2016 Soaring Eagle Award Recipients
L . B . Eckelkamp, Jr ., and his wife, Bonnie, have built their lives, relationship, careers, and family on a strong foundation of faith, honesty, and hard work . Through the values instilled upon each of them by their parents, parish, and community, they work together as a team timelessly and selflessly supporting one another .
L . B . and Bonnie were both born in Washington, Mo ., and later met at St . Francis Borgia High School . Having enjoyed Scouting in their childhoods, they prioritized the importance and significance of Scouting in their own children, Louis B . “Buzz” Eckelkamp III and Jeanna Eckelkamp (now Sinnott) . Currently, their seven grandchildren are all involved in Scouting — having earned the Boy Scout Eagle rank or Girl Scout Silver Award, or working towards them .
Bonnie’s journey with Scouting started in second grade, when she became the first Brownie in St . Francis Borgia Grade School by joining the public school Brownie troop . She stayed with the troop through eighth grade . Bonnie was Buzz’s Cub Scout den mother and Jeanna’s Brownie and Girl Scout leader .
L . B . was introduced to Scouting by his father, Louis, and started as a Cub Scout in first grade with Gray Summit Cub Pack 443 . L . B . has received all of Scouting’s top volunteer honors — the Silver Beaver from the council level, the Silver Antelope from the regional level, and the Silver Buffalo from the national level . Today, L . B . is a National board member and past chair of the Community Alliances Committee with Boy Scouts of America . Additionally, he is an executive board member, executive committee member, and former president and chairman of the board with the Greater St . Louis Area Council . He still regrets not having attained the rank of Eagle Scout .
L . B . and Bonnie’s commitment to service does not just start and end with Scouting . Chairman of the board and CEO of the Bank of Washington, L . B . currently serves on the boards of St . Louis University, YMCA of Greater St . Louis, St . Louis Regional Chamber of Commerce, Regional Business Council of which he is past chairman, and the Greater St . Louis Community Foundation . He is trustee emeritus of the Missouri Botanical Garden . He is a member of the Washington Elks Club and Washington Rotary Club and is a Fourth-Degree Knight of Columbus . He is a Knight Grand Cross of the Holy Sepulchre, a Knight of Malta, and currently a member of the World Presidents Organization and Chief Executives Organization .
Bonnie has been involved as a past board member of the Annual Catholic Appeal in the Archdiocese of St . Louis, past chapter president and current member of P .E .O . Sisterhood, Chapter CD, Washington, Mo ., charter member of Legatus,
St . Louis Chapter, member of Equestrian Order of the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Knights and Dames of Malta, Young Presidents Organization and 49’ers, St . Louis Chapter, Papal Foundation, Stewards of St . Peter, Washington Federation Republican Women, Washington Elks Ladies Auxiliary, and Society of Josephines . She is also current co-chair of Franklin County Area United Way, Special Gifts Initiative, governing board member of Mercy Hospital, Washington, Mo ., board member of East Central College Foundation, emeritus trustee Fontbonne University . She has received the Missouri Community College Association Award .
Together Bonnie and L . B . have been awarded the Spirit of Mercy Award from Mercy Hospital, Silver Palm from Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre, Franklin County Community Involvement Association award, Washingtonian Award, and National Philanthropic Organization Award for Outstanding Fundraising Volunteers .
When asked about the legacy that both L . B . and Bonnie would like to leave behind for their children and grandchildren, they simply stated: “Know yourself, be yourself and give yourself . If you truly care about people, the rest will fall into place .”
With that being said, we are proud to honor them both here tonight . They have sincerely defined what it means to be committed to the betterment of our communities and to selflessly give of both time and talent, as well as how to live as an example of caring about others with honesty and respect .

Eagle Scouts, their parents, and Order of the Arrow members have the unique opportunity to proudly display their Scouting accomplishments.
The official Eagle Scout or Order of the Arrow license plate can be obtained
for Missouri-registered vehicles or Eagle Scout licence plate for Illinois-
registered vehicles.
Fill out the Emblem Use Authorization form (linked below)
and mail it to the council office along with a $25 check. The
Greater St. Louis Area Council will process the form and
return your application for personalized plates. Take this
approved form to your local license office for processing.
Show your accomplishments and your Scouting Spirit everywhere you drive!
