Emotion Smoke:Created by using a few different images of smoke and layering them. Changing the colour using colour overlay but using the blending mode light. The opacity has also been turned down which has improved it from the last development on the other slide.

The black and white help to set focus on the smoke. It also implies the emptiness we feel without emotions.

The position the model is in is very fitting. She is like a discarded doll that has been left by a wall.

The face in the smoke turned out perfectly. It is exactly how I wanted it to look.

At first it didn’t work out as well as I hoped, the smoke on Photoshop was too harsh. I tried to lower the opacity and fullness but the edges were still too harsh. I wanted them to fade out. I tried to blur and feather it out but one of the settings must have been wrong because it wasn’t working how I wanted it too. It would lose its colour, which I didn’t want to happen. The radial blur was the best one to use as it didn’t blur the whole image of the smoke. However, against the main image things didn’t look so bad. Choosing the right image to layer it with though was difficult. The out of focus images made the smoke stand out too much, even though the smoke is meant to be the main part the original image needs to hold its own ground too. I changed the main image black and white and added a filter, fresco, to add depth and edge. The image was out of focus originally but the filter made it crisp up a bit.

I think the smoke against the image is a nice contrast. I had to swap the smoke round horizontally to cover up some of her leg. Because of the angle of the shot her leg takes up most of the frame, and with it being such a dark colour it stands out a lot. The angle of the photo could have been better but the plain space on the left is a good place for the smoke to go. I like the fact that she is looking away from the whole image, it makes it seem that she is not expecting anything, and we don’t expect emotions to hit us so hard. The face in the smoke is something I am very proud of. I tried to incorporate a mask, a sourced image of a face that showed the emotion angry well. However it was hard to achieve this and I didn’t like how it looked, so I decided to make the face myself by clearing circles for the eyes and mouth and adding some more white smoke to contour and highlight the features.

Despite the fuss with the smoke at the beginning I am very pleased with how it turned out. Changing the blending mode on the colour overlays and trying to change the levels gave the smoke the right depth and made it look more realistic. Since the image is layered, multi exposure, it was hard to make them look like one.

The image is very effective due to the out of focus effect while taking the image.

The smoke was done with water colours. I think it has faded out well and the outline of the smoke is just right to make it stand apart from the rest of the image. The colour was created by itself, I wanted it to be black but the water reacting with the ink turned it greenish. However, the colour still works well.

The printer was running out of ink so there are stripes against the image. This ruins the overall look but it is only noticeable in the dark areas. This makes it look like an effect that was meant to be there.

My images on Photoshop didn’t work out as well as I hoped so I decided to use watercolours. Painting on the images was a good idea as this is another experimental technique. Part of the reason I choose this technique was because we had been working with computers all year and I wanted to break away from that. Using multi media looks more creative and allows you to show emotions more, which is what I was trying to portray. It took a few tries until I found the right style I wanted to use. The biggest problem was the water making the paper soggy and the card peel. It added texture but it was a texture I didn’t want. I had to make sure that the ratio of water to paint was 1:2. However using more water achieved the smoke effect I wanted. Because I painted on them straight after it was printed the water reacted with the ink creating an effect that made the smoke have a solid outline. The colours I used was mostly red as I found this one the easiest to work with. It stood out against the black ink of the main image yet was pale enough to be smoke. I tried many times to make it look like she was inhaling the smoke but because the water and ink was reacting with each other and leak it made the smoke go too big and not fit her nostril anymore.

I tried to add a face to the smoke, as that was part of the theme as stated in the proposal, but I wasn’t sure on how to achieve it. I tried to add more paint, to darken the areas where I wanted the features to be. I also tried to scratch the eyes in but the paper/card was too delicate to handle it with all the water on it. I didn’t want wholes in my work but during my third attempt I accidently created a face by missing out parts of the paint. I prefer the face on the third attempt but the other smoke on that image ruins the picture. It took a while to get the hang of the paints and the water and the way they reacted with the ink of the printed image. The printer was also running out of ink so the coloured images were hollowed out with not much detail which helped with the aspect that the model is a hollow puppet. The stripes where the ink is running out ruins the image and doesn’t fit in with the aspect of the theme.

The image is out of focus and I have used mutlimedia to add the emotion smoke. I feel like the images are empty enough to portray the puppet aspect. The out of focus effect helps with displaying how dominating emotions are.

This image was an accident . I was trying to make the smoke come out of her nose but there was too much water on the page and the brush bristles were too hard so the paper just peeled off. I liked the effect it started to create. It looked like the film had been damaged during development. Because it was an accident there is no development for the image. The development would be the other tries of using the paint. I like this piece being part of the collection because it is the same image as the first piece but it has been edited differently. It shows the different ways emotions can be shown.

This image has drifted from my proposal but it just fit in with the emotion theme I wanted. It portrays that emotion takes over the whole face, covering it up and making you see what it wants you to see. It also shows that you don’t have to see someone's face to see what emotion they are feeling, it shows in their body too.

Again the printer was running out of ink that the print turned out a bit hollow. The effect looks like a filter on Photoshop though. The light behind her head is not actually there, it’s the crinkles of the paper because of the water. However I think it works with the image, it brings a bit of light and depth to the overall image.

The image is an out of focus and I have used multi media to produce the rip over the top
