And so came the day when the King of BMD called upon his most valiant knight, Sir Defend-A-Lot, and said unto him:

“Go thee, valiant knight, to the kingdom of perfect Interoperability, and bring back the Princess Link- Sixtina, for we would have her as our bride”

“But be careful”, continued the king,“for the Princess is shut up in a high tower, guarded by fierce and horrible knights, and the road to perfect – Interoperability is long and arduous, and full of perils”

Sir Defend-A-Lot mounted his horse, which was known throughout the land as The Hardiest Animal Around and set out on the road to perfect-Interoperability, to bring back the king’s future bride

And so, one fine morning, when the sun was shining and the birds were chirping in the Land of BMD, the bold and trustworthy knight

And as he rode he came upon a big wall, and in the wall there was a gate, and the gate was closed, locked, and bolted, and over the gate there was a sign, and the words on the sign said “language barrier”.It was a fearsome sight, for everybody in those parts knew that he who wants to cross the language barrier must first answer three questions, and if you fail to answer the first question your tongue is cut out and if you fail to answer the second question your horse’s tongue is cut out ,and if you fail to answer the third, well, you do not really want to know

But our Sir Defend-A-Lot was a brave and noble knight, and his knees did not falter, and his brow remained dry, and when a voice spoke from within the gate and asked the first question: “Please say: ‘Your track 0001 is my track 0352’, in Hebrew”, he not only complied with the request, but spoke the sentence in all 372 languages that his mother taught him when he was no more than three years of age. And the keepers of the barrier were so impressed, that they let him pass without further questioning

Sir Defend-A-Lot rode on, and he came upon a high castle, and this castle was the dwelling of the prince of combined planning. Long ago, this prince had lost his mind, because he could not produce a common planning tool, which would suit all manner of terrain, and every array of weapons. When a traveler passed by the castle, the prince would cordially invite him in, and would entertain him pleasantly with all manner of food and drink and merry-making, but ere one hour had passed, the prince would lose his temper, and with the eternal complaint “but I do not have a combined planning tool!” would cut off his guest’s head

But Sir Defend-A-Lot surprised his host, and gave unto him a planning tool that the skillful engineers of the Kingdom of BMD had made especially for him, and the prince was well pleased with this gift, and he let him pass

And when our valiant knight continued on his way he came upon a flat and barren land, which was full of scattered bones and skeletons. This was the land of the formidable witch of connectivity. This witch would torment passers-by with all manner of exotic curses. For instance, she would say ‘may your clocks be unsynchronized’, and the poor passer’s by heart would start beating at a different pace than the rest of his body’s organs, and he would die a horrible death; or she could snap

her fingers (and scatter some blood from the corpse of a seventy-year old bat) and say ‘experience comms. delays’, and the passer-by would become immediately paralyzed, for the commands sent by his brain would fail to reach the body’s organs

But Sir Defend-A-Lot came prepared. He had with him the witch's favorite treat, which was lightly salted donkey’s ears, and into one ear he whispered “J 9.1: request for support”, and into the other ear he whispered “J 10.2: can’t comply”, and when the witch ate the ears she instantly became very confused and died there on the spot

So our knight rode on, on the path to perfect Interoperability, and reached a curve in the road near a high mountain, and in the side of the mountain there was the mouth of a cave, and in the cave could be seen a family of large and scary dragons, all asleep. ”These are the sleeping dragons known as the legacy systems”, the knight read aloud from the ‘Interoperability manual’ which the

King of BMD gave him prior to his departure. “you must avoid waking them at all costs, for once awakened, there is no known remedy to their vicious attack”

So Sir Defend-A-Lot took off his shoes, and his horse took off his hoofs, and together they walked on tip-toes past the lair of the sleeping dragons. And though one of them moved his tail and mumbled in his sleep, which gave them quite a scare, they managed to pass through that spot unharmed

Data Disclosure

Finally he came to the last barrier which stood on the border of the land of perfect Interoperability. This was a formidable fortress, which was known as “the fortress of data disclosure”. There was only a narrow footpath by which travelers could enter this fortress, and on both sides of this path stood two armed guards, and any one who wished to enter the castle would be asked “what information do you seek?”, and no matter what answer he would give, they would chop off his head. And Sir Defend-A-Lot reached the footpath, and as he set his foot upon the path he immediately started to recite a mantra which he learned from the swirling dervishes of the far distant land of Compromise, and this was the mantra which he recited: “I accept degraded performance as a result of lack of knowledge”. The two guards heard him continuously recite this mantra, and they let him pass

And then he came upon the high tower, where the Princess Link-Sixtina was held. And the princess was guarded by two fierce knights, one named “correlation”, and the other “coordination”

And Sir Defend-A-Lot did battle with them both and defeated them, for his sword was named “DPS”, and on his shield was written “TIS”, and he took the princess with him on his faithful horse, and headed home

And so, dear colleague, if you wish to set foot on the path to perfect Interoperability, you may learn from the exploits of brave Sir Defend-A-Lot:
