Be cool on Sunday afternoons inAugust at our “Lewis and Clark

in Films” series taking place onAugust 20 and 27.

Attendees will enjoy free films andcommentary. Programs begin at 1:30p.m. in the Film Vault at the CentralLibrary in downtown Kansas City,Mo., 10th & Baltimore. The films areco-sponsored by the Missouri ValleySpecial Collections.

On August 20, attendees will enjoytwo films: “Lewis and Clark: GreatJourney West,” an IMAX film byNational Geographic and narrated byJeff Bridges; plus “Lewis and ClarkCorps of Discovery in Missouri” pro-duced by Missouri Department ofConservation. Comments will be pro-

“Journals Nightly”

To commemorate the 200thanniversary of Lewis and

Clark’s return from the West inSeptember 1806, our chapter willpresent “Journals Nightly,” a series oflive readings from the expeditionjournals on September 11-15. Thereadings will take place beside theMissouri River at sites along the trailnear the 1806 campsites of the expe-dition. The programs will include aninterpretation of the journal entries,relating the context of 200 years agowith the present and perspectives ofthe future, and will be presented by

Leavenworth will wel-come the DiscoveryExpedition of St. Charles,which will be encampeduntil the morning ofSeptember 15. The city’sannual RiverFest event onSeptember 14-17 willinclude Lewis and Clarkreenactors, exhibits, foodvendors in LeavenworthLanding Park and fire-works over the MissouriRiver. Highlights includea dedication ceremony ofNative American flags,reenactment of the collec-tion of the raccoon grape-leaf plant, the last plant

specimen collected on theexpedition, readings fromthe journals, eveningmusical entertainment,and singing “in the great-est harmony” late into theevening as recorded inthe journals onSeptember 14, 1806.

Ross Marshall and DanSturdevant, the KansasCity Parks and Recreationboard unanimously votedto rename the circle areaof the overlook at 8th andJefferson streets in down-town Kansas City, Mo., as“Lewis and Clark Point.”The point overlooks KawPoint, the confluence ofthe Missouri and Kansasrivers where Lewis andClark camped in June1804, and contains animpressive statue repre-sentative of the expedi-tion erected by JonathanKemper in April 2000.

Lewis and Clarkclimbed the hill at thislocation on Sept. 15, 1806(note in this newsletterthe commemorative pro-gram to be held at noonon Sept. 15, 2006).

Approximately thirtymembers and

guests participated in ourbus tour on Saturday,April 8. Our first stop wasat Big Lake State Park innorthwest Missouri, siteof Lewis and Clark’scampsite of September10, 1806.

On the way up, wereviewed issues surround-ing the LouisianaPurchase, preparationsthat Lewis and Clarkmade for the journey, andread journal excerpts cov-ering the expedition asthey journeyed from KawPoint to the Nebraskaborder in late June andearly July, 1804.

Our next stop was atNodaway Island, a beauti-ful riverside setting nearthe campsites of July 8,1804 and Sept. 11, 1806.

A wonderful lunchwas enjoyed at Ryan’sBuffet in St. Joseph.

We traveled throughhistoric St. Joseph toWyeth Hill, a high parkthat overlooks theMissouri River and itsoriginal wide loop to thewest has been straight-ened, but would havebeen the location of theexpedition’s campsite ofJuly 7, 1804 .

A short downhill drivetook us to Riverside Park,the principal ferry loca-tion for emigrants travel-ing the Oregon andCalifornia trails in the1840s and 1850s. It alsowas near the expedition’scampsite of September12, 1806, which they cor-rectly called St. Michael’sPrairie.

King Hill Overlookwas our next stop. It wasanother terrific view ofthe river bottom and St.Michael’s Prairie area.

We then descendedKing Hill and traveledabout five miles south-west of St. Joseph toanother riverside settingcalled ‘Jentill Brees,’which is near the expedi-tion’s campsite of July 6,1804. On the morning ofJuly 6, 1804, Sgt. Floydwrote “Set out prossed[proceeded] under aJentell Brees from theSouth west the waterwase So strong that wecould Hardly Steem it.”

“We proceeded on” asthe journals often said,and went south toLeavenworth. Just underCentennial Bridge is theapproximate campsite ofboth July 1, 1804 and

September 14, 1806.They camped on the“Isles des Parques” orField Islands.

Earlier in the day ofSeptember 14, the expedi-tion met boats of trapperscoming upriver and wereable to obtain whiskey,something they had nothad for more than a year.

Clark recorded that they“Sung Songs untill11oClock at night in thegreatest harmoney”

Our group returned todowntown Kansas City,having experienced a lit-tle of what the Lewis andClark expedition wit-nessed in both 1804 and1806.

Foundation will hold its38th annual meeting onSept. 18-19 in St. Louis.

The theme of the meet-ing is “Untold Stories:Endurance, Discovery,Achievement.” Attendeeswill travel the Lewis andClark National HistoricTrail, visit historic sitesassociated with the expe-dition, and experienceeducational and enter-taining reenactments,programs and perform-ances. In addition, mem-bers share their experi-ences and renew friend-ships with fellow expedi-

Final Signature Eventof the Lewis and ClarkBicentennial

The final SignatureEvent of the Lewis

and Clark Bicentennialwill be Sept. 20-24 on theSt. Louis riverfront.

The event begins with atwo-day symposium fol-lowed by a weekend ofactivities. The weekend,which kicks off with a his-toric opening ceremonyon the Riverfront, will behighlighted by tours toLewis and Clark historicsites, a multitude of edu-cational exhibits and

activities providing funfor all ages, and thought-provoking presentationsby American Indiantribes, environmentalists,scholars and educators.

The event will com-mence with an evening oflively entertainment,including comedians andmusical acts and a reflec-tive closing ceremony,which will provide transi-tion into the next 200years. In addition to thesignature event, commu-nities in both Missouriand Illinois are planningcommemorative activitiesthroughout the region.
