1. PARTNER ORGANISATION OVERVIEW
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is an international agricultural research institute based in Nairobi, Kenya, and founded in 1994 by the merging of the International Livestock Centre for Africa and the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases. It is a member of the CGIAR and focuses its research on building sustainable livestock pathways out of poverty in low-income countries. ILRI works with partners worldwide to help poor people keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity and find profitable markets for their animal products. 2. ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW The Research Officer will work as part of the team across two main CGIAR
(http://www.cgiar.org/) research programs; 1) ‘Livestock Systems
(http://livestockfish.cgiar.org/) and 2) ‘Agriculture for Improved Nutrition and Health’
program (http://www.a4nh.cgiar.org/) in ILRI pork value chain sites in Vietnam. The
volunteer will work with various stakeholders in the pig value chain including universities,
research institutions, food safety authorities and private sector. The assignment will focus
on conducting research to develop, apply and test gender sensitive feasible interventions to

improve food safety along the pork value chain which takes account of understanding the
constraints, opportunities, potential incentives and cost benefits aspects. It will also involve
supporting local team members and partners in developing, delivering communication
materials and publications.
This volunteer assignment is important to ILRI Vietnam because the position holder would
help build capacity for our local partners including Department of Animal Health, NIVR,
HUPH and One Health Partnership.
3. ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES
He/she will focus on conducting research to involve in economic impact of animal and zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance / cost-benefit analysis of control strategy in Vietnam as well as other activities under an One Health approach. He/she will also involve supporting local team members and partners in developing, delivering communication materials.
To include all people directly affected by the volunteer assignment in the Partner Organisation and community using strategies that promote:
a. Gender equality b. Inclusion of Youth c. Inclusion of People with Disability (PWD) d. Child protection and child safeguarding e. Inclusion of other marginalised groups
4. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE VOLUNTEER
In consultation with their line manager and relevant stakeholders, Australian volunteers
complete an assignment plan in the first eight (8) weeks of their assignment. The duties below
are an indication of the type of work that may be involved in meeting the Assignment
Objectives:
Assist ILRI staff and partner to denvelop a framework and method for One Health economics assessment in the areas of animal and zoonosis and antimicrobial resistance related to livestock.
Conducting literature review for economic impact of animal and zoonotic diseases in Vietnam
Conduct research in the fields in collaboration with ILRI and its partners to implement the developed framework on One Health economics assessment in the areas of animal and zoonosis and antimicrobial resistance related to livestock.
Develop publications based on research results and communication materials for stakeholders.

5. SELECTION CRITERIA
Qualifications, Essential Skills & Experience
Minimum Qualification of a Bachelor Degree in Veterinary Science, Animal Science, Animal health Economic, Public Health, Life Science, or a related field
Three years of experience working in animal health economics/science, public health and life
science
Experience undertaking research in a related field
Experience in participatory approaches applied to community-based activities that involve
interaction with local stakeholders and authorities
Experience and/or knowledge of public health aspects and risk analyses including risk
communication
Ability to work independently and effectively in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural work environment
Desirable Skills & Experience
Willingness to travel for periods of time in rural areas of Vietnam building capacity of local partners (students and lecturers at Vietnam National University of Agriculture, National Institute for Animal Science and Hanoi University of Public Health) through mutual learning, mentoring and joint implementation of projects in veterinary public health
6. ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION

Staff Supervision
The volunteer will be part of the ILRI team in Vietnam consisting of six international
scientists, and five nationally recruited research support staff. An office manager and
administrative assistant provide administrative support to the team. Regular visits by ILRI
scientists and collaborators will also provide opportunities for mentoring and social
interactions that can enhance professional and personal growth at the workplace. In
addition, the volunteer will be working in close collaboration with ILRI partners from NIVR
and may from time to time work in the offices of these partners.
Hours & Days at the Partner Organisation
From 8.30 – 17:00 Monday to Friday
Leave Entitlements
All volunteers are entitled to 20 days leave per 12 months, unless otherwise advised.
Same conditions and terms as local colleagues apply, including national holidays.

Professional Indemnity Insurance
Professional indemnity insurance is required for all volunteers who are acting as a medical,
allied health or legal professional whilst on assignment. On these assignments professional
indemnity insurance must be provided by the partner organisation, Australian organisation
(if applicable) or self-arranged by the volunteer as part of ongoing professional obligations.
For all other assignments, professional indemnity insurance is not automatically provided for
Australian volunteers. You should consult your partner organisation about the need for
professional indemnity insurance for your role prior to your departure. Where required
and/or you consider it essential for you to hold this insurance, please discuss this with the
Volunteer Services Manager in Melbourne prior to your departure.
This assignment is not deemed to require professional indemnity insurance.
Other Conditions
If required to work after hours, volunteer is entitled to time off in lieu because there is no
overtime pay provisions.
ILIRI will support travel expenditures (vehicle or economic air ticket, per diem and accommodation) on business required travels to a project sites out of Hanoi city to volunteers as per ILRI’s travel policy
All written material or other material produced by volunteer as part of the volunteer
assignment will be the intellectual, industrial and copyright property of ILRI and will
not be used by volunteers in any form or for any purpose other than on behalf of ILRI
unless having the written consent of the Country Representative

Language support is provided during the in-country orientation period. Most often, additional
resources for further development later in the assignment will be available if required.
7. LIVING AS A VOLUNTEER
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is the country’s second largest city with an ever increasing population of 6.5 million people. Located in northern Vietnam, Hanoi serves as the political centre for the country. The city is a unique mix of East and West, with its tradition and modernity and its French colonial heritage and Confucian influences. The city is warm in summer and cooler in winter, with high humidity throughout the year. Hanoi is a popular tourist location, with visitors drawn to the abundance of beautiful landscapes such as lakes, boulevards, lush public parks and French architecture. It is well serviced by comprehensive public bus lines which are clean, comfortable and cheap. Although

both motorbikes and bicycles are available for rent, they are not recommended due to the challenges faced by inexperienced riders when navigating busy cities and the chaotic nature of the traffic. Cultural Tips • The official language is Vietnamese, but a wide range of other languages including English are spoken • A wide range of religions are practiced, including Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity and Islam • Crime can occur throughout the city, and scamming can occur particularly in tourist areas, so security advice should be followed • Be sensitive when discussing the country’s political history and its past conflicts
8. ALLOWANCES & SUPPORT
These allowance levels are based on the Cost of Living in the host country location. Allowances
will be reviewed periodically and may increase or decrease. Volunteers will be given notice of
any change to the allowance level.

Assistance with the identification of suitable, secure and affordable accommodation will be
provided by the In-Country Management Team.
