Pre-Admission Surgery InformationThe purpose of the pre-admission process is to ensure patients are well prepared for surgery or a procedure. This includes collecting medical history and required pre-procedural testing so the care you are provided is seamless, coordinated, safe and effective.

Preparation for surgery begins once your surgeon has scheduled your procedure. You will receive a phone call from a pre-admission nurse, usually within a week of your surgery being scheduled.

To avoid a possible cancellation and ensure your surgeon has your preoperative test results, please complete your lab tests at least 72 hours prior to surgery. We encourage you to complete your testing at our facility as results are conveniently available to your surgeon. However, if preoperative testing is done at another medical facility, please let the pre-admission staff know during your pre-admission phone call, so arrangements can be made to obtain your results.

Preparing for SurgeryThe day before your surgeryYou will receive a phone call from a nurse the day before surgery to discuss specific instructions and the important things to do and not to do the day before your surgery.

• DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight. This includes, coffee, water, hard candy and gum, unless otherwise indicated.

• Avoid alcoholic beverages, smoking and chewing tobacco within 24 hours of your scheduled surgery.

The day of your surgeryOn the morning of your surgery, our goal is to help make the day go smoothly for you and your family, and ensure a safe and seamless hospital experience.

Thank you for choosing Advocate Christ Medical Center for your outpatient surgery. We look forward to providing you with the best quality care our medical staff has to offer. In this guide, you will find answers to questions you or your loved ones may have about your upcoming surgery.

Please take time to review everything.

The following documents are required when you arrive for admission. Failure to bring these items could result in a delay or cancellation of surgery:

• Driver’s License or other legal photo identification (e.g., federally issued I.D.)

• Current insurance information

• A list of your current medications, including patches and inhalers

• Copies of any laboratory information provided to you

• Copies of any previous surgical or other medical records you may have

• Copy of HMO referral

We ask that you follow these guidelines:

• Bathe or shower the morning of surgery. Remove all makeup, hairpieces, jewelry including body piercings, and nail polish. Avoid applying lotion, deodorant or make-up.

• Bring a list of your medications (prescription, nonprescription and herbal), including dosage and frequency, and/or all of your medication bottles. A clinician will check your medications and return them to you.

• You may brush your teeth if no water is swallowed.

• If you wear glasses or contact lenses, please bring your case for their safekeeping.

• All artificial aids such as dentures, prostheses or hearing aids must be removed prior to surgery.

• Leave valuables at home. Please do not bring jewelry, large amounts of money, credit cards or other valuables with you. Advocate Christ Medical Center cannot be responsible for the loss or care of personal possessions.

Please arrive on time as instructed by the nurse during your pre-surgery consult.

After SurgeryRecoveryYou will be transferred to the recovery area immediately after your surgery or procedure.

Here’s what to expect after surgery:

• After your surgery, you will be transferred back to your room or a recovery room, where a nurse will frequently check your vital signs and monitor any postoperative pain you may have.

• Possible effects from anesthesia may include sore or dry throat, chills, sleepiness, nausea, vomiting or light-headedness.

• Following recovery, you will be transferred back to your room. Your family will be directed to meet you.

• After you wake from the anesthesia, your nurse will discuss your recovery and discharge plan.

• Don’t be alarmed if you feel dizzy when you first stand up. It’s not unusual to feel drowsy or a little dizzy for several hours after your operation, so ask for assistance before standing.

• Limit your activities for 24 hours after surgery. Avoid heavy lifting, pushing, and physical exertion or sports activities until cleared by your doctor.

Pain management If you experience pain after surgery, let your nurse know immediately. We want to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment for your post-surgical pain. Please take pain medication as directed. By keeping your comfort level consistent, you will be able to return more easily to normal activity and exercise.

Preparing to go home Your doctor will determine the best time for you to go home. Please make arrangements with an adult family member or friend who is available to drive you to and from surgery, wait in the family waiting area during the procedure and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. You cannot drive and we advise that you not be home alone during that time. Prior to being discharged, you and your family member and/or a friend will receive discharge instructions regarding recuperation, diet and medications.

Follow-up You will receive a follow-up call within 48 hours from a nurse. If you are unavailable, a voicemail message will be left for you. If any issues arise, please call your doctor’s office immediately.
