EARLY DESIGNS FOR THE 12 KILOMETRE LIGHT RAIL PROJECT FROM THE CITY TO GUNGAHLIN WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT DURING THE NEXT FEW WEEKS AS PART OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM THAT STARTED WITH THE OPENING OF A POP-UP SHOP BY THE MINISTER FOR CAPITAL METRO, SIMON CORBELL.

Community invited to comment on Light Rail City to Gungahlin

The Capital Metro pop-up shop is located on Mort Street in the CBD.

"This is the first opportunity for the community to see what light rail in Canberra might look like and I would encourage everyone to visit the pop-up shop, look at the proposed design and provide feedback," Minister Corbell said.

"As this is an early design, no decisions have been made on the final product, so this is the most opportune time to influence the end design."

The design proposal has been created based on in-depth planning and builds on previous community feedback.

As well as the pop-up shop, information sessions will also be held in Gungahlin and Dickson shopping centres at various times through July and August.

"The feedback provided during the consultation will feed into next stages of design that will provide the basis for expressions of interest later this year.

"It is vital the community take the opportunity to provide their feedback on how they would like the system to look and operate.

"Light Rail will deliver so much more than a transport benefit for Canberra and this is why the ACT government has been so intent on planning for the future and is committed to delivering city-changing infrastructure. We look forward to hearing what the community has to say about these designs."

All information regarding the design proposal, information sessions and the opening hours of the pop-up shop is available at the Capital Metro website.

Representatives from the Capital Metro Group met with Master Builders ACT members on 1 July with a view to obtaining feedback on the early designs for the Stage 1 design of the Light Rail project (city to Gungahlin). An engagement program and the types of elements they are looking for feedback on will include:

• The alignment and stop locations;

• The urban design approach;

• The approach to landscaping, including considerations for the entry to Canberra; and

• Light Rail operations and infrastructure.

In addition to this Capital Metro will seek feedback from the broader community on early designs across four areas:

• Strategic approach – the policy and planning principles guiding the project;

• The passenger experience – what you can expect as a light rail passenger in Canberra;

• Urban design – how the corridor will look and feel with the light rail;

• Nuts and bolts – what we are building, the specifications and how it will work.

The land covers 1600 hectares surrounded on three sides by the Murrumbidgee River and Ginninderra Creek, with the Brindabella Mountains as a dramatic backdrop.

West Belconnen will be a major project over 30 years, ultimately delivering about 11,500 homes for 30,000 people. It will offer exceptional land and building opportunities.

The project is now undergoing rezoning in both the ACT and NSW, and is therefore at a stage where the developers, Riverview Projects (acting as project managers for the LDA), can engage with builders to provide some early insights and listen to the aspirations of builders for the West Belconnen project.

Riverview Projects in conjunction with MBA-ACT are conducting a special breakfast and information presentation to members at 7.00am on 14 August.

Overview and opportunities

Following breakfast, David Maxwell, Tony Carey and Steve Harding of Riverview Projects will provide an overview of the proposed draft master plan and builder opportunities. The vision is for a sustainable, inspiring and vibrant community of international significance, incorporating widely diverse, modern housing with sustainability at its core.

Consumer insights

In addition, Rodney Latimer of Orima Research will offer insights into the latest consumer motivations and trends from a recently completed study and analysis commissioned specifically for this project. And Niva Pryor of Potent Marketing will provide a snapshot of the branding work done so far.

Builder feedback

As well as keeping you informed about the project, Riverview Projects are also keen to hear your thoughts and ideas, so we urge you to come along and get involved.
