The 2014 Stetson squad includes four players who redshirted last year along with two transfers who sat out in 2013. The roster also includes 20 returning players who did not see enough varsity action to earn a letter and 37 true freshmen. The 2014 season will see the Hatters play one additional game. Stetson will again play Mercer this year, just as a non-conference opponent. The Bears left the PFL after just one season to join the scholarship Southern Conference. Several players who missed all, or most, of the 2013 season with in- juries are set to return in 2014. The group includes receiver Ryan Se- limos, defensive back Spencer Whittaker, running back Jason Willix and linebacker Joseph Morris. Some returning Hatters will be in new positions for the 2014 season. That group includes Devon Jones-Stewart, who has moved from de- fensive back to defensive end and Jack Howerton, who switched from defensive line to offensive line. The 2014 Hatters come from all over the country. Overall, there are players from 22 states on the Stetson roster. The Hatters come from as far away as Oregon and California on the west coast to Michigan and New York in the north. The Stetson coaching staff had a shakeup in the off-season. The re- sult is five new members to the staff. The newest Hatters coaches are Charles Huff (DL), Matt Diniak (RB), Tim Holt (OL), Jake Iodence (DB) and Jake Behrns (TE). They join returning coaches Tim Keating (WR), Brandon Wright (LB), Brian Young (DC) and head coach Roger Hughes, who also serves as offensive coordinator and QB coach. The Hatters will spend a lot more time on the road in 2014 than they did in 2013. Last year the team made five road trips with a total dis- tance of 5,334 miles round trip. This year, with six road games, the Hatters will tally more than 8,300 miles on the road. Prior to trips last year to Indianapolis (2,018) and Poughkeepsie, NY (2,232) last year, no Stetson football team had ever traveled further than to Louisiana, Kentucky and Virginia. This year the Hatters will make their longest trip (4,840 miles) to face San Diego. Stetson has four captains for th 2014 season. Hatter Notes Hard-hitting defender Glenn Adesoji has

moved from cornerback to “Dawg” safety for the 2014 season.

Cornernack Chris Atkins finished the 2013 season ranked fourth in the nation in in-terceptions with six. He has one this year.

Freshman Zach Allen is the furthest from home on the Stetson team. His home is Aloha, Oregon, is almost 3,100 miles from Stetson’s DeLand campus.

Freshman running back Harold Antor is the only Hatter from outside the U.S. An-tor grew up in The Bahamas.

Chris Crawford returned to the Stetson team after leaving the program following the 2013 season. Crawford had intended to transfer but, after months of soul search-ing, decided to return to Stetson. He was the Hatters leading receiver in 2013 with 33 receptions, totalling 332 yards.

Freshman quarterback Gaven DeFilippo, who is one of four Hatters from Arizona, comes from an athletically accomplished family. He has a cousiin who is an assis-tant coach with the Oakland Raiders and another cousin who recently retired as the Director of Athletics at Boston College.

Freshman offensive lineman Jared Glea-son is the nephew of Stetson University Associate VP Paul Gleason.

The Hatters have seven players on the roster from Volusia Country. That group includes Jake Ohlwein, Mitch Lane, Ethan Simpson, Austin Tyrrell, Taylor Dunn, Dev-on Jones-Stewart and Jonathan Strahl.

Dunn is the son of Stetson’s Hall of Fame baseball coach Pete Dunn. Both wear jer-sey number 25.

Stetson has five players with ties to Cali-fornia, but two will be especially excited for the trip to San Diego. Both Ignacio Madrid and Tristan Juarez are Sand Diego area natives.

Freshman Ja’Vonta Swinton missed virtu-ally all of training camp after having an allergic reaction to food his first day on campus.

Sophomore safety Ryan Powers led all of FCS in 2013 with six forced fumbles.

Two of the newest Stetson players, receiv-er Chris Lykins and tight end Brock Turner, started school during the spring semes-ter in order to go through spring practice.

No fewer than 54 members of the Stetson football team have close relatives who also competed, or are currently compet-ing, in college athletics or professional sports. The total number of relatives in sport are: father (22), uncle (21), cousin (19), brother (9), grandparent (8), mother (5), sister (3) and aunt (1).

Three members of the Stetson football coaching staff have NFL experience. Charles Huff played for the 49ers and Falcons in the 1980s. Matt Diniak worked on the coaching staff for the Buccaneers from 2005-08 and Tim Holt coached for the Bucs (2009-11) and Bears (2012).

Hatter CaptainsThe Hatter football team has selected four captains for the 2014 season, QB Ryan Tentler, RB Mike Yonker, DB Donald Payne and DB Ryan Powers.

Tentler has become the unqestioned lead-er of the Stetson football team during his two-plus years on campus. He provided the following assessments of his fellow captains.

“Mike was a little shy to start with, but he coomes up with some great ideas.”

“Powers is the mediator. He is a good speaker.

“Donald was more of an on-field captain last year, but I have asked him to do more, to speak up more. He is doing that.”

“Coach Hughes has handed the team over to us because it is our team. We get a lot more respect now than we did last year.”

Head Coach Roger Hughes

Roger Hughes is the ninth different head coach in Stetson football history.

With Stetson’s 2013 win over Warner, the nine Hatter head coaches have combined to go 7-2 in their debut contests.

Before coming to DeLand, Hughes al-ready had 10 years of head coaching ex-perience, posting a 47-52 mark at Princ-eton from 2000-09.

Hughes’ Tigers shared the 2006 Ivy League title, going 9-1 overall and 6-1 in “the ancient eight”.

Hughes has previously served as an assis-tant with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL and collegiately at Dartmouth, Cam-eron, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Nebraska and, his alma mater, Doane College in Crete, Nebraska.

Hughes graduated from Doane in 1982 after playing both football (tight end) and golf.

About The Bears Also in their second season of football,

Mercer set an NCAA record in 2013 for most wins by a first year program with 10.

The Bears have 21 of 22 starters back from last year, with the only new starter being at right tackle on the offensive line.

Sophomore QB John Russ, who was the PFL Offensive Freshman of the Year last year, is off to a good start with a 166.3 QB rating to lead the Southern Conference.

Mercer is very much a home-grown team. Of the 90 players on the Bears’ roster, 63 are from Georgia.

Mercer does have 14 players from Florida, including one, K Jagger Lieb, from Port Or-ange.

LB Tyler Ward set a school record with 18 tackles against Furman last week.

PFL/National Honors

Donald Payne picked up right where he left off in 2013 by earning the first PFL Defensive Player of the Week award for 2014. Payne returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and had an interception in the Hatters’ 35-16 victory over Warner.

The award was Payne’s third in just 12 games.

Payne was also named the College Sports Madness PFL Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Warner.

Sophomore kicker Grant Amick earned the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week award for week one, thanks to his school record 48-yard field goal. Amick hit 2-of-3 FG attempts in the win over Warner and was also 2-of-2 on PAT kicks.

HattersNotebook

Stetson’s victory over Warner was the football program first road victory since Sept. 27, 1952 at what was then known as Northeast Louisiana State (now Louisi-ana-Monroe), in Monroe, La. The Hatters won that day 40-20.

The 35 points scored in the game at Warner surpassed the most the Hatters scored in any game last year. The season-high for points in 2013 was 34 in a 49-34 loss to Birmingham-Southern.

The last time Stetson scored more than 35 points in a game was Nov. 7, 1953, in a 41-0 home victory over Morehead State.

The Hatters got a hand on at least three kicks (two punts and a PAT) and severely affected another on Saturday. The three blocks equaled Stetson’s total of blocked

kicks from the 2013 season. Freshman Austin Bess blocked a punt

on the fourth play of the game, allowing Donald Payne to scoop up the loose ball and go 25 yards for a touchdown. It was Payne’s third career defensive touchdown.

The second game of the year also pro-duced a defensive score for Stetson. Sophomore Marlin Hall found the end zone for the first time in his career on a 77-yard fumble return.

Overall, the Hatters have scored seven touchdowns on defense or special teams through 13 games since the program was re-started. The touchdowns have come on two blocked punts, a fake field goal, three fumble recoveries and an interception.

The Hatters blocked their second punt late in the first half to set up another scor-ing drive. Ryan Powers got credit for the block, the second of his career.

In addition to his blocked punt return for a score, Donald Payne also recorded his first interception of the season in the second quarter. It was Payne’s third career interception.

The Hatters used three different kickers in the game. Freshman Jordan Acham kicked off to open the night, Grant Amick was 2-of-3 on field goal attempts, includ-ing a school-record 48 yarder, and was good on two PAT kicks, and James La-Gamma kicked off twice, was good on one PAT and punted three times.

Penalties were a problem in the opening game for both teams. Stetson, which was the least penalized team in FCS last year, was flagged nine times for 86 yards while Warner was penalized 15 times for 154 yards in the game. The nine penalties against the Hatters equaled the season high from 2013, which also came against Warner, and the 86 yards surpassed the season-high of 80, which also came against the Royals.

Stetson had just two first-time starters in

the 2014 season-opener. Receiver Ryan Selimos, who missed the entire 2013 sea-son with an injury, made his collegiate debut in a start. Defensive tackle Shayne White, who played as a backup in 2013, also made his first start.

The 30 points allowed by the Hatters in the first quarter to FIT were by far the most the team has allowed in any quarter. The most points scored by any team in a quarter in 2013 was 21, which happened three times.

Stetson set a new program low for pass-ing yards in a game, throwing for just 57 yards against the Panthers. The low dur-ing the 2013 season with 84 yards against San Diego.

The 172 yards of total offense in the game against FIT was the third fewest for the Hatters. The team managed just 161 yards against San Diego last year and just 131 yards against Marist.

Two players who had seen action in all 13 previous games for the Hatters missed the FIT game with injuries. Both punter James LaGamma and running back Mike Yonker missed the game.

Junior quarterback Blake Plattsmier made his Stetson debut in the FIT game, and ac-counted for one of two Hatters scores in the game, diving into the end zone on a five yard run.

So far this year the Hatters have had 27 players make their varsity debuts. That list includes: K Jordan Acham, DB Zach Allen, LB Austin Bess, RB Craig Carrington, LB Ed-die Curry, DB Devin Davis, DL Jeffrey Fal-label, RB P.J. Franklin, RB Devin Gillotte, OL Jared Gleason, LS Gary Gotling, DB Chance Jackson, LB Mason Johnson, WR Chris Lykins, DB Eric Martin, DL Chris Micoff, LB Joseph Morris, QB Blake Plattsmier, DB Delvin Riley, DL Anthony Ryals, LS Ethan Simpson, DB Ja’Vonta Swinton, WR Brock Turner, TE Austin Tyrrell, RB Kimo Vereen, OL Charles Wallace and WR Darian Wright.

Strong Second Half Leads Hatters Past Warner LAKELAND, Fla. – After a sluggish opening quarter to the 2014 season, the Stetson Hatters came to life in the second quarter, scoring 25 unanswered points en route to a 35-16 season-opening victory over Warner in front of 1,213 fans at Lakeland Christian School. It was special teams that set the stage for much of the Stetson offensive success. The Hatters blocked two punts in the first half and forced another punt that covered just seven yards. Stetson also blocked a PAT kick in the second half. The only negative on special teams was allowing a 90-yard kickoff return to Warner in the third quarter. The first block, following the opening possession of the game, resulted in a 25-yard Donald Payne return for a touchdown. Freshman Austin Bess was credited with the block. Warner answered with 10 straight points to end the first quarter – a seven-play, 73-yard, drive was capped by a 12-yard scoring run from quarterback Darrin Davis and a seven-play, 23-yard, drive that re-sulted in a 37-yard Brian Abrams field goal – before the Hatters went on a run. First Ryan Tentler connected with Chris Craw-ford on a perfectly thrown 19-yard scoring strike to put Stetson on top 14-10. Three minutes later, Tentler capped a short 31-yard drive follow-ing the short punt with a 22-yard TD run. Ryan Selimos ran in the con-version for a 22-10 lead. Cole Mazza got into the scoring act with a 1-yard TD plunge with 4:44 left in the half to cap an 11-play drive covering 73 yards. The final points of the half came after the second blocked punt, this one by Ryan Powers. Despite penalties that threatened to thwart the scoring chance, Grant Amick hammered a knuckeball field goal through the uprights from a school-record 48 yards out to give the Hat-ters a 32-10 lead at intermission. The second half, however, did not play out like the first. The Hatters got a short field goal from Amick midway through the third quarter, and Warner responded by returning the kickoff for a touchdown. That was all the scoring for the night.

“It is our first road win in the his-tory of the program, so I am happy. But, we didn’t score a touchdown after halftime. I thought we got complacent in the third quarter and made too many mistakes that stoped drives. Frankly, we have to find a killer instinct in the third quarter.” - Head Coach Roger Hughes

Hatters Drowned by Panthers in Home Opener DeLAND, Fla. – The dreary weather was not the only thing that put a damper on the Stetson Hatters’ 2014 home-opener Saturday night at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. The visiting Florida Tech Panthers hit the field with the vengeance of a hurricane, scoring 30 points in the first 10:31 of play to completely swamp the Hatters. Things settled down after initial barrage before FIT settled for a 54-12 victory over Stetson. Rain began to fall while the teams were warming up for the game, but the deluge really got underway after the Hatters kicked off to start play. FIT redshirt freshman quarterback Mark Cato had the opening quarter of his life, throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more in the first minutes of his first game. The stunning performance started on the second play of the game when Cato connected with Xavier Milton on a 69-yard TD pass just 45 seconds into the game. For the Hatters, things went downhill from there. Cato con-nected on scoring throws of 69 and 33 yards to Milton and nine and 18 yards to Aaron George. His TD runs came from 10 and eight yards out. The Panthers also got field goals of 33 and 27 yards from kicker Brion Ashley. On the other side, the Hatters quarterbacks did not fare as well. Starter Ryan Tentler, who wore jersey number 20 in the game in honor of a high school teammate who recently passed away, had his worst game as a Hatter. He completed just five of 10 throws for 25 yards and lost 11 yards on his four rushing attempts. Overall, the three quarterbacks who played in the game for Stet-son – Jonathan Jerozal and Blake Plattsmier also saw action – complet-ed just 8-of-20 pass attempts for 57 yards. The trio also combined to run the ball 15 times for 13 yards. The Hatters finally were able to give the home crowd of 4,042 some-thing to cheer about in the fourth quarter when sophomore Marlin Hall scooped up a Davis Fluker fumbled and raced 77 yards for a touchdown. Plattsmier, a junior college transfer, also found the end zone when he guided a nine-play, 75-yard drive and capped it with a five-yard TD run.

“Blitzed and pummeled, we just got our butts beat, that is all that you can say. We couldn’t stop the run and we couldn’t run the ball. We executed like we hadn’t practiced in five weeks. It is absolutely surprising to me that we could do so many things wrong.”- Head Coach Roger Hughes
