Moving On Up!
October 7th, 2017 marked an exciting and long awaited day for Wright Brothers Construction.
The dedication and ribbon cutting for the new office building was held coinciding with the
annual picnic. Several distinguished guests along with many past, present and hopefully
future employees & crew members attended the unveiling and grand tour.
It’s inspiring to see how Wright Brothers has grown from the first office and shop built on this
site back in 1977 by James and Robert Wright to what we have today.

A message from the
President:
Core Values: integrity, urgency, selflessness, and hard work
First, on behalf the Executive Team, thank you for your commitment to Wright Brothers. These are exciting times. I look to our core values statement as the guiding principles we can use to guide how we conduct ourselves, our business, and interact with each other. This statement is published in your employment handbook, it says… Wright Brothers is an ever-evolving Christian owned business steeped in the traditional core values of integrity, urgency, selflessness, and hard work. As such, we hold ourselves accountable in imple-menting these principles and leading by example. While no statement guarantees perfection, it is my intent to live the values of integrity, urgency, self-lessness, and hard work. Likewise, I ask you to commit to those values. Our company has been driven and shaped by these values from the very beginning when in 1961 my uncle and father James and Robert Wright founded this company. Since then, what started as one bulldozer working on neighbor’s farms in south central Tennessee, has grown to a leading regional contractor offering a variety of construction services across the southeast United States. Whether you’re working on a new location highway project, rebuilding an urban interstate, constructing or maintaining an industrial site, building a landfill, replacing a bridge, laying utilities, paving a road or parking lot, maintaining equipment or working in an administrative area here at Wright Brothers we believe achieving a balance of safety, quality and production give us all the best opportunity to ensure our operations are performed safely for all stakeholders. We build with excellent quality, craftsman-ship and value and we complete projects on schedule and in budget. We believe that personal growth is just as important as one’s career development. So along with our safety programs and other training opportunities, we have project caring teams which guide our daily ability to care for each other, supplemented with chaplains who regularly visit our job sites providing emotional and spiritual support. If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to subscribe to Right Now Media, the videos are gems and touch on a variety of subjects including work, family, and community. We also work with local organizations and outreach programs for the benefit of both our employees and the communities in which we live and work. I would like to mention a final guiding principle which is “to leave everything we come in contact with better than we found it.” We encourage everyone, to be aware of their surroundings but most of all take ownership of your part of the puzzle and act in a way that ensures everyone goes home safe and a better prepared person for all life has to offer at the end of every day. Again, thank you for choosing to be a part of the Wright Brothers family. May God bless you, please work safe, and I hope you find your employment rewarding. Steve Wright

Back in early October, the team from CAT® Simulators arrived in Charleston
to facilitate the installation and start-up of three new pieces of Wright Brothers’
equipment. Specifically, simulators for a D8 Dozer, the 740B Articulated Truck,
and a 336D Excavator. Over the next few days Will Ollis, with the help of
Information Technology (IT) guru, Ray Lopez, and the new training coordinator,
Jarad Williams, and the CAT crew were able to get the system up and running.
Since then, Will has been finding opportunities to bring in both experienced
and inexperienced operators to test on the new machines. These preliminary
exams will allow us to create benchmarks and develop a training program for
both Advanced and Beginner operators.
We are currently working on getting a truck, trailer, and generator ready to move these around to the jobsites. Once that is prepared, we will be setting up a calendar and training schedule to facilitate every job getting their crews some seat time. These simulators will also be utilized as recruiting tools and demonstrations at career fairs and college recruitment events to help find more great talent!
Advancements for our
current and future operators

project. The reconstruction of Arkadelphia/Hwy 78 consist of a 6 lane
wide 2 Phased 370 LF Simple Span Bridge, Bridge Demolition, 120,000
CY of Borrow Excavation, Temp MSE Wall, Permanent MSE Wall,
19,170 SQYD of 13” Thick Concrete Paving, Multiple Traffic Signal
Assemblies, Roadway Lighting, Asphalt Paving, and Erosion Control.
The challenging aspect of this project is the 6 Phase Sequence of
Construction while maintaining through traffic and multiple intersection
access at all times during construction. Multiple major traffic shifts and
detours have been planned and executed solely by WBC and has
allowed construction to continue as planned and ahead of schedule.

2018 marks our 4th year working with APAC Midsouth Aggregates at the Warren County Quarry in
Camak, GA. This “state of the art” facility is a granite processing plant with automated rail loading system
on a 1,200 acre site. Beginning production in 2011, they have a complete package that encompasses
surge pile stacker, concrete reclaim tunnel, conveyors, 1,000 linear feet of corrugated multi-plate reclaim
tunnel, finishing plant, aggregate washing facility, and sand and fines recovery system.
In 2015 we began building our great relationship with Warren County Quarry. Wright Brothers will have
moved close to 2 Million Cubic Yards by the end of 2018. The work has involved stripping overburden,
hauling product out of the Pit, sand plant sediment pond construction and building a rail bed spur con-
necting to the existing 22,000 LF railroad.
Congratulations for an excellent
Job Well Done!

West Camden Landfill Camden, TN Owner: Waste Management - Matt Arp
This Construction project consisted of an approx. 7 acre cell for the expansion to the existing Landfill.
Seasoned veteran Lonnie Brooks, along with newly promoted foreman Eric Rafe Woodall began construc-
tion in November 2016. With 2 Cat Excavators and 6 Cat 740 Articulating off road dumps the crew moved
close to 600,000 CY’s of earthen material to achieve subgrade elevation.
Clay liner construction began in August 2017 with the placement of 25,000 CY’s of low permeability clay
soil material. The geo-synthetic liner system was composed of 60 mil double sided textured geo-
membrane and overlain with a double sided geo-composite synthetic.
This project also involved installation of 20,000 CY’s of protective soil cover on top of the liner system.
Other items of work include storm water and erosion controls, sediment pond construction, roadway
construction and more.
With over 100 inches of rainfall in the dura-
tion of this project, Lonnie and his team
were able to get the job done and finished
on time.
Another successful job to add to Lonnie’s long
list of accomplishments, and a notch to add to
Rafe Woodall’s belt as well.
Great Job Gentlemen! Both Waste Management
and Wright Brothers greatly appreciate all your
efforts and the hard work of your crew.

Overview 2017 was a good productive and safe year. Completing nearly $28 million of contract work with no lost time accidents, we continue to strive for the Safety-Quality-Production bal-ance. The year started with the paving of the new Fed Ex facility (01-0469) in Chattanooga that included a heavy-duty pavement section con-sisting of a B mix for the binder and a BM mix for the surface course. The completion of Apison Pike (01-0425) came in late spring. This was one of the first projects WBC completed self-preforming all major trades (grading, structures, utilities and pav-ing). Hopefully there will be many more.

Welcome ADI - Tony Boals
Through out the summer the main-line paving crews completed several resurfacing projects around the Chattanooga area with a TDOT specified 411-D mix. Some of the resurfacing projects include Hwy 27 in Red Bank (01-0481), Hwy 153 (01-0495) and Little Debbie Parkway (01-0502). The crews continued their work on several TDOT and county constructions projects across the region in McMinn, Polk, Bradley and Hamil-ton Counties. Projects such as the widening of East Brainerd Road (01-0432) and the widening of US 27 (01-0455) in downtown Chattanooga will carry on through the 2018 season and longer.
WBC Welcomes ADI Pavement into its family of Companies
In January 2017, WBC entered into a partnership with ADI Pavement LLC to address the com-
mercial and industrial paving needs in the local markets. With Chad Norman, Greg Kirby and
Neil Graham, ADI brings the marketing and sales experience of small paving, concrete, striping
and sealing work to the mix of services we offer. With additional asphalt needs and partnering
with the Industrial Division, we see ADI as a great fit to our family. WELCOME ADI !

Over 300 high
school and college
students attending
the Chattanooga
State Career Fair
were introduced to
our company and
our industry.
Company representatives Kelaiah King, Parker Fugate and Bryson Riddle speak with the stu-
dents about our company and the different divisions we have such as Contracting, Paving and
Industrial. They are informed of the job opportunities whether they are college bound or not.
They learn that if college is not in their career path, they could consider a labor or equipment
operator position and let them know how they could work their way up.
If college is in their future they can choose a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Manage-
ment, CAD, etc.
The students also find out about summer Internship possibilities and how it can turn into full time
positions.
Reaching out into
the Community is
one way we find
our future most
valuable assets for
a continued strong
workforce for this
Industry.
Pictured above is our own Will Ollis instructing the students in the excavator games. The goal is to
pick up the ball from the top of the cone and once the ball is in the bucket, drop the ball into a trash
can. This game helps the students get a feel of what it is like to operate a piece of equipment. It’s a
big hit!
A special thanks to Stowers for helping out with the Mini-ex and cooking lunch for all.

Caring in the Work Place
I Chose to Look the Other Way
I could have saved a LIFE That Day
But I Chose to Look the Other Way.
It Wasn’t that I Didn’t Care;
I Had the Time, And I was There.
But I didn’t want to Seem a Fool,
Or Argue over a Safety Rule.
I knew He’d done the Job before:
If I spoke Up He might get Sore.
His Chances didn’t Seem that Bad;
I’d done the same, He knew I had.
So I Shook my Head and Walked on By;
He knew the Risks as Well As I.
He Took the Chance, I Closed an Eye;
AND WITH THAT ACT, I LET HIM DIE.
I Could have Saved a Life that Day,
But I Chose to Look the Other Way
Now Every Time I See His Wife
I know I Could have Saved His Life.
That Guilt is Something I Must Bear;
But isn’t something you need share.
If You See a Risk that Others Take
That Puts Their Health or Life at Stake
The Question Asked or Thing you Say;
Could Help Them Live Another Day.
If You See a Risk and Walk Away
Then Hope You Never have to Say
“I Could have Saved a Life that day
But I Chose to Look the Other Way”.

Drug abuse, how does it happen and the effects to the brain.
I’m going to severely over simplify a very complicated process in hopes of describing this deep subject to begin to understand the profound impact on the brain.
First imagine your favorite food, visualize it, smell it, taste it, think about how it makes you feel when you eat it. Now, be honest, can you taste it, do you want it now? The answer is probably ‘yes’ and the reason why is because a favorable memory has been created deep within your primal area of the brain. Drilling down further, the favorable memory is the release of ‘dopamine’, which is ‘pleasure’, this is how and why we experience ‘pleasure’. When we eat food our brain releases ‘dopamine’ which gives us pleasure causing us to want more of it. So, we are driven by ‘dopamine’ (pleasure) however, the brain is only able to naturally produce ‘so much’ of it. For the sake of argument let’s say the brain produces only enough ‘dopamine’ to fit within your hand. That’s the maximum quantity it can produce, period. We’ll come back to this is a minute… Now let’s look at the brain like a wiring harness in your car. There are several wires all responsible for different ‘experiences or reactions’ specific to you. Let’s look at the wire in your brain that is responsible for how we experience ‘alcohol’ let’s say this wire is ‘undamaged’ meaning when you drink the alcohol you can drink it or not (take it or leave it) without any real conscious thought. Now let’s say the wire is ‘damaged’ in my brain, I drink the same amount as you however, my experience is totally different than yours. I get a completely different reaction because my brain processes it with much more intensity. Alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, opiates are all drugs and all have their representative “wire” in the brain. Back to the alcohol example, when the wire is “damaged” your experience is much more intensified and thus your ‘predisposition to addiction is much more likely than the person who’s wire isn’t. Let’s look at prescription drugs (opiates), the same thing here. Two people visit
Get a Grip - Scott Elam
the doctor for the same thing and get the same prescription, one is unaffected adversely by it and the other develops an addiction – the reason is one has a healthy wire the other has a ‘damaged’ wire. We never know until we test the wire if it is damaged or not, and often times that first test is all it takes. Another thing about healthy wires, if we continue to test them they will fail eventually, it’s all like playing Russian roulette.
For the experience of the person with the damaged wire, let’s return to the top and the handful of ‘dopamine’ that the brain is able to generate. When there is a ‘damaged wire’ the brain is basically tricked into thinking it hasn’t generated the maximum dopamine and thus continues to generate more and more, let’s say it now produces so much that you have to use a bucket to hold all of it. Now remember how much you like your favorite food (and remember the dopamine generated is only enough to hold in your hand) but what if I could make your favorite food and the dopamine generated would require a bucket to hold all of it. Do you think the brain would create a memory that would crave it? ABSOLUELY it would!
The brain would do anything it could to get more of it. Now think about ‘drugs’ this is basically what is happening to the abuser, the person addicted to drugs, alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes, name it.
The person after recognizing they have an addiction may want more than ever to stop however, they are unable. This is because they are not in control, the brain has taken over and the brain wants dopamine. Without recognizing what is happening and getting the proper help, overcoming the addiction will be extremely difficult. When we are talking specifically about opiates, the craving is so severe, the memory stamp on the brain is so strong many are unable to overcome the addiction and unfortunately many never make it.
I hope this helps you understand a little more about addictions, if you have questions or would like to dive deeper into this subject please tell your supervisor or reach out to me. We will work together to help.
