Did you know? Chimneys are one of the most common locations of residential structure fi res in New York State. The Chimney Safety Institute of America reports that creosote accumulation is the leading cause of chimney fi res. A chim-ney that is dirty, blocked or is in disrepair can inhibit proper venting of smoke up the fl ue and can also cause a chimney fi re. Nearly all residential fi res originating in the chimney are preventable.

Is your home’s heating system safe? Do you have a record of chim-ney inspections? In many cases the chimney is the most commonly overlooked part of your home’s heat-ing system. Soot buildup becomes acidic by nature as it is exposed to moisture. This sooty acidic buildup called creosote will weaken the clay tiles and cement joints located on the inside of your chimney. These are very critical compo-nents to your chimney’s integrity. Over time they will structurally degrade causing an unsafe con-dition that eventually will require attention.

Do you have an unsafe condition? The danger of an unsafe condition is very serious. One of the fi rst concerns is carbon monoxide poisoning. This deadly gas can enter your home through any small crack in the chim-ney. Carbon monoxide poisoning is debilitating. It causes confusion and disorientation. The gas is colorless and odorless. If this occurs it may continue undetected and will render children and adults unconscious. Another major concern is a chimney fi re. A combination of high temperatures and creosote buildup can ignite a 2100º fi re.
