The Qinghai province of China, near Tibet, experienced a 7.1 magnitude earthquake at 7:49 a.m. on Wednesday morning, notes the China Earthquake Network according to the the Houston Chronicle.

There have been about 2,000 deaths reported due to the earthquake, the communications system in the area of the quake is compromised; thus a full death tally is still impossible to determine.

The earthquake hit at a depth of 20.5 miles, some media sources are saying the quake hit at only 6 miles below the surface of the earth.
