Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, the Maker and Redeemer of all believers: Grant to the faithful departed the unsearchable benefits of the passion of your

Son; that on the day of his appearing they may be manifested as your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Collect for Heroic Service

O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of

decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All may sit.

A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy Deuteronomy 8:11-20

T ake care that you do not forget the Lord your God, by failing to keep his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I

am commanding you today. When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock, and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good. Do not say to yourself, “My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today. If you do forget the Lord your God and follow other gods to serve and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. Like the nations that the Lord is destroying before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 130 De profundis Anglican Chant: C. Hylton Stewart

1 Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; * let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. 2 If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, * O Lord, who could stand? 3 For there is forgiveness with you; * therefore you shall be feared. 4 I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; * in his word is my hope.

5 My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, * more than watchmen for the morning. 6 O Israel, wait for the Lord, * for with the Lord there is mercy; 7 With him there is plenteous redemption, * and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

A Reading from the Paul’s First Epistle to the Church in Corinth 1 Corinthians 15:50-58

W hat I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable

inherit the imperishable. Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled:

“Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn: Blessed Jesus, at thy word

The Holy Gospel John 5:24-27

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

J esus said, “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under

judgment, but has passed from death to life.

“Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.”

Holy Communion

Offertory Anthem Never weather-beaten sail from Songs of Farewell C. H. H. Parry (1848-1918)

Never weather-beaten sail more willing bent to shore, Never tired pilgrim's limbs affected slumber more, Than my wearied sprite now longs to fly out of my troubled breast: O come quickly, sweetest Lord, and take my soul to rest!

Ever blooming are the joys of heaven's high Paradise, Cold age deafs not there our ears nor vapour dims our eyes: Glory there the sun outshines; whose beams the Blessed only see: O come quickly, glorious Lord, and raise my sprite to Thee!

The people stand as the ushers bring the offerings of bread, wine, and money to the Celebrant.

Presentation Hymn

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer A

The Celebrant continues

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth. For in the multitude of your saints, you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Page 13: On this Veteran’s Day 11/11/18 - St. James by-the-Sea · 11/11/2018  · Intercessor In communion with all the saints of every time and place, let us offer our prayers to the God

13

Sanctus & Benedictus

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He Who cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The people may kneel as the Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and maker of all.

Jesus stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

All, together: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, Almighty God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Page 14: On this Veteran’s Day 11/11/18 - St. James by-the-Sea · 11/11/2018  · Intercessor In communion with all the saints of every time and place, let us offer our prayers to the God

14

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in Christ. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

The Celebrant continues

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread. A period of silence is kept.

Fraction Anthem: Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, grant them eternal rest.

The Celebrant continues

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

You are welcome to receive Holy Communion at St. James regardless of your denominational affiliation. Please follow the directions of the ushers. Discourse as we explore the possibilities of peaceful, respectful interaction. Learn new ways to talk to one another that shed light and offer new understanding, hope, and unity across our divides. Other topics covered in the series will include: The Tenets of Civil Discourse, Values Based Conversations, and The Complexities of Policy.

2019 Stewardship Campaign Underway

We are nearing the end of our official Stewardship Campaign. You all should have received a Pledge Card in your mailboxes last month—please let the office know if you did not. To date we have already received pledge cards from 122 households totaling $371,985. This year’s theme is “Putting Ourselves on the M.A.P.” How will the Mission Action Plan help guide our congregation into all that God has called us to do? Where do we see ourselves fitting into that vision? Our In-Gathering will be held next Sunday, November 18th, and we hope to have as many of the pledge cards turned in by then as possible. Thank you.

Reflecting states of mind as well as nations, the program features music by the great Josquin himself and others who emulated—or inspired—this constantly self-reinventing and shape-shifting composer. Immerse yourself in the voices of seven men singing from ancient manuscripts, sharing a single music stand and weaving a magical sonic world of polyphony. This concert will transport you out of time and space. For tickets and information: sdems.org

Parlez-vous Français (un peu)?

Did you know that St. James has been host to a French Conversation Class for almost ten years? The class has space for a few additional folks who would be interested in practicing their verbal skills in French around a table of friendly and encouraging peers, in a wide range of language proficiency. The group is led by Sophie Dormal, a Belgian and native French speaker, who has been working in the San Diego area for many years as a French language teacher/tutor. They meet weekly on Thursdays in the Library—10-11:30am (advanced) and 12:30-1:30pm (intermediate). There is a small fee. For more information, contact Sophie at [email protected].

Prayers for Our Diocese in a Time of Transition

O God, we thank you for the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, and for the Church’s ministry of reconciliation that has marked our common life for over four decades. In this time of transition, help us to welcome change as an opportunity to grow. Shower upon each member your Holy Spirit, that we will be strengthened for local ministry and love more deeply the one body to which you have called us. Bless those who search for our fifth diocesan bishop, that they may without fear discern your will for the future of our diocese. In all things, grant us your wisdom and grace, that the bishop whom we elect to lead us will be the one whom you have called. This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever.

At St. James by-the-Sea we welcome and care for all

people at every stage of their spiritual journey, and we

seek to create opportunities for faith in God to be

discovered, renewed and put into action.
