Choosing a Great Family HolidayWhether you are embarking on your first trip with your children, or looking for a new destination, here are some tips for booking the ideal family holiday.

Planning a great holiday cantake time and a lot of research, with the whole family’s needsto cater for. How do you keepthe kids entertained and happy

and relax and have a good time yourself? Here are some of the things you need toconsider when choosing your holiday.

KEEPING COSTS DOWNCosts soon mount up, especially when paying full fare for each child on the flight.Look for hotels that let children stay free intheir parents' rooms and provide free mealsfor children, or offer buffet-style breakfastsin the price of the room.

DURATIONAfter all the planning & preparation 7 nightswill fly by and you’ll be leaving just as youget settled in. 14 nights may be too long.

So consider 10 nights - most tour operatorsdo offer this.

THE FLIGHT & TRANSFERFlying can be stressful so assess the maximum flight duration your children canmanage and find a destination within thatrange. If embarking on a longer journey, travel at night when they can sleep through.Pre-book your seats together to avoid beingsplit up on the plane. It also means lessrushing to get to the airport and a morerelaxed start to your holiday.Transfer times - avoid a long journey fromthe airport to your resort after a tiring flight!

LOCATION!Choose hotels that are close to places youwant to explore, convenient for meals andamenities. Ideally, you want everything within walking distance. Also check theresort is suitable for pushchairs if you haveyoung babies or toddlers.

KEEP KIDS ENTERTAINED AND ALLOWSOME TIME TO YOURSELF.Select a hotel with baby sitting services, creche, kids clubs, kids pools and play areasfor the children. Make sure they have suit-able activities for kids of your age, plussome you can do together. Keeping thechildren happy is key to having a great holiday and it means you may get a chanceto relax too.

SELF CATERING VS HOTELSelf catering: flexibility to eat what you wantand when you want, but is more work. However, you will get more space with separate bedrooms, lounge and kitchen. Hotel: no need for cooking, but choose buffet style if you have fussy eaters. If you want the best of both worlds, you canfind apartment-style accommodation withcooking facilities and on-site restaurants.

Too Easy to Become a CoachBy David Screeton - Head Professional atWorsley Park, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club.

A long standing friend of mine is David Platt, former England Football Captain. Whilst playing golf one day we stumbled on the topicof conversation regarding the standard ofcoaching both in Football and Golf. With a largeamount of experience in our chosen sports, weagreed that the standard of coaching is poorat Junior level in this country. We came to theconclusion that it is too easy to achieve acoaching level allowing you to teach youngsters.David worries about the standard of youngfootballers coming through the academies, whereas I have noticed at first hand the problems caused by poor golf tuition.

The child in the holidays is sent to a golfingschool which gives parents the impression thatthey have reached a standard far in advance oftheir real ability. It can be largely disappointingfor both the child and parent to realise thatplaying on grass is completely different toplaying off an artificial mat at a driving range. The instant success of a flat elevated drivingrange tee can be misleading.

Parents led to believe they have a golfingprodigy on their hands and the PGA Professional,in many cases have to alter their illusions. Thiscan be very difficult for the highly-qualifiedprofessional to then rectify swing problemscaused by poor tuition suffered previously.

Coaches need to be coached. I am to believethat nobody fails the coaching courses atlower standards and it seems to me like amoney making scheme for governing bodies.

Reflection:-The European Tour has started and the promising weather throughout March seemsto have kicked started the season. My club,Marriott Worsley Park, is buzzing with anticipation of the oncoming season. Thecourse is on line to be better than ever thissummer with the recent weather predictions inthe media, and I trust everyone within theregion will have a fantastic golfing year!!

Spring into Summer

This year winter seems to have passedstraight into summer with spring onlymarked by the late appearance of hosts ofdaffodils. It does mean that we've all beengiven an early reminder to start on oursummer body preparation, so if you're readyto get started, here's an 8-week plan tofeeling energised and full of confidence. Each week of the plan introduces changesto both diet and exercise and is designed tobuild on the previous week.

WEEK 1l Start by really noticing what you are

eating. Ideally, keep a note each day, anddon't cheat! No need to change anything this week, just become more aware of what you are consuming.

l Aim to do 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (walking, jogging, cycling, swimming)on 3 days at a pace you are comfortable with.

WEEK 2l Replace any fried foods with grilled,

baked or steamed. l Limit cakes, biscuits and chocolate to 2

small portions a week. l Eat 3 meals a day and don't skip breakfast.l Repeat the exercise from week 1 but

increase the intensity so that you are breathing more heavily and sweating.

l Add 2 sets of resistance exercises usingresistance bands, dumbbells or your ownbodyweight on 2 days, ideally alternatingwith the cardiovascular work and including upper and lower body exercises.

Page 19: On Our Doorstep - May / June 2010

ON OUR DOORSTEP 19

WEEK 3l Add 2-3 small healthy snacks a day e.g.

fruit, small handful of nuts, low fat yoghurt. This will help keep your metabolism firedup and stop you over-eating at mealtimes.

l Reduce alcohol intake to 1-2 units per day.l Replace your normal dinner plate with

one no more than 9” diameter & split it:-25% lean protein (meat, fish, eggs, soya),25% starchy carbs (pasta, potato, rice) and50% vegetables.

l Add an extra session of cardiovascular exercise and an extra session of resistance exercise.

WEEK 4l Replace processed foods with natural and

drink 1 litre of water each day. l Increase your cardiovascular sessions to

30 minutes and add a third set of resistance exercises.

WEEK 5l Switch to wholemeal bread, pasta and rice.l Find ways to incorporate more exercise into

your day - take the stairs, get off the bus astop earlier, walk to the shops, park furtheraway - then do it every day.

WEEK 63 weeks to go! l Reduce alcohol consumption to 1-2 units

on just two nights a week. l Cut out all cakes, biscuits and chocolate.l Do 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise

on 5 days and your resistance workouts on4, but ensure you build in one full day's rest.

WEEK 7l Ensure you include some protein with each

main meal, including breakfast.l For 2 of your cardiovascular workouts, do a

20 minute interval training workout: walk/run/swim/cycle at your usual pace for 5 minutes to warm up then at a fast pacefor one minute, then slow to a gentle pace for one minute. Repeat this for 10 cycles and finish with a slow pace for 2 minutes to cool down.

WEEK 8l Reduce the amount of carbohydrate to 2

small servings a day (1 serving = 1 slice bread, 3 small new potatoes, 40g uncooked pasta/rice).

l Do 3 interval training sessions and 3 steady-pace cardiovascular sessions, plus 3resistance workouts.

Then pack your bags and fly off to your mostenergised holiday ever!

Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express inSwinton.

BODYWEIGHT RESISTANCE EXERCISESHere are 2 simple, but effective exercises you can do at home. Aim to do 10 repetitions of each, thenrest, and repeat.

Bent Knee Push-UpStart with hands & knees on a mat. Your hands should be shoulder-width apart and your head, neck, hips and legs should be in a straight line. Do not let your back arch & cave in. Maintain a slight bendin the elbows. Lower your upper body by bending your elbows outward, stopping before your chesttouches the floor. Contracting the chest muscles, slowly return to the starting position. Inhale whilelowering your body. Exhale while returning to the starting position. After mastering this exercise, youmay wish to try the full push-up.

SquatStand straight with feet hip distance apart. Hold onto a chair for balance if you need to. Inhale as youbend at the knees and hips until your thighs are parallel to the floor, keeping your feet flat on thefloor. Try to keep your knees directly above your toes. Contract your quadriceps (thigh muscle) andglutes (buttocks) and exhale while returning to the starting position. Make sure your head is up, yourback is straight and your chest lifted throughout the movement. Discontinue this exercise if you feelany discomfort in your knees or lower back.

Tracey Peake, a Worsley business mum, runsPeake Health, a health & wellness centre onChorley Road, Swinton. Over the last 4 yearsher business has gone from strength to strength.Tracey started her busines from home and isnow moving to larger premises and expandingher services to the community from a doublefronted shop on Moorside Road.We invited Tracey to share her story.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOURBACKGROUNDI’m a mumpreneur and sole carer of my sonJake, who is 13 years old. I trained as a pharmacist and have 26 years experience inretail pharmacy. I owned my own Pharmacy inLowton for 12 years.

WHAT IS PEAKE HEALTH - HOW DID ITSTART? I help people lose weight, gain energy andchange their lifestyle. Plus I help people startbusinesses like mine, working from home as aHerbalife Distributor (Herbalife is global nutrition, weight-loss and skin-care company).Running my own pharmacy was extremelydemanding and due to the workload, I decidedto sell it to devote more time to my son whowas then 5 yrs old. After that, I worked as alocum, which was easier but was neither inspiringnor creative enough. Having been a pharmacistsince 1984, I needed a new directon. In 2006, I set up from home as a Herbalife distributor, but working from home becameunsustainable so then moved to premises onChorley Road and set up the weight loss andnutrition centre, Peake Health.

HOW DOES RUNNING THE BUSINESS FITWITH YOUR FAMILY LIFE?The beauty of this business is that I can keepwork at work and make sure I achieve quality

time with my son. Plus I have the opportunity towin luxury prizes, like a Mediterranean cruise in2011, and take Jake with me.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOURBUSINESS?We are in the business of delivering results bethey weight loss, improving wellness and energy, sports performance and even peoples incomes. One of the greatest pleasures is watching peoples self esteem and confidence grow as aresult of losing weight or developing their ownHerbalife business with my support.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RECENT SUCCESSESI have just won the Herbalife Top Sales AwardQtr1 2010. I was presented with the Herbalifebranded Mini Cooper at the National HERBALIFEmeeting at the Lowry Theatre on 24th April forachieving the highest personal sales in UK &Ireland. This follows reaching the top 5% of distributors in the UK & Ireland last October.

Peake Health is moving to new premises due tothe huge demand for health and wellness products and my expanding team. We will havethe scope to incorporate related services tohelp the clients achieve their goals, with a largemeeting room to hold group meetings andtraining for new distributors. It is exciting timesas the health & wellness industry is growingrapidly and beating the recession, as people arelooking to stay younger, fitter and healthier.

CAN YOU GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOROTHER BUSINESS START-UPS Develop a positive attitude and a “no job toosmall” approach, keeping focused with yourgoals in writing whilst looking after yourselfwith great nutrition products like Herbalife togive you the energy and good health needed tosupport your business, yourself and your family.

Celebrating local successHave you seen Tracey zipping around in her newHerbalife Mini? - a great reward for achieving Top UKSalesperson in 2010 (Qtr1).

Ancient Worsley History

Murder Most Foul“Worsley Man” - an Iron Age sacrifice to the Gods

They came for him at dusk, in the bitterlycold winter of 120 AD and took him to thesacred grove of great trees on the red sandstone ridge where all their religiousrituals took place. He was one of their own,the Celtic Brigantes, who occupied what weknow today as Lancashire and Yorkshire, under the iron grip of Roman rule.

However, ancient customs die slowly andRoman law was far from the forests anddesolate fenlands of the area now known asWorsley. Tribal justice judged him for hisshameful crimes and in the place of thegods, passed the verdict of death. This wasno noble death such as hanging from a tree,or mercifully by the sword, but the “TripleKilling” reserved for those felons sacrificedto the greatest goddess of the Celts, MotherEarth.

The number three has always had magicalsignificance for Celtic people and was especially potent when applied to sacrifice, since it appeased the triple manifestationsof the earth goddess as the bringer of fertility, plentiful harvests and renewal. Shewas the guardian of the “Otherworld”,where they all would go to on their deaths.

Ritual dictated that he be fed a final meal ofporridge, made from the seeds of a widevariety of plants, to ensure he took thepromise of renewed growth with him to theafterlife. Then he was killed...Firstly, he was garrotted with the sinewstaken from a deer. Then his skull waspierced by an axe and, before hitting theground, his throat was cut and he wasdecapitated.

The climax of the ceremony was the bearingof his remains, in procession, to the edge ofthe great marsh now called Chat Moss, where he was hurled into its hellish poolsand tannic bogs. Such places were believedto be the gateway to the “Otherworld”.

There he would lie for almost 2,000 yearsuntil 1958 when his skull was discovered bya group of peat-cutters, working at WorsleyMoss in Astley. Preserved by the tannic acidof the peat, still with some hair and fleshintact, he seemed a recent death, possibly amurder. The workmen called the local constabulary to the scene, but the excitement did not last. Forensic investigation established that the skull wasvery old. A coroner delivered an “open ver-dict” at an inquest and the skull was lodgedat Manchester Medical School, in a cupboard, quietly forgotten.

It seems nobody thought to connect thefinding with a wave of similar discoveries inEurope, particularly Denmark, where aremarkably well-preserved body “TollundMan” had been found in identical circumstances. Over 100 “Bog Bodies” havenow been found, all preserved by a combination of bog chemistry and coldtemperature at the time of death.

Then in 1984, a complete body was found inCheshire. “Lindow Man” came to the surfaceof Lindow Moss and became a celebrity. Hewas very well preserved. Wearing only a foxfur bracelet he was complete with his hair, skin and features. He proved to be of thesame antiquity as Worsley Man and hadbeen executed in precisely the same way.

His discovery re-awakened interest inWorsley Man. In 2003, he was transferred toManchester Museum into the care ofarchaeologist Professor John Prag, who inturn introduced him to facial anthropologistCaroline Wilkinson. She had long specialisedin facial reconstruction based on theindividual characteristics of skulls, techniquesextensively used in aiding identification ofhuman remains from crime or disaster events.

Firstly, a CT scan was commissioned atChristies Hospital to establish the preciseform and deformities of the skull, boththrough its internment period and laterforensic work. It was then sent to UniversityCollege of London to be digitally correctedto its pre-death form. From that point,Wilkinson was able to remodel the skull andintroduce muscles and facial features. Smalldetails of the skull can indicate the presence,in life, of features such as earlobes - whichindeed he had!

After skin was added, the final touch was toapply the dark hair and blue eyes of thetypical Celt and Worsley Man lived again, albeit without a body…

Does he look familiar? Did he leave descendants? Perhaps the chap you passedthe other day in Boothstown…
