SBSC HONORARY LIFETIME MEMBER AWARD
The SBSC Honorary Lifetime Member Award is a
service award. Club members are encouraged to
submit a nomination form for this award. The
membership then votes on the nominees and the
award is given at our annual Re-Up Party each
year. This Honorary Lifetime member receives
free membership to the club for the rest of their
life. The nominee should exemplify qualities that
distinguish him/her for other SBSC members for
their service and commitment to SBSC. It is the
highest honor that can be bestowed upon a mem-
ber. There will only be one member eligible for
this award each year. Nominations forms are available on the
website. All nominations must be re-
ceived no later than April 21. We will
vote on that date at our membership
meeting.

The Land Harbor Spring Boogie, Linville Land Harbor’s first shag dance in 2011, will be
held Saturday night, May 28th at the Recreation Center. All the profits from the dance will
benefit Grandfather Home for Children in Banner Elk. The dance will feature shag, line and slow
dancing and the deejay will be Steve Coley from Newton, NC. The dance will be from 7:30-11:00PM and the price of admission is $6 per person. A free
beginner shag lesson will be taught from 6:45-7:30 PM prior to the dance. Grandfather Home
for Children, founded in 1914, is a ministry that provides love and healing to more than 600
children and youth annually. The children in their care have experienced deep hurt and
trauma from neglect or abuse. The dance is limited to the first 160 dancers who make reservations. Dancers are encour-
aged to bring their own refreshments and snacks, and coolers are welcome. Ice will be pro-
vided. For more information or to make a reservation, please e-mail lisab-
[email protected] or call Joe or Lisa Samuel at 828-387-5585 or (336)984-1955. Two more Land Harbor shag dances will be held later this year, on July 30th and September
24th.
The SBSC is so very fortunate to have a great home. Many clubs
suffer because of not having a home base. The SBSC rents the hall
of the Morganton Elk’s Lodge on Thursday evenings, and on Sat-
urdays, which is our party night.
The Elks Lodge has always been very gracious to the shag club
and looks to us for monthly rentals. Our relationship with the
Elks is very stable and we look forward to our continued success
at the lodge.
With this being said, the Elks Lodge is growing as well. The House
Committee will be implementing new rules beginning April 1,
2011. The new rules will be listed below:
Note: If you are both an Elk and Sandy Beach Shag Club
Member, these rules do not apply to you.
The Lodge does provide a bar for us on Thursday nights. If
you would like to use the bar you are more than wel-
come. Please sign the register at the corner of the bar
before entering.
If you should have dinner at the lodge, you are required to
sign with a member. The SBSC has numerous members
that would gladly be your sponsor.
The lodge requires after three visits that you must join the
lodge. This does not include visits in the hall, shag par-
ties etc. To count as a visit, this would include having
dinner and/or socializing in the members section.
The Morganton Elk’s Lodge is a wonderful organization. We
are very active in the community. The Lodge has a won-
derful chef and we are a private club. Please ask for a
membership application at the bar or see me and I will

Inaugural Induction Ceremony for the Beach Music Hall of Fame
Sunday, May 15, 2011
In May 2009 the South Carolina General Assembly passed a resolution naming Coastal Carolina
University the official home of the Beach Music Hall of Fame. Recognizing that Beach Music is
an important part of the history and culture of the Grand Strand and South Carolina, it is most
fitting that the home will be in an educational venue. This in no way “competes” with the
Cammy’s (Carolina Beach Music Association).
This first class of inductees will honor songs and artists whose work debuted prior to
1955. The eight artists to be inducted are Hank Ballard, Ruth Brown, The Clovers, Fats Dom-
ino, The Drifters, Louie Jordan, Amos Milburn and Big Joe Turner. The ten songs to be enshrined are “Sixty Minute Man” (Dominoes), “Shake, Rattle and
Roll” (Big Joe Turner), “Ain’t That a Shame” (Fats Domino), “The Great Pretender” (The Plat-
ters), “Green Eyes” (The Ravens), “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean” (Ruth Brown), “Nip
Sip” (The Clovers), “One Mint Julep” (The Clovers), “White Christmas” (The Drifters), and
“Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee” (Sticks McGhee).
The late greats General Norman Johnson and Solomon Burke will also be honored at the cere-
mony. Advisory board members include Steve Bailey, Jason Cagle, Hilda Carter, Charles Dalton, Cliff
Ellis, Selene Graham, Pat Howle, Kay Maddox, Eddie Ray, Dan O’Reilly, Rose Rock, Billy Scott,
Don Sloan, Bubber Snow, Charles Stafford, Barry Thigpen, Dino Thompson, Jack Thompson,
Harry Turner and Bob Wood. This inaugural Induction Ceremony will be emceed by Billy Scott and Diane DeVaughn Stokes
and promises to be an entertaining few hours.
Tickets are available for $20 through Wheelwright Auditorium on the CCU campus where the
event will take place on Sunday May 15 at 6:00 P.M. by calling 349-2502.
SOS SPRING SAFARI
Each year at the end of April the coming of Spring is celebrated by
thousands of shaggers from all along the east coast. They hit the road in search of wild life. Their destination is the famous little strip
of sand known as the Grand Strand. After the long Winter, shaggers are eager for the first outing of the Summer. They find it
at the SOS Spring Safari.
For 10 days the biggest adult party on the East Coast crashes into North Myrtle Beach like an ocean wave. A wide variety of activities
is scheduled for the event. Many member clubs of the ACSC will schedule "tea parties" in the local lounges. The lounges themselves
schedule special parties during the Safari. Popular bands show up along Main Street playing crowd favorites. Shag dance instructors
will offer classes to the masses who are seeking to improve their skill or increase their repertoire of moves.
But the big attraction is the night life. As the sun goes down the
animals of the Safari come out to play in the clubs along Main Street
& OD. Old friends will seek each other out & new friends will be made. The night will be spent shag dancing to timeless music that
moves the soul.
On the last Saturday of SOS everyone meets on Main Street for the perennial favorite parade of the year, the ACSC Club's Parade.
ACSC member clubs plan, design, & build parade floats for fun & a chance to win one of the coveted awards. There are award catego-
ries for best shag theme & most original float. The Spring Safari Pa-rade always draws a huge crowd. Not only will the shaggers be out
in force, but the beach locals stream to the streets for an afternoon
of fun & laughter!
If you are ready for a little adventure maybe it is time for you to schedule a trip to the wilds of North Myrtle Beach. Maybe it is time
for you to join the party at the SOS Spring Safari.

A Message from the President
My first year of serving you as your President is about to end.
Let me start by saying that it is my intention to be your President
for the year 2011 and 2012 as well. We have accomplished a
great deal during this last year. We incorporated our Shag Club
in the State of North Carolina. We revised many of our proce-
dures including how we keep our books and how be keep track
of our parties. As much as it may have been a great deal to ask,
our door volunteers have done a fantastic job of using the com-
puter to help keep our records meaningful.
One of the most important things that we did was to give back
to the members of the Club. Your $20 membership bought you a
whole lot last year. From the Christmas dinner to the Shelton
Vineyard trip, to the free parties at Friday Friends, Sandy Beach
Shag Club strives to answer the question, “What do I get for my
$20.” What you really get is the friendliest people anywhere, that
love you like family, and stand by your side through life’s trials and
tribulations. People that laugh with you and cry with you and
dance with you. Yes, dance with you in one of the most poetic
movements that we will ever see. All while listening to the
most beautiful and soul capturing music on the face of this Earth.
No where that I have ever danced has a facility with the large
room, large dance floor, bar area, and fantastic bartenders like we
have at the Elks Lodge.
There are so many people to thank and I will not take up the
time to thank you all here. I would not be in this position if not
for our Past President Robin Morley. She and Susan Whisnant
took upon themselves the mission of making the New Sandy
Beach Shag Club, the best it could be. They have paved the way
for the people such as myself, to step easily into the office of
President of the Shag Club, and continue to serve you into the
future. I hope that as you read this, you will consider doing
something to make our shag club better than what it is today.
Page 10 Sandkicker
Page 11
Please consider running for office, or serving as a Committee Chairperson. Please
attend meetings and buy me free drinks ( Just making sure I haven’t lost you ear-
lier).
Our last party was a huge success. We had right at 200 people attend. We were
fortunate to have Helen Still, Chairperson of SOS with us, and her husband, Rod-
ney. It was a great moment in Sandy Beach Shag Club history. We honored the
lady that helped make this all happen, Robin Morley. To be nominated as a Shag
Icon is a true honor. We are blessed that one of our own is a Shag Icon.
Please don’t let our place in the sun fade like the beauty of a sunset. Make a dif-
ference. I promise you, it will change your life for the better
