in college, orI’ll try to. They have sand vol-leyball courts, so I’ll hop onthere.”
