Challenges for Maori specialists working in a hospital setting

• Often the only Maori person working on the ward

• Breaches to tapu/noa

• Time constraints

• Environmental constraints • Care constrained to hospital setting – lack

of relationship to community services

• Balancing science with cultural beliefs

The way forward…• Increase the numbers of Maori Specialists

• Provide culturally safe and sensitive training programs

• Change the way we work – more time on ward rounds and in clinics

• Cultural competence and safety for all hospital staff

• Create genuine relationships with primary care and community services

• Advocate for equity in all forms i.e Te Reo

• Perform research into achieving equity in all specialties

The Maori Health Action Plan RACS

• Acknowledgement of Maori health inequities and advocacy for change

• A surgical workforce that values cultural diversity and cultural competence and is representative of Maori within Aotearoa.

• Evidence based research on achieving equitable surgical outcomes for Maori.

• Provision of treatment and healthcare options to deliver the best outcomes for Maori.

• Incorporation of Te Ao Maori within the College’s activities, image and culture.
