http://oneconferenceseoul.com/ Introduction Ancient Futures – Design and/or Happiness is a collaborative conference between the Asia Digital Art and Design Association, the Korean Society of Design Science and the Society of Design Convergence. The goal of this event is to create a forum to explore both the extent, reach and definition of design as we know it today. This year’s conference will take place from Dec.13th through Dec.14th at Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. The theme of this conference centers around the idea of happiness or contentment and its corresponding connections and intersections with design. This year’s theme drew inspiration from Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh by Helena Norberg-Hodge. Norberg-Hodge examined the community of Ladakh and the transformations that took place during modernization. Her prime observation was that with increased technology and advancement often came less overall contentment. This raises questions not only for circumstances like Ladakh but all over the world as it is almost always assumed that ‘progress’ is a universally positive or good aspiration. Commitment to rapid development raises questions about societal health, happiness and well-being. As designers, we exist and work at a curious juncture between health and progress. Our practice and livelihood are often based upon the facilitation of modernity and development. Design is often the instigator and catalyst for such forward motion. Creation is often harnessed in seeking convenience, progress and advancement. What is the designer’s role in facilitating better health and happiness? Ancient Futures – Design and/or Happiness
Ancient Futures – Design and/or Happiness is a collaborative conference between the Asia Digital Art and Design Association, the Korean Society of Design Science and the Society of Design Convergence. All papers will go through a peer review process by the Ancient Futures – Design and/or Happiness paper review committee. Upon review, amendments may be suggested for papers. We also request that the abstract be no more than 500 words. To submit a paper please email: [email protected]. For papers, a template and paper submission form can be found on our website at www.oneconferenceseoul.com. The format is A4 and 2 or 4 pages in length at max.

The conference will be held at Hongik University in the Hongik(hongdae) area of Seoul. Hongik is considered one of the early progressive neighborhoods of Seoul. With a wide array of cultural attractions, night life and dining establishments, Hongik is one of the most lively districts where artists, designers and youth often come to congregate and enjoy life.

반영하여 ‘더 나은’ 사회적 건전과 행복을 가능하게 하는 진정한 ‘진보’의 개념은 무엇일까요? 필요하지만 진정으로 해결하기
어려운 진보, 행복, 만족 그리고 이에 대한 디자인의 관계에 대해 논의가 필요한 시기라고 생각합니다.
이번 2013 <오래된 미래: 행복의 디자인> 학술대회에서 이러한 질문에 답을 얻고자 합니다. 사회적 건강과 발전 사이의
교차점에서 일해온 그리고 현대화를 이끌거나 촉진시키는 역할을 담당해온 디자이너가 먼저 답해야 합니다.

제안서를 모집합니다. 이 학술대회는 역사적, 문화적 및 다양한 맥락 속에서 이러한 디자인 문제점을 연구한 제안서 제출을
권장합니다. 이번 기회를 통해 디자인에 관한 이해를 확장하고 이러한 맥락에서 디자인의 정의를 넓힐 수 있도록
