St Mark’s Church, Worsley: workingtowards the “Child Friendly Church Award” status

St Mark’s Church is aiming to achieve the“Child Friendly Church Award”. The schemerecognises the importance of the child’s presence at the heart of the Christian Community. All-age worship is a vital buildingblock in a church’s growth and provides anopportunity for more people to get involved.

Any church which achieves the Award isgiven a Child Friendly Church logo to displayon its no0ce board so that families visi0ng orwho are new to the area will know childrenare welcome.

At St. Marks we hold Children’s Church sessionsevery Sunday at 10.30am during term 0me. Itis open to children from the age of 3.5 years.

Activities are based around a reading or message from the bible. We learn in a funand interactive way through a mix of artsand cra!s, games, prayers and songs.

Children are also involved in special paradeservices in church and have the opportunityto do readings, prayers and songs.

Our vision is to lead, nurture and encourageall children in the word of the Lord, to listen, understand and to give children a voice inthe church.

We welcome you and hope you can join us.

8 ON OUR DOORSTEP

A stroll aroundRoe GreenAfter the inevitable “overeating” at ChristmasDinner, why not take a leisurely walk around RoeGreen and contemplate its history.

Roe Green is a picturesque village with awealth of history. Here is a brief insight intoits past and some of the local landmarks.

IN THE BEGINNING...Roe Green is thought to have been namedafter “Roe Deer” which used to roam thearea. The name occurs on the first knownmap of Worsley c.1590.It is in fact the original Village Green forWorsley, first mentioned in relation to aland dispute between Gilbert Sherrington ofWardley Hall and Richard Brereton ofWorsley (who inherited Worsley in 1570).

The Green was used as common land, anopen space that could be used for grazing. It was also used for sporting activities, inparticular Cricket, in the Victorian era. Thehamlet grew around the green, where cottages were built by the Duke ofBridgewater. Inhabitants were employed inlocal mines, agriculture and handloomweaving. Up to the 20th century Roe Greenwas a 'working class' village, centred arounda chapel, school and Co-op:-

INDEPENDENT METHODIST CHURCHThe Methodist Church first came to RoeGreen in 1808, with Humphrey Harperstanding on a stone preaching to largecrowds. The first church was built in 1855and then rebuilt in 1884 which is the chapelwe see today.

Independent Methodists believed inabstaining from alcohol, which gave RoeGreen the reputation of being a dry village......hence the absence of pubs in Roe Green.

ROE GREEN INFANTS SCHOOLThe building which is now Beesley GreenCommunity Centre began life as Roe GreenInfants School. It was built in 1892 andclosed in 1968. This was an extension to theoriginal school (white cottages next door),which was built in 1727 to provide bothschoolroom and schoolmaster’s house. Itwas used as a Sunday and day school.

ROE GREEN CO-OPThe first Roe Green Co-op opened in 1858,in two rooms of a cottage, operating in theevenings. The Coop then grew to purposebuilt premises on Greenleach Lane, which isnow home to Hair Eden. It was the 3rd andlast Roe Green Co-op. The top story was asewing room and the hoist to get provisionsinto the building can still be seen at the back.

an Independent Methodist, built a largeextension onto the original Sisley Cottagecalled “Littlewood”. The ground floor was acotton warehouse and first floor a PreachngRoom for the Independent Methodists, where they were to stay for the next 30 yrs.By 1836 he had 260 Sunday School Scholarsattending, many walking miles to attend.

3) Former Poor House next to Roe GreenCricket Club. Built in 1752 as an extension tothe original school to educate poor boys - abequest left in 1716 by one Thomas Colllier.

4) “Aigburth”, Lumber Lane, oppositeLittlewood. Built using the proceeds of theJ.T. Tyldesley County Benefit in 1906. TheTyldesley family lived here on retiring fromtheir shop in Roe Green. It was named afterLiverpool’s cricket ground “Aigburth” whereErnest Tyldesley’s made his county debut.

5) Dinamics Hairdresser, Greenleach Lane. This was the former house of the Tyldesleyfamily and birth place of Ernest Tyldesley.

“In fond and grateful memory of HerbertLyon Tyldesley MBE, Bert, a gentleman, writer and local historian and last Tyldesleyof the famous cricketing family to live onRoe Green....But through it all I left my heartwhere it was plainly seen, midst the fieldsand woods and people in the village of RoeGreen.”

Many thanks to Pauline & Jean from Friends of RoeGreen for providing material for this feature. Othersources include Salford Council & Visit Salford websites

BEESLEY GREENOriginally Beesley Green was the westernend of Roe Green, an integral part of RoeGreen, It consisted mainly of farms. BeesleyGreen was named after the Beesley familywho farmed there for several generations.

In 1864, the Manchester-Wigan Railway cutthrough the area separating Beesley Greenand Roe Green.

CONSERVATION AREAThe railway provided an incentive to buildnew housing developments. In the 20thcentury roads were to open up the villageeven more.

The East Lancashire Road was opened in1934, and later the arrival of the motorwaymade Roe Green an easily accessible anddesirable place to live. Further housingdevelopment brought new residents.

To preserve the “village green” character ofthe area, Roe Green/Beesley Green was designated a conservation area in 1970 andis Salford’s largest conservation area.

BLUE PLAQUESIn 2007, five Blue Plaqueswere erected on buildingsaround Roe Green, recognising individualswho have made a significant contribution in

the area. You may have seen them, they arelocated:-

TREAT YOUR BODY TO A 7-DAY DETOX

Now that the Festive season is behind you, are you feeling in need of a boost? This 7-Day detox plan will give your liver a rest, re-energise you and help youshed a few pounds.

Foods to Exclude• Tea and coffee. The caffeine in these drinks is a strong stimulant. Instead, drink fruit or herbal teas, or chicory/dandelion coffee

• Sugar, honey, syrup & foods containing added sugar like fizzy drinks• Salt and highly salted or smoked food such as bacon, smokedfish, crisps, stock cubes and soy sauce, plus many ready-meals. Use lo-salt, black pepper, herbs, garlic and ginger for adding flavour

• Alcohol• Wheat and wheat-based products like flour, most cereals, bread, pasta. Wheat is a common source of food intolerance, so try miso, oats, spelt or millet flour as an alternative

• Dairy produce eg milk, cheese, butter, yoghurt. Try soya milk and yoghurt instead

• Eggs and egg products• Red meat and non-organic white meat• Artificial food additives including sweeteners

Foods to Include• Fruit and unsweetened fruit juices• Vegetables• Fresh fish and oily fish like salmon, tuna and sardines canned in water or tomato sauce

• Beans and lentils• Tofu and quorn• Potatoes, brown rice and rice noodles• Oats, rye crackers and oatcakes• Unsalted nuts and seeds• Extra virgin olive oil• Water – at least 2 litres per day

The programme is not highly restrictive and won’t leave you short on nutrients, but you willneed to avoid a number of foods which can stress your body.

In addition to your diet, try to take time out for yourself to lower your stress levels. Get some exercise out in the fresh air or visit the gym, soak in a bath to which you haveadded Epsom or mineral salts or get a lymphatic massage.

And if you’re brave enough have a cold water blast at the end of your shower in the morningto re-invigorate you. It does work!by Karen Pheassant, owner of Ladies Workout Express on the Swinton Worsley border

With the cold winter causing havoc on the roads, here are some essential tips to protectyour vehicle from freezing temperatures and harsh weather conditions, and maximise your

Testimonial from a happy client:-“Rick Tsang did a fantastic job on bothmine and my wife's car. My wife's VWBeetle had a very bad score along thefront passenger side bumper and after acouple of hours of work from Rick, thebumper is brand new. You honestly wouldnot know that anything had happened. My own Mercedes was very badly stonechipped. Due to the car being metallicblack you can spot any blemishes on thepaint from a mile away. Standing backfrom the car now, you honestly can'tspot them. On a very close inspection I actually found it hard to locate wherethey had been. I am very particular aboutmy car and very fussy about the paint finish. I am absolutely delighted with theend result, far better than I expected andwould not hesitate in recommendingChipsAway Worsley.”

Prepare Your Car for Winter

Protect your car’s bodywork and get stone chipsand scratches repaired nowChipsAway Worsley have been repairing body work in this area overthe last six years. This is what Rick andhis team can do for your car....

BEFORE AFTER

Anti-freeze - check and top up if necessary. This helps control the engine temperature

plus help to protect it during extreme cold starts.

Lubricate the engine using a low-viscositysuch as 5w30. It speeds up start-up and helps

to reduce wear by flowing oil quickly to the engineat low temperatures. Warm up your car for a few seconds to ensure a proper flow of oil has been established and adequate lubrication before driving off.

Tyres - check the tyre pressure regularly inwinter. Proper pressure is vital to maintain

better traction. Or consider switching all tyres towinter ones, which are specifically designed to improve traction on snow-covered or icy roads.

Battery - get it tested, especially if over 2-3years old. A dead battery is one of the most

common causes for a no-start during winter. Makesure the battery terminals are tight and not corroded.

Wipers & washer fluid - check and replaceyour windscreen wipers if necessary to improve

visibility and help to avoid dangerous situations.Clean the windscreen from inside as well and usespecial winter washer fluid that won't freeze.

Body work scratches - winter is harsh onyour car's body: moisture, sand and road salt

damage the exterior paint and speed up corrosion.Scratches and stone chips will more likely be corroded after winter, so get any damages to yourcar's paint repaired or touched up before winter.Wash your car regularly.

Heating - make sure that your heater and defroster is working properly to ensure you

are comfortable and assist driver-visibility. Brakes and lights - check they are workingand well maintained, as there are many icy

mornings and dark nights ahead!

Secrets of Middlewood - Part I

The “Cold War”Defences in Worsley

In the aftermath of World War II, the euphoriaof victory over Nazi Germany quickly faded, when it became apparent that a new threatwas emerging in the shape of the Soviet Union.

The Blockade of Berlin, the food and suppliesAirlift to the beleaguered City which becamenecessary for its survival, as well as otherprovocative acts in Soviet-occupied EasternEurope, all demonstrated that Freedom wasnot on the Soviet agenda. The “Cold War” -which was to last almost 40 years, had begun.

Very soon after the general demobilisationof British forces after the War, defensivepreparations began for what it seemedmight be the next conflict. But these preparations were of necessity secret, sinceany open activity could be considered aggressive and an excuse for further escalation in the “Arms Race” by the Communist Bloc.

Despite the advent of the “atomic bombs”having been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, conventional war with the Sovietswas still considered to be a possibility.

That meant a probable repeat of bombingraids so a new anti aircraft gunnery networkneeded to be constructed to protect the nation. Thus, the Manchester Gun DefendedArea came into being and Middlewood waschosen as the site for an AAOR (Anti AircraftOperations Room), staffed by the RAF.

Built on the terrace of the demolished Worsley New Hall, the AAOR was completedin 1952 and formed part of a ring aroundthe city, to detect and then engage withguns sited elsewhere, any hostile aircraft.

“Room” was very much a misnomer, for theAAOR consisted of a huge concrete bunker, windowless and massive, partially built intothe hillside. Inside it had two levels, eachaccessed by canopied heavy doors to theoutside and a complex of rooms for a resident staff of both sexes.

The Gun Director, from his dais, presidedover Operations within his sector and hadthe ability to co-ordinate not only with otherAAOR’s in the MGDA Area, but also nationwide.Everything from Radio Communications,

De-contamination (presumably in the eventof a nuclear attack), Gun Direction, throughto the more mundane such as a Canteenand sleeping quarters were accommodatedwithin the “Room” of the AAOR.

The outside world of Worsley knew little ofthis. The only visible external signs were twoenigmatic towers which barely peeked abovethe ancient beeches of Middlewood. Theselattice structures, rather like a modern highvoltage pylon, were each topped by a horizontal lattice cross.

To those interested in WWII artefacts thesewould have been familiar, since they wereidentical to those which stood all along theEast Coast and detected incoming Germanbombers. Such was the condition of Worsley’s AAOR until 1958, when the marchof technology made the entire ManchesterGun Defended Area and its systems redundant,a mere six years after its completion! Thereason was that aircraft were no longer considered to be a threat. The name of thegame now was “ICBM’s “ (IntercontinentalBallistic Missiles), against which it was considered there was no defence - otherthan to possess some of your own. Hence, the “Nuclear Deterrent” was born.

So, after dismantling all its equipment andtowers, ownership of the Middlewood facility was transferred to the Royal Navy AirService who used it as a food storage areaattached to RNAS Riseley until 1961 when itwas bought by Salford City Council. TheCouncil used it as a Civil Defence installation,

with Lancashire County Council, with a responsibility for the area from Stretford toTurton, reporting to the Main Control at Preston.

In 1968, when the Civil Defence Corps wasdisbanded, the building was put into “Careand Maintenance” until 1974, when it wassold to Manchester County Fire Service. They, in turn, sold it to a local gun club foruse as an indoor range in the early ‘90’s. Finally, its ownership rests with a local property investment and development company.

Through all these changes the building hasremained intact. True, the interior has beenaltered a number of times to satisfy differentowners, but as late as 2002 it still held manyevocative memories; signage, documents, wall maps etc., of its Cold War role. Sadly, some vandals have defaced its grim greywalls with spray-painted graffiti, littered thearea with the debris of nocturnal revels andat some time gained access to the interiorto do the same there. But their destructiveefforts seem to barely scratch the surface ofa building which is quite awe-inspiring in itsmonolithic presence.

It is easily accessible if you fancy a walk(permitted on certain paths) through Middlewood. Simply take the road to theleft of the Garden Centre, past the ScoutHut, for approximately 300m. You cannotmiss the great black cube that confrontsyou amongst the trees.
