Welcome to Seacoast Repertory Theatre’s 2021 season! We would like to take a moment to express our immense gratitude for you, our audience. Without your support, our doors would not be open, and we would not be one of the only theatres in the nation to stay in operation, serving our community throughout the entire pandemic.

As we began to develop our 2021 season, we saw a common thread emerging that we also saw mirrored in the world around us. In this past year, we have seen our communities struggling with a pandemic, yes, but perhaps even more widespread than that, struggling with addiction, suicide, mental health and the everyday navigation of a complicated reality. We have seen friends and family members falling into deep despair over the state of the world, confronting change and challenges previously unknown to this generation. At the same time, we have seen the arts, and the performing arts in particular, put on the nation’s backburner, as if art is a lesser priority than other necessities.

As human beings we strive for a sense of normalcy, we long for escape, we long for the oasis that is art, and culture, and the profound human expression that is the shared experience of live theatre. As we watch our friends, our families, our peers struggle with depression and isolation, and we talk to the patrons that have shared in the art we have offered throughout the pandemic, we know that theatre should never be considered optional, or expendable. Furthermore, it is our RESPONSIBILITY, as artists, to continue to offer that profound, cathartic experience to the public. Throughout history, in times of darkness, it has been the artists that have led the way, and spoken truth, and ushered in new ways of thinking, keeping the flame in humanity’s heart alight when it seems like there is only night.

Seacoast Repertory Theatre’s 2021 season features stories of mental health struggles, stories of growing up and facing adulthood and the “real world”, of finding family, connection, and magic in the darkest of nights. Stories of hope, and of overcoming our own inner obstacles. These stories are mirrored by our very real belief in our power, as a light in our community, to be that star in the night sky, and pull up humanity with the uplifting power only live theatre art can offer. With all of this in mind, we are calling this season “2021 - Recover”. Not just for the recovery of the theatre after the massive financial hit this past year has been, but also the recovery of our emotional, mental and spiritual well-being as a community and as a species on this planet. In 2021 we are promoting a message of emotional health, and partnering with seacoast organizations that focus on suicide prevention, recovery from addiction, and the mental and emotional well-being of the community. These organizations have provided resources in our lobby, for you or anyone you know who just needs a bit of a helping hand. You are not alone!

As we continue to rely on you, the community that has believed in and supported us throughout 2020, please rely on us, and know that we believe in YOU! We are here for you, whenever you need a moment of pause, or a new world to explore, or a bit of that catharsis that seems to have a way of clearing the mind and cleansing the soul. We can make it through anything, as long as we do it together.

Did You Know? The FBI circulated the following memo after King's "I Have a Dream" Speech:In the light of King’s powerful demagogic speech yesterday he stands heads and shoulders over all other Negro leaders put together when it comes to influencing great masses of Negros. We must mark him now, if we have not done so before, as the most dangerous Negro of the future in this nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro, and national security. Najee Browns’ Stokley and Martin tells a story of a prophetic conversation that took place in 1967 between Martin Luther King Jr., Stokley Carmichael, Willie Ricks, and Cleveland Sellers.Stokley Carmichael was a prominent organizer of the civil rights movement and a major voting rights activist who was inspired by Malcom X. He was a leader in the Black Power movement, as well as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and was one of the original SNCC freedom riders of 1961.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist Minister well-known for his non-violent leadership role in the Civil Rights movement and was president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). J Edgar Hoover considered King a radical who was influenced by Communists and subjected him to FBI surveillance.

Willie Ricks and Cleveland Sellers both supported the SNCC, the Black Power movement, voter registration, the Black Panther movement and more.

This play takes place during the turbulent 1960s when Black folks were killed because of the racial hatred that was openly expressed and commonplace in many communities throughout the U.S. during those times. As I read the script and began shaping this play, from time to time I had to fight back tears because we are still fighting these same battles today. It is a tragedy that racial injustices, hatred and bigotry still exist in this country.

During the process of getting this show on its feet, I was reminded of how exciting it was to be a part of the Najee Brown’s Sol Series. I had the pleasure of recently playing the part of Deborah in his play The Bus Stop, with an all-black female cast.

Now, I have the opportunity to direct another Najee play, working with an all-black, and predominately male cast. It’s wonderful to be involved with a playwright who writes strong, intellectual roles for actors of color.

Our goal as a people should be to eliminate racism. By providing teachers with proper resources we can educate and enlighten our youth. By providing law enforcement with necessary training to deescalate situations, eliminate racial profiling and reform our prison system, we can make our communities free of fear and injustice. Educating families on equality, justice and the importance of not judging someone by the color of their skin is imperative. To work together as a people. To continue to dialog so both sides can understand and care for one another. To overcome racist ideologies taught to our youth. All this is possible.

I’m proud to share this message and have the opportunity to direct Stokley and Martin.

Najee Brown has done it again. Najee stepped on the scene with his debut play “ The Bus Stop.” A play about five black woman at a nobility bus stop. This all black cast, black writer, and blackdirector took the seacoast by surprise. Nevaeh’s Brother is no different as the words dance through your mind the message plays the mu-sic of honor, nobility, freedom and control over and over in your head.

Najee and the Sol Series has brought a unique perspective to help open up honest and real conversation to help people better understand systematic racism that has plagued our country for decades. Nevaeh’s Brother is a beautifully written piece of art that navigates you though the heart of a young black man. A young man who is a product of our society and after 30 plus year takecontrol of his life.

I was honored when he asked me to direct “Nevaeh’s Brother” is a story about a young black man and his sister who live in New York City. The story is about joy and pain, truth and lies, chaos and control, life and death, but most of all freedom.

“Is there a difference between being alive and living”? Some might feel this question is answered in this play. As we look at life though the lens of a young black man and women. A man who felt counted out his whole life. His whole life under the control of others, never feeling free to be who he was meant to be. He spends most of his life in and out of jail he has two children with a woman he is not living with. Recently released from prison he struggles to stay whole and out of trouble.

“There is safety and security in being in control” This is Nevaeh motto always had it together on the outside. Nevaeh is beautiful, strong, confident, but deep inside her whole world is falling apart. The death of her mom, failed relationship, and her constant worry about her brother has turned her life upside down. She is out of control for the first time in her life Over a home cook meal, photos, and music it is uncovered that Nevaeh wants to leave withplans to go back to Africa and Brother has a perfect plan to take back con-trol of his life too.

In the United States, the National Alliance on Mental Illness estimates that almost 1 in 5 adults experience mental health problems each year. In 2017, an estimated 11.2 million adults in the U.S., or about 4.5%, had a severe psychological condition, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. With mental health already needing additional government support throughout the United States, the current pandemic and its constraints have only intensified these challenges. The isolation of being at home, family stressors or personal stressors without the network received through one's “normal” pre-pandemic life is a significant barrier, creating chronic problems for adults and children alike. One of the most significant ways the pandemic has exacerbated mental health is that it has immersed people even more in a virtual world which breeds anxiety and low self-esteem, both of which in turn can manifest into forms of mental illness.

“Next to Normal,” at its core is about a family navigating survival in uncertainty. Something we all might be able to identify with more than ever. But in a world where a mother struggles with bipolar disorder and a family tries to manage her illness, we indeed find hope. In the lyrics so brilliantly written by Brian Yorkey in this show, “And you find out you don’t have to be happy at all to be happy you’re alive,” we see that the simple things in life are worth taking pause for even when one might feel like they are gripping onto air.

It would be naive and insensitive for me to expand further on the challenges associated with mental illness when I personally haven’t endured the pain others have so acutely experienced. I can only speak as an advocate and supporter of encouragement to bring awareness to mental health and mental illness. By using our voices to fight against the stigma and raising awareness we can ensure compassion, stronger community and support for those who need it.

“Our societal perception of mental health, including mental illness, will not change if we do not take action to change it ourselves.”- Kristen Fuller, M.D.
