SARAH HEINZ HOUSE BULLETIN November 2016 Sarah Heinz House One Heinz Street Pittsburgh, PA 15212 November 2016 Bulletin “The more you thank life, the more life gives you to be thankful for.” -Unknown As we watch the leaves fall and temperatures change, we are reminded that nature’s cycles are mirrored in our own lives. Planning efforts in the spring and summer have given way to exciting program enhancements for all to harvest and enjoy now. Although we are only a month into the program year, we already see many smiling faces exploring new things and engaging new friends. This holds true for our youth, as well as our staff and volunteers. The House is alive and vibrant! And while we will continue to benefit from our prior efforts, we must in-turn be mindful to lay the groundwork necessary to prepare ourselves and the House for a plentiful future. One necessary and all important step in this process is to give thanks. Gratitude can never be expressed too often, and we sometimes mistakenly believe that gratitude is only reserved for big things or grand occasions. I challenge you to look for the little things each day. You may find yourself thankful for the sun shining; sharing a laugh with a friend; an apology received/accepted; hitting a green light when time is of the essence; or having pumpkin spiced everything once again available at your favorite places (ok...maybe that last one is just me). The takeaway is, we should pause daily to look for and acknowledge the good around us. We all have things to be thankful for, and the Sarah Heinz House family is certainly one of them. But being thankful is only half of the success equation. Extending thanks is the other. So allow me to extend our deepest thanks to each of you for making Sarah Heinz House the unique and special place that it is. From our teen leaders to our newest preschool roboticists, we thank you for bringing laughter, energy and unbridled curiosity to our hallways. From our veteran staff and volunteers down to our rookies, we thank you for the care and compassion expressed daily. To the parents and caregivers, we thank you for the sacrifices made to ensure that your child gets to spend time at the House. To our alumni, we thank you for continuing to stand by us and looking for ways to lift up those following behind you. And to our Board, we thank you for the behind the scenes work to support and strengthen us. Like I said….there is a lot to be thankful for! As we watch the leaves fall and temperatures change, we are reminded that

nature’s cycles are mirrored in our own lives. Planning efforts in the spring and

summer have given way to exciting program enhancements for all to harvest and

enjoy now. Although we are only a month into the program year, we already see

many smiling faces exploring new things and engaging new friends. This holds

true for our youth, as well as our staff and volunteers. The House is alive and

vibrant!

And while we will continue to benefit from our prior efforts, we must in-turn

be mindful to lay the groundwork necessary to prepare ourselves and the House

for a plentiful future. One necessary and all important step in this process is to

give thanks. Gratitude can never be expressed too often, and we sometimes

occasions. I challenge you to look for the little things each day. You may find

yourself thankful for the sun shining; sharing a laugh with a friend; an apology

Member Spotlights

S’

Achante Myles has grown over the past year into one of Sarah Heinz House’s best and brightest teen members. Achante can be found in the halls of SHH almost every day serving as a positive role model for younger girls and boys. She always has a positive attitude and is eager to help out wherever she can. Achante juggles being a Keystone member, a volunteer and a part-time employee at Sarah Heinz House.

Seth Fabry (Senior) has done a phenomenal job developing into one of our strongest male leaders! This past summer, Seth did a great job as one of our Lifeguard Counselors during Day Camp. He was also chosen as our Keystone Club’s Sergeant of Arms for the 2016-2017 year! One of Seth’s greatest traits is ability to lead by his actions. No matter the event, Seth is willing and super excited to help and he always…okay usually….does it with a huge smile on his face! Great Job Seth! Keep it up!

Gold Shield Winner

We’d like to honor Adric Northam for winning the Gold Shield Drawing this month! Adric received a Gold Shield for helping clean up and setting the room up for Club. As a brand new member, we normally do not see many members take initiative so soon! Great Job Adric! Keep up the great work!
