One America's Story

What is nationalism? Nationalism is a feeling a pride, loyalty, and protectiveness towards one's country.

What representative from Kentucky supported it?

Henry Clay­ strong nationalist.

Nationalism Unites the U.S.

What is the American System and who promoted it?

American System, a plan promoted by Henry Clay to make the U.S. self­sufficient.

What were the three main actions?

Establish a protective tariff, tax on imported goods (1816)

Establish a second national bank, single currency (1816).

Improve the country's transportation system.

Roads and Canals

Who started to fund transportation in the US?

Congress (federal government)

What was the National Road? The U.S.'s main east­west route. (Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois)

What did the Erie Canal connect?

New York City and Buffalo, NY.

What did the Erie Canal help do for the US?

It opened up settlement and trade in the upper Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region.

It fueled nationalism, connecting two sections of the country.

Stimulated eastern and western trade.

How did it impact New York City?

New York became the nation's largest city.

Besides roads and canals, what other form of transportation was introduced in the 1830s?

Steam­powered trains, by 1850 9,000 miles of track existed.

National Boundaries

What was the Rush­Bagot Agreement of 1817?

An agreement between Britain and America to limit naval forces on the Great Lakes.

What decision was made at the Convention of 1818?

An agreement between Britain and America to set the 49th parallel as the US­Canadian border as far west as the Rockies.

What is the Adams­Onis Treaty of 1819? 

Spain gave Florida to the US and gave up claims of Oregon Country.

Why did it occur? Pirates and runaway slaves used Florida as a refuge.

Seminoles of Florida were attacking Georgia.

Andrew Jackson sent to stop attacks.

Told Spain to police Florida or turn it over to US.
