I am writing this out at the Darwin Show this time. What a great day it is.
It is a bit scary that we are in July already with most of our major Duties done and
dusted, where has all the time gone? Thank you for all you have done.
I was in Katherine last weekend doing the Show and it was great to meet and see
all members in Katherine. Thank you for your hospitality.
It was great to catch up with Gwyn this week when she came up to Darwin for a
visit.
Hopefully we will see you at the show.

St John in Katherine has just achieved the first milestone in
the building of our new ambulance centre today, with the
announcement of C & R Contractors as the building
contractors to commence works on the brand new St John
Ambulance centre located on Chardon Street. Chief
Minister Adam Giles and Member for Katherine Willem
Westra Van Holthe were joined by Mayor Faye Miller to
make the official announcement. This is a very exciting day
for St John with the new building proposed to be
completed by the end of the year.

Calling all St John youth, 16 to 26 years.
Did you know the “Boundless” leadership event is on the Gold Coast
this year in September?
What is Boundless 2016?
In 2015 the Australian Youth Advisory Network identified a need to
engage with young members of St John Ambulance Australia to gain their input into key projects within the
organisation. Boundless 2016 will see young people from across Australia collaborate to share their ideas
and to be consulted on key issues with the organisation. Members will be gathering both face to face &
virtually.
The Boundless 2016 program will have experts in their field come to present to the young people of St John
Ambulance along with opportunities for consultation on hot topics that are being discussed within senior
levels of the organisation. Boundless 2016 is a tool for young people of the organisation to be heard.
Boundless 2016 offers a fantastic opportunity to have representatives from the various youth programs
around Australia to attend and provide their State’s or Territory’s input into the consultation opportunities
that will shape our future via the National Youth Strategic Plan.
$$$ Can't afford to go??? Well let's look at that...
Funds have been set aside to assist youth to attend such events as Boundless 2016. This includes
transport, accommodation and conference fees.
Contact Belinda Ding at the National Office - [email protected] - to apply for funding.

To sue own appointee?
DARWIN, Mon. — The man who appointed Flying
Doctor Fenton to his present position will decide
whether he is to be prosecuted.
As Health Minister, Senator McKenna was
responsible for Dr. Fenton's appointment as a
temporary quarantine officer at Darwin.
As Acting Attorney-General, Senator McKenna will
decide whether legal action will be taken against Dr.
Fenton for flying an air ambulance from Darwin to
Katherine last Thursday without holding a flying
licence.
Dr Fenton said to-day that he applied for a licence
last Tuesday, and passed medical and flying tests. He
felt he had done everything possible to fulfill the
requirements of the law.
The acting officer in charge of civil aviation at
Darwin (Mr. L. A. Deleuil) said Dr. Fenton still had to
pass written tests.
Northern Standard, Friday 31 December 1948
FENTON FLIES AGAIN
Last week the Territory's first "Flying Doctor" took
the air again and as happened often in the past he got
himself into trouble with Civil Aviation authorities.
Arrangements had been made for Pilot Harry
Moss to have the medical services plane ready at the
aerodrome to take Dr. Clyde Fenton to Katherine.
When he arrived at the drome, Dr. Fenton told Moss
that he would fly the plane himself. Despite protests by
Civil Aviation officials who pointed out to him that he
had no license, the doctor taxied the plane out to the
strip.
As he was about to take off, the control tower
fired a red Verey light across the runway. Apparently
thinking there might be a plane about to land, Dr.
Fenton taxied back to the tower where he was again
told that he could not fly the plane. He
immediately proved that he could by taking it down to
Katherine and back.

In the meantime all kinds of fireworks had gone
off in the Department of Civil Aviation and at the
Hospital, and the wires had kept buzzing.
OFFICIAL COMMENT
Mr. L. Deleuil, acting as District Superintendent of
Civil Aviation in the absence of Mr. P. Anderson, said
during the week that he had discussed the matter with
the Crown Law authorities here.
Crown Law office officials say they cannot take
any action until the approval of the Director-General of
Civil Aviation is obtained. They understood that D.C.A.
has referred the matter to its head office.
Dr. Murray told the Standard that his Department
had not authorised Dr. Fenton to fly without the full
approval of Civil Aviation. No action would be taken
against Dr. Fenton by the Department of Health, at
least at this case.
FIRST FLYING DOCTOR
Dr. Fenton is the man who years ago was
responsible for the introduction of the "Flying Doctor"
service in the Territory. The first plane he flew on his
work as an officer of the Health Department was
bought with his own money. He was frequently in
trouble both with his own department and D.CA.
because of his disrespect for red tape and officialdom
generally.
During the war he flew as senior officer of a
Communications flight stationed at Batchelor. On his
return here a couple of weeks aero, he told a Standard
representative that he had not flown since then. It is
understood that he had applied for a license before
last week's episode and that he had already passed the
medical examination. He had not, however, completed
the tests of Air Navigation Regulations.
Thanks to Leanne Gracie for posting in our SJANT History Facebook group these photos of Sanderson Combined Cadet
Division in the mid-1980s:

The St John Ambulance Historical Society of
Australia needs new younger members in the
Northern Territory.
All of our active Territory members are now
septuagenarians who ain’t gunna be here forever,
which is why we need to look for our replacements.
Those who have followed the historical articles
and photos in Vollie News and in our SJANT History
Facebook group will have seen that we have a very
interesting history, built around the people who
made the St John we know and enjoy today.
The book Awkward Hours, Awkward Jobs is
quite large and detailed, but it doesn’t tell the whole
story. Dawn Bat has produced a book about our
Commissioners and now we need somebody to write
about our Board members. They are volunteers too,
don’t forget.
Or maybe you could be the author of another
historical work that goes beyond Awkward Hours,
Awkward Jobs to include the paid Ambulance
Service, Training Branch and Community Care. I liked
to think that I would do all that, but I’m a realist in
my mid-70s and flat out producing Vollie News and
working on our historical archives.
Application forms are at the back of this
newsletter.
Fame awaits you …
