The curriculum is divided into 3 interdependent modules addressing the following subjects through a hands-on approach: LEGAL & INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK POLITICAL & MILITARY CONTEXT COMMUNICATIONS IN HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS CONTEXT SECURITY BEHIND THE LINES AND IN WAR ZONES RISK ASSESSMENT ARMED & OTHER VIOLENT THREATS SECURITY FIRST AID IN HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS TRAUMATIC STRESS STRESS MANAGEMENT SAFETY Working in hostile environments and war zones requires a specific preparation, particularly from a security perspective. Only well trained media professionals can orient themselves in the field and work under extreme circumstances while managing to prevent and/or minimise personal risks. Accounts report that, over the last decade, physical attacks against journalists and other media workers have increased in number and gravity. Repressions, kidnappings, killings, disturbances to their work have been systematically carried out by regular armies, terrorist orga- nisations, drug-traffickers, extremist groups and other actors. Inspite of this, and as a result of general global trends, reporters and ad hoc contracted freelancers often deploy in the field lacking adequate pre- paration and organisational support. It is within this framework that this Course aims at transfering the ne- cessary expertise and preparation to be able to effectively work in hostile envirnments while reducing exposure to dangers and hazards.
