May Notes from Sunday school Mary Ann Proffitt, Christian Ed Director

Deep Sea Discovery: Diving into the Bible!

We just finished our last rotation of the year on Palm Sunday and only have a few Sundays left before the end of program year! Time sure flies! We’ll be finishing the year with a game day on April 28th,

where we will team up and play a variety of familiar games such as Apples to Apples and Monopoly with a Bible theme. On May 12th, we’ll be making Blessing Bags for Family promise! Finally, on May 19th, the last day of Sunday school, we’ll be having our pancake breakfast, so teachers and students should come hungry!!!

Preschoolers/Kindergarteners

. . . will be finishing the year learning how Jesus is powerful. How Jesus stops a storm, heals a young girl, feeds a crowd, and heals a blind man. They will be doing this through stories, making Thank-you Place Mats, making Bible Story Bags, water painting, and music. They will also be joining us for our pancake breakfast!

National Mission

We’re finishing our Sunday school mission work with our world mission. We’re raising money for World Vision for school supplies for children in other countries. The money that we raise will be multiplied 5x thanks to corporate donations. Our monies will be used to equip schools with things like teaching materials, textbooks, sports equipment, desks and more. For every dollar the students bring in they will put a school supply on the wall. The congregation will also be asked to help us with our mission as well!

Summer Sunday School

THAT’S SO COOL SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL will soon be here!! Pick up a schedule on the welcome table of the movies, life lessons and Bible stories we will be covering this summer! First day is Sunday, June 23rd with the Lion King movie, learning about courage and the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Vacation Bible School

Kids will become Voyagers on a journey through space, exploring where God's power can take them. Beginning in our gathering area-an outpost on Mars-kids will lift off to distant planets on special missions to collect power sources. Along the way, they'll learn how God walked with heroes of the Bible, and that God is always with them, too. Add to the adventure with out-of-this-world fun, great music, snacks/games/crafts, learning, and timeless Bible stories that inspire kids to give glory to God, who can do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine! Women’s Fellowship Sue Manzke, President

Here’s hoping you all had a wonderful Easter and will enjoy the flowers you

purchased. Thank you so much for helping beautify our Church!!

Our Pie Sale was a huge success! A

Big thank you to Toni Perez for all of her hard work on this event!! We were done selling by noon and our profit was $542.96. Thank you to those who baked pies at home and

brought them to church for the sale and also to those who worked in the kitchen with Toni and those who helped at the sale. Our pies are in high demand!! Some of you have probably already noticed . . . we have a new microwave in the

kitchen. The old one died the week of Baking Buddies . . . so Women’s Fellowship came to the rescue with a brand new one!!

Our plans are under way for our Second Annual

Special Olympics Awards

Dinner on Friday, May 17th . It truly is our pleasure

doing this for a wonderful group of people. Our menu of Spaghetti and Meatballs seems to be a fan favorite so we will repeat it. It seems a bit early for this . . . but we are also making plans for our Annual Fall Women’s Retreat...please

watch future Trumpets and Bulletins for more news on this fun and uplifting event.

Keep those fingers busy working on Hats, Mittens or Scarves for our

Tree that will go up mid-November.

We have really had some beautiful items to take to Hope Center for the needy folks in our Community.

Housekeeping: We’ve become more

involved with the community and several groups use our building and our kitchen . . . some of whom are

paying to use the space. We’ve noticed that several folks have become lax in how they put things away how they clean up the counters, sinks, refrigerator, freezer and ovens and

stove. Please be a little more aware and respectful of others by doing your part and please leave the kitchen like you found it or better!! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thanks a bunch!!!

We have signs posted to

NOT dump beverages in

the garbage cans . . . instead to dump them in the sink and then throw the cups away. That is still what we would like you to do . . . HOWEVER . . . please don’t leave a mess in the sink for someone else to clean up! Please rinse the liquid down and wipe the sink out with some paper towel. It becomes a really nasty and smelly mess that is hard to clean. So, let’s all take care of our own issues! Thanks so much!!!

Our next meeting will be on

Monday June 3rd, 2019 . . . bring a friend!!! Let’s see if each lady who has been coming can bring someone who has never come! Who knows...they might enjoy it!!

We need your help!

Women’s Fellowship is looking for some leadership help. It would involve a lot of organizational & prep work for various events & activities of the church as well as upkeep of the kitchen, etc. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in helping with, please contact Brigette in the church office for a list of items & “duties” that are typically covered by this volunteer position. Most likely a team of people will be needed to handle all that needs to be done, so grab a friend or two & let’s get you started today!

Family Fun Time Events Greg and Mary Ann Proffitt

Book Club

Come join us Tuesday, May 7th 6:30pm at church

Even if you don’t finish the book, you are welcome to join us! We will be discussing “The Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah. “Ernt Allbright, a former POW, comes home from the Vietnam war a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes an impulsive decision: he will move his family north, to Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.

Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future for her family. She is desperate for a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for

the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown.

At first, Alaska seems to be the answer to their prayers. In a wild, remote corner of the state, they find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the Allbrights’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.

But as winter approaches and darkness descends on Alaska, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates and the family begins to fracture. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own. In the wild, there is no one to save them but themselves.

In this unforgettable portrait of human frailty & resilience, Kristin Hannah reveals the indomitable character of the modern American pioneer & the spirit of a vanishing Alaska―a place of incomparable beauty & danger. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love & loss, the fight for survival & the wildness that lives in both man & nature.”

Come and enjoy an evening of discussion, dessert and a lot of fun! Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend!

Welcoming Ministry Ron Knutson

In last month’s article, I mentioned that the Welcoming Ministry Committee had made a monetary request to the Church council in the amount of $2500 that we then would give back to the community by making a monetary donation to:

DonorsChoose.org is a national organization that empowers public school teachers to request much-needed materials and experiences for their students. The request was granted at the March 11th council meeting. The committee then were asked to come to our March 19th meeting with at least 2 classrooms that they felt compelled to support. At that meeting, we took this information and selected several classrooms to support. We are also recommending that we as a congregation make a yearly commitment to this project through our benevolence giving.

Here is a list of the classrooms that we supported:

Calculating Success - Rufus King Middle School Grades 6-8 (kids impacted 160)

Unwinding our Thoughts about science fiction Wisconsin Conservatory-learning Grades 9-12 (impacting 50 kids)

The Write Foundation - Forest Home Avenue School Grades PreK-2 (impacting 90 kids) Fully funded by our donation

Young Authors Wanted – River Trail Elementary Grades 3-5 (impacting 25 kids) Fully funded by our donation

Here a book…There a book Lowell P Goodrich Elementary – Special needs Grades 1-5 (impacting 16 kids)

Helping SPED through sensory & visual supports Lowell P Goodrich Elementary Grades 3-5 (impacting 7 kids)

Therapy Games – George W Carver Academy Grades 3-5 (impacting 400 kids) Fully funded by our donation

Academic Artsy Activities – Siefert Elementary Grades PreK-2 (impacting 21 kids)

Crazy for Technology – Thurston Woods Elementary Grades PreK-2 (impacting 17 kids)

Science Hands on Extravaganza – Pierce Elementary Grades 3-5 (impacting 8 kids)

Through our congregation’s generosity we have impacted over 700 kids. THANK YOU ALL! This is an important first step in making a difference in our community. There is still much work to be done to assist those who are marginalized and oppressed. Jesus and his disciples seemed to always be working at the fringes of their faith community. Part of the Jewish community but not always welcome by it. We tend to forget that there are those around us who feel the same way. They would like to be part of the community but may be afraid of the welcome they might receive. Sometimes all it takes is an extended hand of welcome, a word of support or just a loving hug to make the difference in an individual’s outlook on life. We hope and pray that someday we can look beyond our embedded traditions as a Church and become what Jesus had envisioned. A faithful community of followers walking in his footsteps.
