An African Tipping Point
• A level Playing Field
Animal Health companies (amongst
others) are looking at Africa & seeing
great opportunity
Desire to invest, but perceived
risk remains:
• Protection of IP
• Fake products
• Complex Distribution channels
• Efficiency of markets
• Technical challenges
• Ease of registration
• Counterfeit products
• Market accessibility….
• Distribution outlets - cold
chain
Product Development & supply of products to meet the specific needs of Africa. Why is progress so slow?
• Limited R&D budgets
• Need to prioritise projects
• Concern about business in Africa - but the perception is
changing
Constraints:
• Management of notifiable disease
• Vet product accreditation
• Counterfeit control
• Food security
• Food safety
• Animal welfare
• Adverse reaction reporting & investigation
The Virtuous Circle ~ how would it look?
We all have a clear part to play
• Development & registration of suitable
products for Africa
• Marketing & sale of products
• Support for private sector veterinarians
• Opportunity to establish private clinics without
concerns that NGOs or others will disturb the
market with free or heavily subsidised products
or services
• Efficient production systems
• Animal welfare
• Demand for product availability
• Efficient markets for sale

How does GALVmed fit into the picture?
We do this by:
• Intervention in all necessary links of the value chain,
including:
• Product development, registration, manufacture,
distribution, commercialisation and delivery to the end
user
• Building capacity (upstream and downstream)
• Market development and adoption by creation of
sustainable value chains
• Understanding and influencing policy to enable the
above
• Advocating for livestock as a route out of poverty
What does GALVmed do?
We make available and facilitate adoption of livestock health products for some of the 900 million people who rely on livestock for livelihood.

What can we do to enhance the virtuous circle?
An efficient system of clearly delineated roles and responsibilities which serves
everyone’s purposes better!
Goal:
Senior level forum for open discussion where all parties
come to the table but leave their pre-conceptions on the
other players outside the room – open minds.
