Directors’ Notes

The musical Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang is based on an original book by the same name written by renowned Canadian author Mordecai Richler and published in 1975. Young People’s Theatre debuted the first musical stage version of the story three years later. 2015 marks the 40th anniversary of the book’s launch and so we are thrilled to revive the show for YPT’s 50th season. Mr. Richler wrote a truly hilarious and insightful satire depicting arbitrary adult behavior and savvy children who want a say in the shape their lives take. For this year’s anniversary production, Britta and Anika Johnson have composed all new music in order to ensure that the musical tone of the show relates to young people today. Jacob Two-Two, like many six year olds, struggles with becoming independent and being heard. Children want autonomy - to be given credit for their abilities and to be family and community members in meaningful ways. With themes of secret heroes, standing up to bullies, friendship and collaboration, discovering bravery and pushing boundaries, this story of child empowerment is as relevant as ever. Parents and educators, be warned: your kids might come away from this musical comedy with a few demands! Every child has value in the world and this show delivers an important message about recognizing potential in everyone.

Young People’s Theatre (YPT) is very grateful to all of the individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies who contribute to our continued growth and success.

Education is vital to all children but not all learning takes place in the classroom. The dynamic and exciting theatre experiences that YPT has to offer promote creativity, critical thinking and confidence in young people.

Our donors enrich the life of children and youth by giving them access to the magic of live theatre and exceptional programming. The generosity of donors keeps YPT accessible for all young people and their families.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

Young People’s Theatre recently announced an extraordinary gift of $3 million from the Slaight Family for the creation of The Ada Slaight Education Centre at YPT.This gift will allow YPT to extend access to our shows and increase the number of Drama School bursaries for young people who might not have the means to attend or participate. It will also provide the opportunity for YPT to expand its participatory theatre programs in the community, its training programs, and its professional theatre apprenticeships.

•Join us at YPT’s Cultural Gym, a family friendly PWYC drama program on Wednesday evenings. Next session starts Nov 25th.

•YPT is conducting research with graduate students at the University of Toronto in the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy and in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

•We have started working with the Family Centre at SickKids to offer regular in-hospital programming.

•YPT is partnering with the Hincks-Delcrest Centre – Gail Appel Institute - to host their Parent Seminar Series. The first session is on December 1st.

•Book tickets for our Relaxed Performances, specifically designed for young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), on December 17th at 1PM or December 19th at 2:30PM.

Children from YPT’s Drama School program were asked this summer to use their imaginations and give us their perceptions of donor giving levels. We’ve compiled the results and have renamed some of our donor giving levels to reflect the children’s creative ideas.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S THEATRE (YPT) is the oldest professional theatre company in Toronto and is a national producer and presenter of theatre for young audiences - the first and largest of its kind in Canada. Over the past 50 years YPT has staged many of the most important plays that form the canon of work for youth in our country. YPT continues to develop new work and create partnerships with theatre companies across the country and around the world.

But that’s not all. The enriched learning experiences of YPT’s Education & Participation Department provide young people with opportunities to develop their whole being. Through our workshops in community shelters and agencies, educational initiatives in Toronto classrooms, Drama School programs in four locations throughout the City, and training and apprenticeship opportunities, we place learning at the centre of everything we do.

At Young People’s Theatre we strive for a positive and lasting impact on the emotional, social, and intellectual development of young people - giving them the chance to grow into the unique and wonderful people they were born to be.
