two nominations today is very exciting.” He declines to point to a single reason for the station’s recognition. “I wouldn’t say there is one ‘big thing’ that we have done in the past year that helped us earn the nominations. I believe it’s all about coming

in every day and doing the little things big. There continues to be a great spirit about KYGO and the relationship we have with our listeners. It’s a privilege to continue to be part of it.”

KTTS VP/GM Rex Hansen cites his station’s community service in being nominated. The station won a Marconi in 1999. “Our news, weather and traffic elements are important,” he says. “There aren’t many full-service Country stations anymore. We’re one of those unique station that encompasses all those elements while still delivering on the promotions and programming side as well. It’s great for our staff to be recognized for their work this year and over the course of many years.” Personality nods went to KUAD’s Good Morning Guys, Brian Gary and Todd Harding (Medium Market) and the KITX Morning Circus of Will Payne and Barry Diamond (Small Market). Recipients will be honored September 24 at the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Dinner & Show during the NAB Radio Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

My tunes: Music that shaped My life Caitlin & Will’s Caitlin Lynn discusses her most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Dave Matthews Band, Under The Table And Dreaming: This album taught me how to really listen and move to music. It taught me to close my eyes, put my hand out the window of the car and just sway! Plus DMB was my first-ever band crush. 2. Sara Evans, Born To Fly: I was into singing rock and punk music, but after I got this album I went country and never looked back.

I realized country was what I wanted to sing above anything else. 3. Lucinda Williams, Essence: Lucy is such a powerful songwriter. She isn’t the world’s greatest singer, but there is a pain in her voice that I am so drawn to. She makes you feel it through her voice and songwriting. 4. Mindy Smith, One Moment More & Long Island Shores: These albums showed me how to surrender to and feel music. It was as if Mindy climbed into my head and wrote down everything she saw. She said everything I wanted to say and didn’t know how. 5. Kasey Chambers, Barricades And Brickwalls: This album taught me how to be a woman, own it and be bad-ass! It taught me how to be strong and be a little bit scandalous. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Purple Rain by Prince, but by the time I send this I will have listened to it! • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: The Beatles, all of it! Believe me; I’ve tried, ask David Friedman. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King by Dave Matthews Band. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “People are Strange” by The Doors and “Alligator Pie” by Dave Matthews Band.

Carefully crafting several e-mails to every viewer interactive show on CNBC, I went in quietly [but as seen in the photo] kicked her butt! I got myself booked on CNBC’s On The Money with Carmen Wong-Ulrich. “We taped over the phone this past Wednesday, and the show aired over the weekend. Yep, in less than 10 days I was able to get myself seven sweet minutes on national television. I didn’t even have to follow the Weather Channel around, or fly to New York to jump up and down in the Today show background.” Watch Allen’s victorious appearance at www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?play=1&video=1187383834.

Flatts Rock Wrigley (continued from page 1)back to the stage, and they joined him on “Whenever You Come Around.” Hearing Vince and Gary LeVox harmonize was nothing short of magical. Having Gill onstage was also special to RF’s Joe Don Rooney, who said backstage that the fellow Oklahoman and guitar-slinger has always been his hero. Rucker returned for the show’s finale, singing Hootie & the Blowfish’s 1994 hit, “Hold My Hand” before joining Flatts on a blistering version of “Life Is A Highway.” To the delight of the Chicago crowd, Gill sported a Cubs jersey when he returned to join RF and they went wild when Joe Don, Jay and Gary took the stage for their encore wearing Cubs gear. Watching these guys rock Wrigley to its core for more than an hour-and-a-half makes you wonder how anyone could leave them off any Entertainer of the Year ballot. Earlier in the night, when Gill took the stage in the middle slot, he told the crowd, “Hi, I’m Amy Grant’s husband, and I’m here to play my ass off.” His 11-song set was punctuated with the typical Gill humor, which included self-deprecating jokes about feeling a little out of place since he was “old enough to

be the father” of the other acts on the bill. Illinois politics also took a few shots, with Vince also observing that Rucker could become the state’s next Governor. Rucker opened the night and got a great response from the crowd, who sang his trio of country hits as loudly as they sang anything from Vince or the Flatts. There was no doubt they accepted him as a country artist. Later, while watching Vince Gill from the side of the stage, he talked of the “incredible thrill” it was to play in Wrigley after having seen so many Cubs games there. He added, “And, I’m now the answer to a trivia question: ‘Who was the first Country act to ever play Wrigley Field?’” It was also a magical night for yours truly, a native Chicagoan who could only stand looking in awe at the stage in center field. Never in my life could I have ever imagined a Country concert at Wrigley. Not even when I worked at WMAQ during its halcyon days in the mid-late ‘70s was Country in Wrigley even whispered about. Kudos to Live Nation’s Brian O’Connell, also from the Windy City, for making this happen. – LH

Country’s May-June PPM Comparisons

KPLX Tops Country’s PPM Cume Leaders

Arbitron released its June 2009 PPM results last week, and among them were first-ever PPM as currency ratings for Miami, Minneapolis, Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle. Here’s an overview of how Country stations fared in markets where PPM is currency. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet, a “^” designates Country stations in the same market owned by a single operator and a “t” indicates a tie.

There are 26 stations measured by Arbitron’s PPM that garner in excess of 300,000 weekly listeners. They are ranked here by the June 2009 cume, with the May 2009 cume in parentheses. June was the first month as currency under PPM for Miami, Minneapolis, Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle. Market rank is in parentheses. A “+” indicates a Classic Country station and a “^” indicates co-owned stations within a market.
