What is an API Gateway? An API Gateway is a runtime designed and optimized to host an API or to proxy a connection to an API deployed to another runtime. The gateway performs a number of functions critical to running and managing APIs. First, the API gateway serves as a point of control over APIs. It allows you to control which traffic is authorized to pass through the API to backend services, to meter the traffic flowing through, to log all transactions, and to apply runtime policies to enforce governance like rate limiting, throttling, and caching. In addition to these core functions, some gateways do more than host or proxy APIs – they integrate APIs with the backend services that power them. An API is just an interface that calls functionality living in a service or application, and unless that functionality lives in a well-defined web service, integration and orchestration capabilities are required to connect it to the API

Pre-requisites

• Download on-premise API Gateway runtime– http://www.mulesoft.com/ty/dl/api-gateway

• Mule runtimes require JDK 7 or 8. For JDK– http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

• Anypoint Platform accountRegister anypoint platform account here– https://anypoint.mulesoft.com/

• Download Anypoint Studio (optional)– https://www.mulesoft.com/lp/dl/studio

Register API Gateway to Anypoint Platform

• Login to your anypoint platform account.• Click on Cloudhub menu• Click Servers in the left side menu• Click Add Server• Click the Copy button

Page 6: On-Premise API Gateway

• Open terminal and cd to your <api gateway runtime directory>/bin– e.g. /work/demo/runtime/api-gateway-standalone-2.2.0/bin

• Enter the copied script from anypoint studio. – e.g. ./amc_setup -H df456c25-ebcs-4fc7-be90-25fb4087ef96---918 server-nameThe key there is what peers your on-premise setup to your online Anypoint Platform account.

• See the newly added server in your server list, the status is possibly disconnected

• Run your api gateway– e.g ./gateway consoleWait for it to start

• Check the server status again, it should be running now.
