Rapid technological
advances like these are
emerging every day,
and theyre profoundly
transforming the way we
live and do business.
In fact, this storm
of change will forever
alter Canadas business
landscape threatening
the very industries and
companies that anchor
our economy unless
they act and act now,
according to a year-long
study by Deloitte, which
surveyed 700 business
leaders across the
country.
The report, entitled
Age of disruption:
Are Canadian firms
prepared?, found a
startling number
of companies are ill-
prepared to withstand
this disruption. Among
its key findings? Nearly
nine out of 10 or 87
per cent of Canadian
firms are not fully
prepared, while almost
half of all firms believe
theyre better prepared
than they actually
are. Furthermore, a
companys size, age or
sector has little bearing
on how prepared it is.
Overall, only 13 per cent
of Canadian firms are
considered to be highly
prepared, while 35 per
cent more than one in
three are considered
wholly unprepared.
Canada has
a preparedness
problem, says Terry
Stuart, Deloittes Chief
Innovation Ocer. A
majority of organizations
will be caught o guard
if they dont take steps
today to improve their
performance when it
comes to preparedness
for disruption, which
poses a significant
threat to the Canadian
economy and
productivity.
The good news
is, companies that
are unprepared can
learn from the 13 per
cent that are highly
prepared. Deloitte has
outlined four steps
businesses can take to
improve their ability to
anticipate, respond to,
and capitalize on the
disruptive forces ahead:
cultivate awareness,
build the right culture
for preparedness, foster
organizational agility,
and develop eective
resources.
CULTIVATE AWARENESS Ensure company-wide awareness of
technologies that have the potential to
disrupt a business. Speak regularly with
customers, front-line sta and suppliers
about emerging trends.
BUILD THE RIGHT CULTURE FOR PREPAREDNESS Develop a resilient, innovative
organizational culture. Promote,
encourage and provide incentives for
innovative behaviour.
FOSTER ORGANIZATIONAL AGILITY Cultivate the ability to rapidly reorganize systems, assets and people in order
to respond quickly to opportunities
and challenges. Embrace new ways of
making decisions getting caught up
in bureaucracy can sometimes bring
innovation to a screeching halt.
DEVELOP EFFECTIVE RESOURCES Acquire and deploy the best people,
technology and financial resources
possible so you can be more resilient and
competitive in the face of disruption.
PARTNER CONTENT DELOITTE
In addition to
recommending how
businesses can prepare
for disruption, the
report also looks at the
role government and
academia can play.
Deloitte urges a shi in
the education system,
for instance, to focus
more on creating critical
thinkers who can learn,
re-learn and adapt on
a regular basis. It also
says the Canadian
government should
review its visa processes
to ensure that Canadian
companies can hire the
very best in global talent.
Disruption isnt
going to happen in
the distant future its
happening now, says
Stuart. Technologies
like advanced robotics,
artificial intelligence
and 3D printing have
considerable disruptive
potential. Canadian
organizations need
to understand how
to adapt to these
technologies to remain
competitive, both within
Canada and abroad.
Robots are cleaning houses, artificial
intelligence systems can recognize
faces, and 3D printers are able to
manufacture custom-made running
shoes on the spot.

CIBCWhen it came to infrastructure planning for the Games, how did you start? What was the process, given that its such a massive undertaking? This is one of the most ambitious region building initiatives weve ever taken on in Ontario. Thats why were focused on legacythese Games will not only leave a tremendous economic legacy, but also an invaluable social one, too, with brand-new community recreational facilities, a new spirit of volunteerism and an enriched sense of community.
In the 2009 Bid for the Games, the Province laid out its vision to host the Games at a number of venues spread out over a footprint that stretched from Minden Hills to Welland, Caledon to Oshawa. The province wanted the entire Greater Golden Horseshoe region to benefit from hosting the Games.
When it came to using existing facilities, it just made sense. For example, Minden Hills already has an amazing whitewater course and St. Catharines had its world-famous Henley rowing course. Together with the

Toronto has a well-deserved international reputation and has had plenty of opportunities to shine on the world stage. But the region has never before hosted an event as large as the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.
We sat down with Pan Am CEO Saad Rafi to get a better sense of what it took to get ready, and what all that effort will mean to the region afterwards.

venue owners, we decided to upgrade these facilities for the Games and as a continuing legacy for their communities and Canadian high-performance athletes.
Oshawa, Mississauga, downtown Toronto and Whitby also already had great existing facilities, which were transforming with temporary construction or overlay for the Games.
We decided to build new venues where they were needed. Canada lacked a world-class indoor velodromewhich we now have in Miltonand there was a dearth of Olympic-sized pools in the Greater Toronto Area, which weve now resolved with the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and the Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre.
What were the guiding principles when it came to building the venues? The guiding principles we focused on were: delivering world-class venues on budget that would benefit the communities where theyre located, as well as Canadian high-performance athletes for decades to come. Community use and sport legacy is baked into their design. Its not an afterthought.
Balancing these two uses is why these venues will be hives of activity. High usage equals great opportunities for generating revenue, including attracting sport tourisma $5.2-billion a year and growing industry in Canada.
What will be the legacy of the Games? The possibilities are endless. Thats why we really want our communities to feel ownership of them. They can be whatever the community wants them to be. These Games will be one of the biggest events Toronto has ever hosted and were so excited to showcase our city to the world.
The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games will leave important economic, social and sport legacies for Toronto, Ontario and Canada. Theyre an absolutely massive region-building project. The Province of Ontario estimates the Games will create 26,000 jobs and grow the provinces real GDP by $3.7 billion from 2009 to 2017.
For the Games, were building 10 new sport venues and upgrading 15 existing facilities. Theyre a dream come true for Canadas best summer athletes who will finally have access to world-class venues that operate year-round on home soil. PH

UP AND RUNNINGRight from the start, the Games have stood on the finish line for the Union Pearson Express
With athletes, tourists and global media arriving for the XVII Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, there will be significant pressure on the citys infrastructure, most especially when it comes to moving people between the airport and the downtown core. But that demand is one of the reasons UP Express exists. While an air-rail link from the airport to downtown had been discussed for decades, the service was an important part of Torontos pitch for the Games, and was a primary catalyst when it came to finally committing the infrastructure funds.

With a total budget of just over $200 million, the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House is the largest sports-dedicated build for the Games, and stands on record as the biggest infrastructure investment ever made in the history of Canadian amateur sport.
The Aquatics Centre features two 10-lane, 50-metre pools, a 5-metre deep diving tank (with platforms at three metres, five metres, seven and a half metres and 10 metres), and dry-land dive training facilities. It singlehandedly doubled the number of Olympic-sized pools in the Greater Toronto Area.
The Field House offers flexible gymnasium space for training and competition, as well as an indoor track and fitness area with cardio and weightlifting facilities. The Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario will call it home, and will provide world-leading sport sciencefrom biomechanics to nutrition, and sport performance services including coaching and training facilities.

As the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games bring the world to Toronto and surrounding areas this summer, its the investment that comes along with them that could be as important to the region and the communities that call it home. In fact, over $672 million was invested in facilities for the Gamesspread out over 10 new construction projects and 15 rebuilds and renovations.
Long after the last race is run, and the cameras and lights have been packed away, the region will continue to benefit from the lasting legacy of the Gamesin infrastructure and investment that will continue to help our athletes and communities for decades to come.
Here are just a few highlights.

The way corporations
invest their sponsorship
and marketing dollars has
changed dramatically over
the years. Sure, to some
its still just about logo and
brand exposure. But to others,
marketing dollars should achieve
something morethey should
be used to meaningfully connect
to clients, employees and
entire communities. Because
those dollars can really make a
diference.
Take this summers Pan
Am/Parapan Am Games as a
prime example. In 2013, CIBC
announced that it was creating
a frst-of-its-kind program called
CIBC Team Next to provide 67
up-and-coming athletes with
fnancial support and training
for the Games. But just as
importantly, the initiative gave
them full mentoring access to
nine world-renowned Canadian
athletes so that they could learn
from their hard-won experience.
High-performance
wheelchair racer Josh Cassidy is
one of those nine mentors. Its
so important for our athletes to
have not only fnancial support,
but also a strong support system
to encourage them and be
there for them, says Cassidy.
Our CIBC Team Next athletes
are incredibly talented and

dedicated. I cant wait to watch
them compete this summer and
make Canada proud.
Cassidy knows all about the
nerves and mental preparation
that come with competing at
the highest level of sport. Hes a
multiple medalist and veteran of
many international competitions,
including the 2012 London
Paralympics and the Boston
Marathon. Being able to share
his experience and help younger
athletes cope with the pressures
of competing are why he loves
participating in the CIBC Team
Next program.
But he also knows the
importance of investing in the
next generation. The costs of
equipment, travel, competition
and winter training camps are
high, and therefore the money
received from corporate sponsors
is always needed to reach our
goals of performance, he says.
I want young athletes to have
the same access to funding and
guidance to achieve excellence
that I had. Ive travelled the world
representing Canada and would
love for everyone else to have
that opportunity, too. I am so
proud to wear the maple leaf and
call Canada home.
Training to be the best
in the world is an expensive
commitment, and travelling
to competitions puts an even
greater strain on fnancial
requirements. I love being
involved in modern pentathlon,
but it is one of the most expensive
sports for training and travelling,
says CIBC Team Next athlete
Mathea Stevens, a member of
the Senior Canadian National
Modern Pentathlon team.
My sport is made up of fve
completely diferent sports, so
Im really grateful that companies
like CIBC step up to help us.
Beyond CIBC Team Next,
CIBC is also a premier sponsor
of the Canadian Paralympic
Committee. The decision to
support the Canadian Paralympic
Team was an easy one for us,
says Laura Dottori-Attanasio,
Chief Risk Ofcer and Diversity
& Inclusion Champion, CIBC.
We are proud to invest in these
world-class athletes who will
inspire Canadians with their
incredible accomplishments
as they compete to reach their
podium dreams.
As Lead Partner of the Games, CIBC is
working hard to create connections with its
11 million clients, 44,000 employees, visitors
and fans by ofering memorable experiences
through Games initiatives like the Torch
Relay, PANAMANIA presented by CIBC, and
other exciting activations throughout the
competition.

The Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome is a three-storey, oval-shaped, fully accessible velodromethe only facility of its kind in Canada, and only the second in North America that meets top international standards.
Designed to operate year-round, it features a 250-metre timber track with two 42-degree banks, and represents the first Olympic-calibre training facility for high-performance Canadian cyclists who, for the last two decades, have been forced to train outside the country.
The Velodrome has been designed so that it can be used simultaneously for several purposes. While cyclists speed around the track, three multi-use courts located on the infield can be hosting volleyball or basketball games, and runners can make use of the full track located on the spectator level.
It also houses offices for Cycling Canada and Cycling Ontario, a training lab, fitness centre, multi-purpose space, office space, caf/lounge, community bicycle storage and a retail bike and repair shop.

CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium75 Balsam Avenue North, HamiltonFirm: Ontario Sports Solutions
The new CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium stands on hallowed sporting ground, continuing a history that stretches back nearly a history.
It began in 1928, when a civic stadium was built on former farmland to host the 1930 British Empire Games (later to become the Commonwealth Games). In 1950, the stadium became home to the CFL franchise Hamilton Tiger-Cats, only to be rebuilt in 1970 and renamed Ivor Wynne Stadium. Throughout its history, Ivor Wynne was continuously renovated and improved, until 2011, when it was earmarked for a major renovation.
But it would never happen. Instead, it was decided that the existing facility would be torn down and an entirely new facility built. The design of the new CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium reimagines the historic site as a flexible neighbourhood stadium that can host professional and amateur sports, cultural gatherings and prestigious national and international events. It includes amenities like luxury suites, club seats, press and broadcasting facilities and multi-purpose space that will be used to support the Games.
Or ces travaux nont jamais eu lieu.

A long-forgotten piece of Toronto returned to life this spring, thanks in large part to the arrival of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.
Derelict and industrial, the West Don Lands were once a lost 80-acre cul-de-sac where the DVP bends into the Gardiner Expressway. But in the last few months, thanks to a $500-million investment, its become the citys newest neighbourhoodthe Canary Districtnamed for the iconic school-turned-restaurant that was once a cornerstone of the area.
The project began with Waterfront Toronto, an organization formed in 2001 with a 25-year mandate to transform 2,000 acres of brownfield lands on the waterfront into beautiful, sustainable mixed-use communities and dynamic public spaces.
Although the project was always on the slate, the Games added fuel to the fire when it was decided that the revitalization would create the perfect location for an athletes village community.
Dundee Kilmer Developments was awarded a fixed-price contract to design, build and finance the village site, kicking the project off in spring 2012. It features 805 condo units and extensive ground-floor retail that will bring a unique urban modernism to the area. As part of the contract, Dundee Kilmer will also build three additional residential sites.
For now, the new condos will have no flooring or kitchens, but each will be home to up to 10 athletes per

two-bedroom unit, with privacy created by temporary partitions. Short-term structureslike a tent dining hall designed to seat 2,500 and offer free meals to athleteswill take care of other Games-oriented needs.
But perhaps more importantlyfactoring in learning from recent infrastructure projects such as the Vancouver Olympicsa key part of this project is what comes next. After the Games, the developer has six months to take down the partitions, install kitchens and other amenities, and get the spaces ready for market.
In fact, when the Games end, the neighbourhood will become The Canary District in short order, with a new YMCA, George Brown Colleges first-ever student residence, two affordable housing residential buildings, two residential development sites and plenty of parkland. There will be space for 2,000 homeowners when the site transforms in spring 2016, not to mention 43,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.
Its not often that cities are given the opportunity to reinvent neighbourhoods, but the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games has given Toronto exactly that.
